The mission of Whiteland Community High School is to prepare responsible citizens who collaborate, think
critically, and utilize effective communication to solve problems in a dynamic society.
WCHS Community,
What an interesting second semester this has been! With all the disruptions and changes
to the daily schedule as the result of the winter weather, we can say that the 2013-14 school year
has been a unique one. As we look ahead to the remainder of the semester, there are some important issues and dates that I want to remind you of.
There are a number of standardized tests that are rapidly approaching as we move into the
end of this semester. Students in English 10, Algebra 1 or Biology will be taking the required End
of Course Assessments in the first week of May. In addition, students who are in AP classes will be
taking their AP exams in the first two weeks of May as well. Those exams are critical not only to
the student for their future plans such as graduation and college admission but to the greater
school community as a whole. With the changes to our daily schedule to make up missed days,
teachers have been working hard behind the scenes to adjust curriculum to ensure that students
are prepared for these tests. The letter grade we receive from the Department of Education is directly tied to the results of these tests. One of our goals each year is to be an “A” school. In order
to accomplish this goal, we need students to perform well on these tests. As we approach these testing windows, please help us to encourage students to remain focused and to do their best on these
measures.

With only two months left in this school year, our seniors are winding down their high
school experience. I hope that experience has been positive for those students and that our seniors
finish strong. There are still some important events coming up for our seniors and here are the

This letter is to inform you of the immunization requirements for your senior year. By the first day of school of
the 2014-2015 school year you will be required to have a second MCV4/ Menactra shot. This is a new requirement by the Indiana Department of Education. The only exception to this requirement would be if you had the

Spotlight on Students….

WCHS Jazz Band One was named by the Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City as one of the top 15 jazz bands in the country
and has been invited to play/compete/participate in NYC this May as part of the National Essentially Ellington Program through the
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra!!! We even get to play in front of (and hopefully with) Wynton Marsalis!! This is a HUGE honor. The
only other Indiana high school to ever make the finals in NYC was Southport HS in 1999. We are honored to represent our community
and state! Students involved with Jazz Band One are: Evan Ward, Megan Beetler, Eric Davis, Caitlin Seitz, Ben Slightom, Maddie Miller,
Chuck Meyers, Abby Peavey, Allan Fowler, Alex Selph, Rebecca Meek, Zack Hackney, Justin Negri, Aaron Sinclair, Savannah Jackson,
and Tyler Pitzer.
Taylor Brinkman will be representing WCHS this year at Hoosier Girls State. Hunter Pendygraft & Landry Long will be representing WCHS
at Hoosier Boys State. The alternate is Anthony Simpson.

2011 graduate, Farin Hickman, officially qualified for the Division II indoor track and field nationals this week. On Friday, March 14th she competed in the 20 lb. weight throw, which she is currently ranked 16th in the country. Farin is in her junior year at the University of Indianapolis and
was also named the GLVC conference field event athlete of the year last May!

Shades of Blue and Expressions performed at the ISSMA Jazz/Show Choir Event held at WCHS and gave great performances. Shades of
Blue earned a Gold Division rating, and Expressions earned a Silver Division rating. Congratulations on a job well done!

Rhythm Masters competed at their last competition of the season on Saturday at South Dearborn. For the 3rd contest in a row, Rhythm Masters earned Best Vocals, Best Choreography, and Grand Champions in the small mixed division! In addition, they earned Best Tech Crew and
Ivy Bott again earned Best Female Solo Within a Show! It has been an amazing season so congratulations to all of the Rhythm Masters singers,
band, and tech crew!

Thank you to Brakayla Hillis for organizing a bowling party for Essential Skills/Peer students. There were a lot of “high fives” going around.
This event was her service project for Peer Helpers. We are planning our annual 4th Grade Mixer at CPI and our "newest" project will occur May
17th at Christina House as the Peers are planning a "senior" Prom for the residents. Every 3rd year Peer has to plan a "service" project and they
have come up with some great ones this year.

This year's musical is… On The Town.
On The Town is a high energy musical based on famed choreographer Jerome Robbins work. It is the story of three young sailors on leave for 24
hours in New York City. They only have one day to each meet their different goals: to see the city, to find love, to have fun; all these goals are met in
some jumbled way as the city make a high energy day to remember--even if those memories end in handcuffs! With such memorable songs as
"Come Up to My Place" and "New York, New York", On The Town is a musical that will leave you singing and dancing all the way home!

News from the Art Department
The art department has been busy this year! Here are a few updates.
-We were excited to welcome Brian VanderVeen to our department in the
fall, and continue to be impressed by his passion for art and education. Brian was previously employed as an art teacher at Clark Pleasant Middle
School and has now joined our WCHS family. Currently he is teaching Intro
to 2D Art, Digital Design and Photography.
-We are offering many new courses this year and encourage students to look
into these classes as they create their schedules for the 2014-2015 school
year. Students seeking multiple credits from one course can take Antiquity
and Design (ANDE), which engages students in art history, digital design
and world history in a project based environment. We have also added more
advanced levels for several courses, including Sculpture 2, Painting 3 and
Advanced 2D Art. Please see an art teacher or guidance counselor if you
would like more information about these offerings.
-The National Art Honor Society is once again undertaking a project called
“Painting Lemonade”. Students are in the process of creating artwork for
children in an extensive slum community in La Limonada, Guatemala.
Through this project we hope to raise global awareness and perform an act
of kindness for children who do not often receive gifts. This spring, each
child at one of the schools in La Limonada will receive a portrait of their
face, created by a WCHS artist. National Art Honor Society students have
also been participating in fundraising projects this year that will provide
money for the same community in Guatemala.
-Soon we will be preparing for our spring art shows! We invite you to visit
our school-wide art exhibit in the Media Center during the week of May 5-9,
as well as our display of senior student portfolios in the art hallway from
May 14-16.
Thanks for your support of the arts at WCHS! If you have questions, please
contact Lavana Tichenor, Vicki Pope, Emily Litsey, or Brian VanderVeen.

“Define Yourselves”
To ALL parents of WCHS students:
Please hold your student(s) accountable for any
overdue library materials.
We DO NOT charge library fees. Therefore, I
am asking for your help. We have students who have
overdue materials and other students would like to
read them. Help us by holding your student accountable for library materials that are overdue. Also, if you
happen to locate a book that has our barcode on it that
has WCHS Library over the top, please send it back to
the school, no questions asked.

Get in the BEAT, with Warrior Beat Radio/TV!
The Radio/TV Program has published an official Warrior TV Website:
http://warriortv.weebly.com/ .
If the student has lost the item, the library
will accept a replacement (exact book, same author)
since we DO NOT receive the funds back into the library accounts to re-purchase. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call me at 535-7562 ext.
3142. Thank you for your help and support!
This will serve as a portal to not only our current productions but also
archived Warrior TV material, a program blog, and further progressive opportunities to promote our students' work to the community
through a digital platform.

The Safe School Helpline has been an effective tool in helping to create a safer school environment by utilizing a communication link between your
school, students and parents.
*Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens.
The Safe School Helpline is now providing an additional service allowing students to talk directly to a trained clinician at any hour of the day or night.
These professionals, with this nationally certified service, will be there to help when problems in a student’s life become too great to handle alone.
If you have any questions, please call 1-800-325-4381.
