JOB DESCRIPTIONS: College of Nursing Administration and Faculty Leaders
A. Dean, College of Nursing
The Dean of each College within the university shall be appointed by the President with the approval of
the Chancellor and the Board of Regents and shall hold office at the pleasure of the President. The
recommendation of the President relating to each appointment shall be made after consultation with a
representative committee of faculty that involves members of the academic unit1 involved.
Powers
The Dean shall be the chief executive officer of the College and shall have the following powers and
duties to:
Coordinate the academic programs and instructional activities of the academic unit and to
supervise its research and service programs.
Present to the Academic Council those actions of the faculty that require approval of the
Academic Council as specified elsewhere in these Statutes.
Recommend to the President the appointment, reappointment, promotion, dismissal and nonrenewal of members of the faculty and its administrative staff. Prior to action on recommendations
regarding department heads, the Dean shall consult with all full-time members of the faculty of the
department concerned. In recommending appointments to faculty positions within a department,
the Dean shall act on the recommendation of the department head. In conformity with institutional
policy and the Policies of the Board of Regents, the Dean may recommend the dismissal of any
member of the faculty.
Make recommendations to the Senior Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Planning regarding
persons for appointment to classified positions and shall oversee, control, and direct the work of
employees of the academic unit.
Prepare annually a budget of the academic unit after consultation with the members of the faculty
and appropriate administrative assistants. Where departments exist, the Dean shall ask each
department head to recommend a departmental budget.
Be custodian of the buildings and other university property occupied or used by the academic unit
and be responsible for the proper use thereof subject to the general authority of the President.
Serve as the medium of communication for all official business of the academic unit with other
university authorities, the students, and the public.
Submit to the President a report covering important phases of the work of the academic unit at the
close of each academic year.
In addition, the Dean of each College shall:
Oversee the academic activity of the students of the College. The Dean shall be responsible for
the administration of regulations affecting student academic performance. In accordance with the
regulations of the university and consistent with requirements of due process, it is the
responsibility of the Dean of each College to reprove or dismiss students for disciplinary or
academic reasons.
Certify to the compliance by individual students with the requirements for graduation on the basis
of the records and reports of the Registrar's Office.
Be responsible; jointly with the appropriate administrative officer of instructional, research and
public service units of the institution; for programs operated for or by the College.

B. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs has overall responsibility for coordinating, implementing, and
evaluating all undergraduate and graduate programs of the College of Nursing, and interfaces with the
research, community and practice divisions to advance the mission of the College. The Associate
Dean delegates appropriate responsibilities associated with academic programs to the Program
Directors and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. In collaboration with the Department chairs, the
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is responsible for the assessment and evaluation of the
performance of all academic units. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean, and acts on the behalf of
the Dean in his/her absence.
Responsibilities and Functions
In collaboration with CON senior leadership, develops the strategic plan for the College of Nursing’s
academic programs, aligning the plan with the strategic mission of the Georgia Health Sciences
University.
Provides the leadership and vision for the implementation of all academic programs, utilizing
national educational trends in nursing.
Provides leadership for the development, assessment and improvement of policies and procedures
as they relate to the College of Nursing’s academic programs.
Collaborates with Department Chairs and faculty in the evaluation and refinement of each academic
program.
Advises the Chairs on the development of faculty as it relates to the academic mission.
Serves as the College of Nursing’s representative or designates a representative to other entities
that involve the university’s educational agenda.
Oversees the budget for the Office of Academic and Student Affairs.
Provides leadership to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in matters pertaining to the
advisement of students in their progression through the program
Maintains own program of scholarship, actively pursuing opportunities for external funding and
mentoring other faculty in these efforts.
Advises the Dean on all issues related to the various academic programs.
Represents the College of Nursing on campus committees relevant to area of supervision as
needed.
Collaborates, as a leader and member of the Senior Administrative Team, to support the mission of
the CON, the GHSU campus and the University System of Georgia.

C. Associate Dean for Research
The Associate Dean for Research works collaboratively with the College of Nursing Senior Administration
to provide executive leadership for the College of Nursing research agenda, leading faculty in innovative
and new research directions which attract external support.
Responsibilities and Functions
Develops, updates, assesses and refines the overall College of Nursing research strategic plan in
support of the mission and strategic plan of the Georgia Health Sciences University.
Serves as the College of Nursing liaison to other GHSU and community entities that involve the
University’s research agenda (i.e. serves on research-oriented university committees).
Is responsible for the budget of the Center for Nursing Research (CNR).
Has direct line authority over staff within the CNR including the Director of the CNR and is
administratively responsible for the Administrative Specialists in the CNR.
Serves as director of the PhD program.

Represents the College of Nursing to external research funding agencies.
Promotes cooperative and collaborative research arrangements with other GHSU colleges,
clinical agencies, universities, and private industry.
Keeps abreast with and disseminates information regarding funding opportunities.
Keeps faculty informed on the national trends in research funding.
Develops, maintains, assesses and refines policies and procedures related to the College of
Nursing’s research grant preparation.
Serves as a research mentor to faculty and doctoral students.
Coordinates research interest groups.
Facilitates tenured and tenure track faculty’s programs of research through developing research
critical pathways which can be used by their respective chairperson for constructing their
annual evaluation.
Maintains own program of funded research.
Advises the Dean and members of the Senior Administration on matters related to research
within the College.
Advises Department Chairs and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs regarding research
time commitments for specific faculty.
Keeps the General Faculty of the College of Nursing informed on grant applications that have
been submitted, the accomplishments of faculty with grants, and an overall analysis of the
College of Nursing’s total grants portfolio.
Assures the timely availability of accurate data related to the CON research activities.
Represents the College on campus committees relevant to area of supervision as needed.
Collaborates, as a leader and member of the Senior Administrative Team, to support the
missions of the CON, GHSU and the University System of Georgia.

D. Associate Dean for Strategic Management
In collaboration with the Dean, provides leadership and management of the College of Nursing (CON)
operations; strategic assessment, planning and resource allocation for the academic enterprise; design
and execution of faculty support systems; and implementation of continuous quality improvement
processes. The position reports directly to the Dean.
Responsibilities and Functions
Oversees the business functions of the College of Nursing.
Provides direct supervision for the Business Office staff.
Develops infrastructure to support faculty research, teaching, and practice.
Manages fiscal operations throughout the CON.
Works with CON administrators to ensure sufficient allocation and responsible use of College
resources.
Initiates and lead the annual budgeting process and advise the Dean on related matters.
Creates an activity based costing and management culture.
Designs systems to support entrepreneurial development and business practices.
Directs staffing decisions and allocate training resources.
Formulates strategies to market CON academic nursing products.

E. Associate Dean for Academic Nursing Practice
In collaboration with the Dean, the Associate Dean for Academic Nursing Practice provides executive
leadership for the Nursing Faculty Practice Group of the GHSU College of Nursing.. The position
reports directly to the Dean of the College of Nursing.
Responsibilities and Functions
Manages the overall operations of the NFPG and academic nursing practice enterprise.
Serves as the College of Nursing liaison to other GHSU entities engaged in practice and related
activities.
Is responsible for the budget of the Nursing Faculty Practice Group.
Has direct line authority over the NFPG executive team, including the Assistant Dean for Practice,
the Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships, Practice and Compliance Manager and their
NFPG administrative support staff.
Represents the College of Nursing to external agencies and potential partners for faculty practice.
Promotes cooperative and collaborative practice arrangements with other GHSU schools, clinical
agencies, universities, and private industry.
Works with NFPG faculty and staff to apprise CON of faculty opportunities.
Develops, maintains, assesses and refines policies and procedures related to the NFPG and its
operation.
Serves as a practice and clinical research mentor to faculty.
Maintains own practice involvement and/or own program of clinical research.
Advises the Dean and members of the Senior Leadership on matters related to practice within the
College.
Collaborates with the CON Business Office to ensure proper management of the NFPG and its

F. Associate Dean for Simulated Learning Innovations
In collaboration with the Dean, provides leadership and management of the College of Nursing (CON)
simulation and learning technologies.
Responsibilities and Functions
Assumes leadership in managing learning technologies for the College of Nursing and campus, and
provides oversight in the design, development, and implementation of all related initiatives.
Oversees the daily operations of the Interdisciplinary Simulation Center, including implementation of
policies and procedures, budget management, and acquisition of supplies.
In collaboration with program directors and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, designs,
develops, implements, and evaluates new and existing courses to ensure integration of learning
technologies throughout the curriculum.
In collaboration with the CON Business Office, manages the finances of the Simulation Center,
including the annual budget preparation, monitoring revenue/expenditures, managing funding
sources to ensure that contracts are maintained and revenue sources are maximized.

Supervises faculty and staff assigned to the Simulation Center.
Identifies and submits funding opportunities for simulation education and patient safety research.
Acts as lead educator (instructor) in the simulation center – designing simulation experiences,
scheduling sessions, and teaching clinical skills and critical thinking using simulation technology.
Solicits and collects instructor and student feedback following simulation experiences to analyze the
impact of simulation on the learning process.
Identifies opportunities for improvement, innovation, implementation and integration of patient
simulation technology into existing healthcare curricula and disseminates this information to the
campus.
Serves as simulation mentor and educator to clinicians, staff and leadership team.
Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional
affiliations, and actively seeks opportunities to publish and to present at various conferences.
Promotes the use of simulation and other advanced learning technologies throughout the campus
and USG system, and participates in public relations events such as deemed necessary.

G. Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs provides input on clinical activities and issues in the College of
Nursing. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Nursing and is filled by the Vice President
for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer of GHSUHI.
Responsibilities and Functions
Provides information on clinical issues as they relate to the Georgia Health Sciences University
Health, Inc.
Assists with developing clinical programs for student educational experiences.
Advises the College on clinical issues relevant for student experiences and faculty practice.
Serves as a liaison between the College and GHSUHI.
Represents GHSUHI division of nursing at College functions
Provides College of Nursing administration and faculty with policies and procedures of GHSUHI.
Interprets College and University policies and procedures to GHSUHI.

H. Department Chair (3)
The Department Chairperson shall be appointed by the President with the approval of the Board of
Regents pursuant to the Policies of the Board of Regents.2 The Chairman shall hold office at the
pleasure of the President and normally shall be appointed upon the recommendation of the Dean of a
College made after the Dean’s consultation with the members of the department and other members of
the College’s faculty. The Chairman serves as chief executive officer of the Department, but is entitled
to full faculty privileges including eligibility to vote in all elections and serve as an elected representative
to the Academic Council.
Responsibilities and Functions
Assumes responsibility for the general direction of the activity of the department; for the formation,
in consultation with the faculty, of departmental policies; and for the execution of departmental,
school and university policies insofar as they affect the work of the department.

Represents the department in all official communications with the President, the Vice Presidents,
the Deans, and other officers of the university, and also in all departmental communications with
students.
Assumes responsibility for the quality of the instruction, research and service programs conducted
in the department.
Oversees the assignment of teaching and other duties within the department and maintain insofar
as possible an equitable and mutually agreeable distribution of assignments.
Participates in the recommendation of appointments, reappointments and promotions of members
of the faculty after consultation with the tenured and other members of senior rank of service in the
department. These shall be consistent with the tenure policy. The Chairman shall forward to the
Dean, in writing, the collective opinions of the departmental faculty consulted along with any written
recommendations by the Chairman concerning any such faculty changes. The record of every
faculty member shall be reviewed annually for promotion and tenure. This evaluation will be
discussed with the faculty member.
Makes recommendation to the Dean for the dismissal or non-renewal of a member of the faculty in
accordance with policies as stated in these Statutes.
Oversees, in consultation with the senior administration and business office staff, matters
concerning the annual budget. After final approval, the budget shall be reviewed with the
departmental faculty.
Is responsible for the expenditure of departmental funds and the care and use of departmental
property.
Presents an annual report to the Dean of the school on the teaching research, and service work of
the department.

I. Assistant Dean for Student Affairs
The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs has responsibility for all student related activities in the College
of Nursing. The Assistant Dean supervises the Student Affairs staff members and reports to the
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Responsibilities and Functions
Facilitates the recruitment of students into the academic programs in conjunction with the Office of
the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Services.
Oversees the production of recruitment literature and related marketing publications associated with
academic programs.
Serves as the College of Nursing representative to other university entities associated with the
Office of the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Services.
Facilitates the enrollment, progression, and graduation of students in the College of
Nursing/College of Graduate Studies.
Directs and supervises the staff associated with Student Affairs.
Serves as student advocate in the College of Nursing.
Manages student crisis issues and refer students to appropriate resources.
Collaborates with academic program directors concerning enrollment, progression and graduation

K. Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships
The Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships provides leadership for the GHSU College of Nursing
to develop and nurture community partnerships to further its missions of teaching, research and
practice. The position reports directly to the Dean.
Responsibilities and Functions
Collaborates with the Dean to identify community engagement opportunities and to facilitate CON
participation.
Serves as CON liaison to select community and professional organizations and governmental
agencies.
Identifies and advocates for infrastructure and operational needs to support the CON community
initiatives.
Facilitates cooperation and collaboration in community health initiatives with other GHSU schools,
clinical agencies, universities, private industry, and the Georgia Area Health Education Centers.
Keeps abreast with and disseminates information regarding partnership opportunities at the local,
state and national levels.

and private entities, and faculty recruitment.
Maintains accurate records of partnership activities and makes regular reports to the administration

increase likeness to community and state demographics.
Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Nursing Practice to facilitate practice

Provides leadership regarding the CON participation in the Greater Augusta Healthcare Network.
Manages staff assigned to specific initiatives related to practice and community outreach.

In collaboration with the Associate Dean for ANP and NFPG staff, identifies opportunities to provide
contracted services to the campus and community.
Assists in obtaining funding and support for academic nursing practice initiatives within the CON
and community.
Collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships, to coordinate practice and
outreach efforts.

M. Assistant Dean for the College of Nursing at Athens
In collaboration with Georgia Health Sciences University’s (GHSU) College of Nursing (CON) Senior
Administration, the Assistant Dean for the College of Nursing at Athens (CONAT) provides

administrative leadership for the Athens satellite campus. The position is a 0.5 FTE with growth
potential.
Responsibilities and Functions- Administration
Act as liaison to the CON Senior Administration, advising on matters related to the operation and
success of CONAT, to include fiscal responsibility and facility management.
Act as liaison to the larger University community, facilitating access to resources and services for
CONAT faculty and staff.
Develop and refine policies for CONAT in accordance with College and University policies.
Serve as a member of the CON Leadership Team, facilitating the engagement of CONAT faculty
and staff in school-wide initiatives.
Contribute to CON strategic planning.
Represent GHSU and CON to prospective students, clinical agencies, and other stakeholders.
Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs to recruit and retain students.
Serve as a resource for students enrolled in programs and for the faculty coordinating and teaching
courses.
Collaborate with the Chairs and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to develop and facilitate
curricular changes and advance educational programs.
Participate in efforts to recruit a high caliber, diverse faculty to advance the teaching, research and
practice missions of the CON.
Participate in the assignment of courses and appropriate teaching loads and advisement of chairs
for CONAT faculty activities.
Participate in the annual performance/merit evaluation of faculty assigned to CONAT.
Serve as the chief spokesperson for CONAT and liaison to promote the missions of GHSU.
Develop future potential of Assistant Dean role to build and/or assume leadership of other distance
campuses.

N. Program Directors/Assistant Directors
In collaboration with the Senior Administration, program directors coordinate the successful delivery of
assigned programs in the College of Nursing. The following programs are assigned directors: BSN
(also an assistant-director 10.07), FNP/PNP, CNL, NA, DNP (also an assistant director), and PhD.
Responsibilities and Functions
With the support of the program manager (coordinator), assumes primary responsibility for
managing and coordinating the assigned programs to ensure student success and compliance with
campus, USG, BON, and CCNE standards.
Collaborates with the Office of Academic Affairs to address curricular matters at the school, campus
and system levels.
Collaborates with the Office of Student Affairs to coordinate the admission process for students
interested in and applying to the program.
Collaborates with the Office of Student Affairs to address student matters at the school, campus
and system levels, and to facilitate the successful matriculation of those enrolled.
Serves as a member of the curricular and admissions committees for the assigned programs.
Makes recommendations to the Business Office regarding budgetary and instructional needs.
With the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Department Chairs, assigns faculty to teach in
program courses as required.
Collaborates with the Academic Clinical Coordinator to identify clinical placement needs for the
program and to attain clinical sites as appropriate.
Serves as a member of the CON Leadership Team and a member of the College Academic Affairs
and Outcomes Assessment Committees.
Keeps abreast of requirements and standards of licensure and accreditation, and recommends
changes to the program operation as needed to ensure compliance, effectiveness, and relevance.
Assists the Office of Academic Affairs with preparation for accreditation and associated activities.
Represents the College of Nursing on the appropriate campus, system and state committees and
boards.
Provide periodic updates to the College web content manager to ensure accuracy and relevancy of
program/curricular content.
