Related TIGERS Learning Expectation: trustworthy individuals SAY: Copy down a powerful quote (23 sentences) using MLA format “.............” (p. #) “As the man from the car behind us started tapping on the window, I moved the umbrella away from my leg. Then Mona and my mother were getting out of the car. I got out after them; and while everyone else was inspecting the damage we’d done, I threw the umbrella down a sewer” (Jen, p.7) MEAN: Clarify what the quote means by explaining the context (who, what, where, why, when and how). Be sure to explain what the situation is, who said the quote, what the quote is about (one well written, organized paragraph will suffice). The main character is the narrator and is also the person that says this quote. The main character, her sister, and her mother were in a small car accident. The man who was also involved in the accident was coming up to them to inspect the damage done with her mother, who was the one driving. Her mother put her head down for a while, causing her to think that her mother was dead. At this point, the main character realized the love for her mother and threw her white umbrella in the sewer because the umbrella was a sign of her abandoning her culture and becoming more American, thus betraying her mother. MATTER: Explain the importance of this quote to the story AND show how it can teach us a lesson about one of the six TIGERS Learning Expectations (one well written, organized paragraph will suffice). This quote is an important part of the story because it is the part where she throws away the white umbrella. The white umbrella was a symbol of her abandoning her culture and becoming more American, which was also a betrayal against her mother. She got the white umbrella from Ms. Crossman knowing her mother didn’t want her to become materialistic. After getting the umbrella, the main character even told Ms.Crossman that she wished Ms.Crossman was her mother, instantly regretting it. When she threw the umbrella into the sewer, it shows that she learned an important lesson and reflected on her actions. It wraps up the story leaving the reader with a feeling of content that she learned a valuable lesson. This teaches us about the Tiger Value of “Trustworthy Individuals” because part of being a trustworthy individual is when someone “takes responsibility for their actions”. In this case, she took responsibility for her action of accepting the white umbrella by reflecting on what she had done, which was abandoning her culture to become American and betraying her mom. After reflecting, she threw away the white umbrella because she realized what she had done was not right and felt guilty for it, especially after she thought her mother was dead. CREATE: Create a drawing, a collage, a movie, a presentation or a poem that either shows the context of your chosen quote OR summarizes the lesson one can learn from this story. We are looking for depth of original thought and creativity. This drawing shows the context of the quote, which is when the main character throws down the white umbrella into the sewer. Since the umbrella was a sign of betrayal against her mom and abandoning of her culture to become more American, when she threw the umbrella away, it shows that she learned a lesson not to do those things and to return to they way things were.
