Do all
a turkey
ys gobble??
It's a guy thing. Only
O
toms go
obble. Hens make a cliccking noise.
Can turkeys fly?
Dome
esticated turkeys can't, but wild turrkeys can flyy up to 55 m
mph for shorrt distances.
They''re also fast on their fee
et, hitting la
and speeds o
of up to 25 m
mph.
Cranberries?
The word cranberry comes from the 17th century Dutch and German settlers. They
referred to the piquant fruits as cranberries because in the spring, the fruit’s plant
produces pink blossoms that resemble the head and neck of a crane. Toms gobble in
the spring and fall to attract hens for mating. In the wild, toms also like to gobble
when they hear loud sounds and when they settle in for the night. On a still day, a
gobbling turkey can be heard a mile away.
How did turkey become part of Thanksgiving?
Availability probably dictated menu choice. At the time the Pilgrims first celebrated
Thanksgiving, turkey was a dietary mainstay. In fact, they ate so much turkey that it
probably wasn't much of a treat. Turkey meat from wild and domesticated birds was
also a staple in the diet of many Indian tribes.
Was the "Turkey Trot" ballroom dance named for turkeys?
As a matter of fact, yes. Dancers circle the floor in short, jerky steps reminiscent of
the movement of turkeys.
What do you call that thing that hangs off the turkey's beak?
The flesh-like appendage that dangles from a turkey's forehead is called the "snood".
It's very long on male turkeys and hangs down over the beak.
What's that fleshy red growth at the turkey's neck?
The anatomically correct term is "wattle". When a tom is feeling amorous, the wattle
and the snood become very bright red.
What do turkeys eat?
Our turkeys are primarily fed corn and soybean meal that's fortified with vitamins
and minerals; kind of like a multivitamin for turkeys. They ingest no hormones or
steroids.
Has Thanksgiving always been celebrated on the same day?
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln officially set aside the last Thursday in November as a day
for national thanksgiving, praise and prayer. Hoping that an extra seven days in the
Christmas shopping season would be a boon to retailers, Franklin Roosevelt moved the
date forward a week in 1939. His decision proved unpopular and two years later,
Congress passed a law that restored Thanksgiving to the last Thursday in November.

Great American Smoke Out
This year, the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smoke out is Nov. 17. This event, celebrating its 35th anniversary, promotes efforts to help smokers kick the habit. Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that 21 percent of U.S. adults smoke cigarettes. While this represents an improvement from previous levels, tobacco use remains among the leading causes of preventable illness. In fact, there is evidence that for smokers, tobacco cessation is the single most important health decision that will improve both quality of life and life expectancy. Cigarette smoking is linked to both of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States: heart disease and cancer. Many cancers are linked to cigarette use, including lung cancer – for which cigarette smoking is the single most significant risk factor. Smoking is linked to other diseases as well, most notably emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which are chronic lung diseases that accelerate lung aging and lead to uncomfortable breathing‐related symptoms. Stopping smoking is by no means easy. Many estimates indicate that it takes several attempts to successfully kick the cigarette habit permanently. Many lifelong smokers will attest to the fact that they want to quit but find it difficult. Many also share in my recommendation to adolescents and young adults not to start this unhealthy habit in the first place. Yet for those who want to stop smoking, there is help. The American Cancer Society recommends that smokers set a date to quit and begin making preparations. That is what the Great American Smoke out is all about? Now is a good time to start planning. Start by marking your quit date on the calendar and telling family and friends of your plan. Develop your support network. There are many options ranging from joining a support group to identifying a friend or family member who successfully stopped smoking to assist you in your efforts. Ask acquaintances not to smoke around you. The national tobacco quitline, (800) QUIT‐NOW, also provides the assistance of experienced counselors to help you quit. Be sure to remove all tobacco‐related products and paraphernalia (ashtrays, lighters) from the house, car and workplace. If you smoke a lot, you may want to prepare for how to deal with nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Stock up on nicotine gum or patches, available in local pharmacies and grocery stores. You might even want to talk to your doctor ahead of time about prescribing one of a number of medications helpful in breaking the cigarette habit. If you have tried to quit smoking before, consider the challenges that you faced that might have led to failure. Think about ways to alter your routines to help you stay away from tobacco. This may include avoiding certain people, places or habits. Conssider all the benefits of permanentlly breaking the habit off cigarette u
