Compassionate, Comprehensive Services for Children and Families in Need Family Matters Special 2012 Annual Report JUDSONCENTER.ORG DEAR FRIENDS, Founded in 1924, Judson Center has evolved into a premier non-profit organization serving children and their families contending with serious issues in their lives. For 89 years, we have been changing the destiny and restoring childhood for children who have been abused and neglected, and still others who struggle with the challenges of developmental disabilities, severe emotional impairments, and autism spectrum disorder. Our reputation for excellence and innovation makes us the go-to-agency even when others have given up. Whether teaching a parent to create a healthy and stable family, helping a child with autism to develop, or supporting independence for a person with disabilities, we deliver solutions for kids and families facing tough challenges. Today, many children remain at risk due to neglect related to poverty. Others are being raised by parents who themselves were the victims of poor parenting and lack understanding when it comes to parenting. Other parents wrestle with a mental illness or a substance abuse challenge and lack access to treatments that will change their lives and allow them to be better parents. Judson Center believes that strong families are essential to restoring hope and changing the destiny of children at risk. To do that, Judson Center has developed a wide array of services and works tirelessly to provide families the support, understanding and resources they need to live out their hopes and dreams and raise healthy kids. Over the years, Judson Center has become a trusted source in our communities for building strong families and rescuing children at risk. As a result, Judson Center was given the opportunity to expand its services to foster and adoptive families this year through the addition of two new programs, “Foster Care Navigators” and “Post Adoption Resource Centers.” As the name suggests, “foster care navigators” guide prospective and current foster parents through the sometimes intimidating path to fostering. Adoptive families quite often face some special challenges. Through our Post Adoption Resource Centers, families who have adopted children through the State of Michigan foster care system can now find support, healing, and solutions to the unique circumstances these blended families face. Going forward, Judson Center is firmly committed to building on our current knowledge and skills so that more families, whether facing the challenges of poverty, disabilities, autism or compromised mental health, can find the path to becoming strong and living out their hopes and dreams to create brighter futures for themselves. It is only with your help that Judson Center is able to continue to build strong families and rescue at risk kids. Thank you for being champions for Michigan’s children and families. Warm regards, Cameron D. Hosner President and CEO John C. Carter Board Chair CHANGING THE FUTURE ONE FAMILY AT A TIME Jason Michaels and his daughter Carly have made a good start on the path to a better life. They are able to enjoy a more stable home because of the support they received from Judson Center’s Visitation Coaching program and Jason’s commitment to being a good parent. Carly had been staying with family members while Jason confronted his drug addiction which stood in the way of his being the kind of parent that she deserved and that he wanted to be. Although Jason had never parented before, he wanted to learn how to be a good parent. With this in mind, he committed himself to his sobriety. When it was time for Carly to rejoin her father, a Judson Center social worker was there to ensure an easy transition. She helped Jason set appropriate goals which included to obtain and maintain employment, establish a suitable home, and learn parenting skills. Then she helped him work toward these objectives. Jason was especially eager to develop an understanding of his daughter’s developmental needs and how he could best parent her. He was able to complete the program early. Initially it was expected that he would receive support for four months. He achieved his goals in only two. Jason was always open to guidance prompts and modeling from his social worker as she observed his interactions with his daughter. He always had lots of questions as he worked to be the best parent he could be. He learned to help Carly with the difficult feelings she had due to their ten-month separation. He also learned about age-appropriate physical and emotional development; some of this made additionally challenging by Carly’s physical disability. He eventually was able to put structure in their life with family rules and routines around school, homework and hygiene. While Jason worked on his parenting skills he was also busy attending to his sobriety. In addition to going to Narcotics Anonymous meetings three times a week, he was inspired to start a substance abuse group which he leads weekly. He is proud to be able to take a leadership role in helping others. All this hard work is paying off. Although she always looked up to her father, Carly’s bond with him is stronger than before. As a result, Jason has greater confidence as a father and can see the positive results of his accomplishments. He told his social worker, “Today I finally feel like Carly and I are going to be just fine.” Names changed to respect the family’s privacy. 2 RESTORING FAMILIES – BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES CHILD WELFARE Creating stronger families through family preservation and providing stability for children through foster care and adoption. “They make me feel like I’m part of a family.” – Sarah, a foster child 3 2012 JUDSON CENTER LEADERSHIP Executive Team Cameron D. The Flinn Foundation has made it possible for Judson Center to train our therapists in Motivational Interviewing (MI) which is recognized as a best practice treatment. MI is a collaborative conversation to strengthen a person’s own motivation for and commitment to change. • In an effort to expand the number of foster families, the Foster Care Navigators Program has been established. The goal of the program is to support the recruiting, retaining and encouragement of great people to become wonderful foster parents. Help is available from pre-application information through licensing to smooth any obstacles that may arise. • Judson Center has opened two Post Adoption Resource Centers serving 23 Michigan counties. The centers address the needs of families who have adopted a child from the child welfare system. Understanding that there are issues, including loss and trauma, that are unique to these adopted children and their families guides the work of the PARC staff. Families receive support tailored to their specific needs. 10 Individuals Mr. and Mrs. Dave Adams Mr. and Mrs. Terry Adams Mr. and Mrs. Emerson J. Addison Mr. and Mrs. Andy E.
