Measurement of Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) by
Chemiluminescence (CL) Assay
– Estimation of Oxidation Stability of Polymers -1995
Introduction
Irganox1010 (BASF, 0.5%, 1.0%) as a
phenolic antioxidant was used. Time-course of
CL of PP was measured by CLA-FS4 under
200C, oxygen flow (Fig.1).
System:CLA-FS4、CLS-ST3
Fig.2 shows the results OIT of each PP with or
without additives.
Irganox1010 (BASF,
2000ppm) as a phenolic antioxidant, and
Irgafox168 (BASF, 4000ppm) as a
phosphorus b ased antioxidant were used.
Polypropylene was molded 5 times at 230C.
Time-course of CL of PP was measured
under
non-isothermal
conditions,
150C-250C, and oxygen flow. The order of
OIT is oxidized (Ox-) PP at 230C > PP
virgin > Ox- PP+Irganox1010 > OxPP+Irgafos168 > Ox- PP+mix.

The chemiluminescence (CL) technique provides simple rapid procedure for the detection of oxidation levels
and oxidation stabilities of polymer without any chemical reagents or delicate skills.
CL assay enable to estimate the slight oxidation at the early stage and the oxidation stability of samples. To
estimate the oxidation stability, OIT measurement is effective.
OIT measurement can be carried out using heating and oxygen flow. The CL profile records an increase once

the antioxidants are consumed and can clearly identify the onset of oxidative degradation. By measuring OIT, the
