•
• Students work in groups of 3 or 4 with 2 pieces of tape per
group (tape can be reused for each person in the group).
• Each group will also need a meter stick to measure the
distance and a chair.
• Goal: Each person will measure their own jump height and
calculate their hang-time.
• Procedure: Stand facing the wall; Reach as high as you can
and stick a piece of tape to the wall
• Jump and stick a second piece of tape to the wall as high as
you can
• Measure the distance between the two pieces of tape (d) in
meters. Record this measurement.
Questions
(½)at2
d = vit +
Vi = 0 m/s; a = 10 m/s2 (use positive value)
Therefore: d = (½)at2
We can rearrange the formula to solve for time,

• Since this is only time up, double t to get the total
hang time
• What is your hang time?
1. What is your acceleration after your feet
leave the floor?
2. Is there anything you can do once your feet
leave the floor to make you jump higher?
3. What happens to your speed while you are in
the air?
