Children’s House
November 2012
Dear Parents,
"One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child."
- Maria Montessori
Our Montessori family looks forward to go to Evanston Montessori Children’s
House every morning and every afternoon where they start their day by singing
songs, sharing their experience or their favorite toy with their friends and then
getting together at dining area. It’s our pleasure to watch them serve snacks to each
other when it is their turn. They love to help each other and feel proud to present
an activity to another child.
History
This month children have learned the concept of time. They are learning about the
number of days in a week, number of months in a year and the process of reading
the time from a clock. They have also learned names of the days and names of the
months in English and in Spanish. The child who is in-charge writes the date on
the calendar and other children watch him/her. This way they are also learning to
write numbers. “Our calendar is empty,” said Devika in surprise. “Because the
month is finished,” said other children. One day when we were talking about time,
Nolan brought globe and continent map and asked his friends, “Do you how much
time does it take to go to India? And, answered at the same moment, “Two minutes
and twenty seconds.” Children know that when it is day here it is night in Asia and
Australia.
Halloween Parade
Children were overjoyed when they
arrived in their Halloween costumes and
visited our neighbors for trick or treat on
Wednesday, October 31st. We are
fortunate to have loving neighborhood
that cherish our children’s presence in the
area.
Parent Education
On Tuesday, October 30th we had
parent education where they
learned how children absorb Math
lessons with us and also saw an
exhibition of our math activities.
Visit to Wagner Farm
We visited the Wagner pumpkin farm on Saturday, October 20th. Children enjoyed
hay rides, and played different games on that beautiful, bright day.
Nature Project
Parents took children on nature walk to bring their attention to the beautiful fall
environment. They were excited to set up a display of their projects made with
natural objects. Ikibana, Japanese flower arrangement, was their most favorite
arrangement.
Math
Older children are learning addition and
subtraction and are enjoying banker’s
game. In this game one child is a banker,
two children are customers, and one is a
mediator. Younger ones are now ready to
learn teen numbers.
Language
Children are developing their awareness of beginning, middle and ending sounds.
Having their own library at their Montessori is another joyful experience for them.
We can see more children in the reading corner now. They love to borrow a book
and talk about main character, setting and plot of a story. They also love to predict
endings. We encourage you to discuss the same with them.
Habla Espaniol
Children are learning new songs in Spanish. Their favorite song is “Jugamos en el
bosque”

Practical Life
As you know practical life is the foundation of Montessori classroom. Our children
enjoy the activities that we change every month. All these activities develop their
eye hand coordination, concentration, independence, confidence, problem solving
skills, and sense of order.
