2011-2012 Gifted and Talented Elementary Saturday Institute
Des Moines Public Schools Gifted and Talented Department
The purpose of the Gifted and Talented Saturday Institute is to provide enrichment
opportunities for highly motivated, gifted and talented students—grades 4-5.
Registrations should be mailed to the G/T office, Central Academy, 1912
Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50309-3312.
Class sizes are limited. Classes will be filled in the order in which registrations
are received. Applications should be postmarked no later than December 12,
2011. You will be contacted with the class assignment.
Institute sessions will be held on Saturday mornings. Classes will be held at Central
Academy, 1912 Grand Ave. Classes range from 4 sessions to 5 sessions—January
7 through February 18, 2012.
The cost of a class is $50.00. For students who participate in the fee
waiver program, the cost is $25. Other scholarships are available.

February 4, 11, 18

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Ins and Outs of Animals

Have you ever wanted to see inside living things? Are you curious about why
living things are built the way they are built? In this class there will be
opportunities for dissection of preserved specimens as well as computer
simulations. This is a course about the diversity of living things and the
adaptions that make them successful.
Intaglio

What is intaglio? It is an artistic carving process in which images are etched
onto flat metal plates and then transferred onto paper by a printing press. In
this class you will focus on two intaglio processes. Additionally, you will study
the artwork of several masters of the intaglio medium including: Francisco
Goya, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Albrecht Durer.

you! Find out what it takes to be a successful engineer by exploring various
types of engineering through math, projects, games and more.

Let’s face it, seven days without a pun makes one weak! So join this session all
about language and wordplay. Learn more about puns, oxymorons, anagrams,
palindromes and other figures of speech. In addition, you will keep a journal
and sample some great books. No prizes in this course – a pun is its own
“reword’!
Math for the Fun of It!

This class will introduce you to upper level mathematics. You will build on math
skills while exploring topics in Algebra, Geometry, Probability, and Calculus
through problem solving, creative movement tasks, games, and graphing
calculators and computers.
