10th Grade

Dear Incoming PreAP 10th Grade English Student and Parent or
Guardian,
Welcome to PreAP English II, and congratulations on choosing to pursue
a rigiourous and advanced academic course.
Statistics prove that continued reading, especially of AP calibur texts,
improves test scores and increases student success by preparing students
for the challenges of a college curriculum and the demands of a
knowledge-based workforce.
For our PreAP English classes, we want our students to build a repertoire
of fiction and nonfiction while continuing to think deeply, critically, and
analytically while reading. Reading will not only help students develop
that repertoire of texts to pull from when preparing for the AP tests junior
and senior year, but it will also prepare students for the academic rigor of
AP English texts, enable students to see how long it will take them to read
a book, and will prepare them for the independent reading that takes place
in a PreAP English course.
Students in PreAP English II will be responsible for reading the following
book before the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. They will need to
have the book to bring to class during the first 6 weeks.
A Separate Peace, by John Knowles
As students read, they will complete the Pre-AP Summer Reading
Assignment. There will be multiple evaluations over the novel during the
first six weeks, including discussion, multiple choice, and written
responses.

Incoming sophomore students,
In order to access your Summer Reading Assignment, you will need to join my Google Classroom.
You are getting this information in advance of summer, so you can complete the packet before the
first day of the 2017-2018 school year. You may print the packet and turn in a copy, or you may use
an app such as Notability to save the document to your iPad and make your marks directly on it. If
you choose to use Notability, it is a district provided app, so be sure you have it loaded on your
iPad before summer. Once summer begins, I won’t be able to have the district push it out to you
until school starts back.
Regardless of how you choose to complete the Summer Reading Assignment, you will need to
become a student in my Google Classroom. In order to access my Google classroom, you will need
to download the Google Classroom app, then add a class. My class code is:
ju7nubm
The code is case sensitive, so make sure you type it in exactly as it is above.
If the classroom does not work for you, make sure you are using your school issued email address.
This is necessary for a lot of what we do throughout the year, so it is important to know your email
address and password.
If you have any questions, you may come by room 806 or email me.
