Influenza has symptoms similar to a cold but they are usually more severe and come on quite suddenly. The flu is commonly thought of as a respiratory illness, but the whole body can be affected. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, pain in the muscles around the eyes, fatigue and weakness. Most other viruses, such as colds, have milder symptoms that don’t last as long. Prevention is the key. Get the flu shot each year. Keep up your resistance to infection with a good diet, plenty of rest, and regular exercise. Avoid exposure to the virus. Most importantly, wash your hands often and keep your hands away from your nose, eyes and mouth. RN Students Train at Care Suites Walker Methodist Care Suites partnered with Normandale Community College last semester and is looking forward to continuing the program again this semester. Nursing students in the R.N. Program will be visiting us on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting February 18, 2016 for their clinical experience. Many of you will again have the opportunity to interact with these students. They will be in uniform and all will have name tags on so they can be easily identified. We are looking forward to this experience. I hope you all enjoy the relationship. LaVerne, Jack, Evalyn & Carol cheer on the “Purple” during a football gathering held earlier this winter. Spotlight on Coralie Coralie moved to Walker Care Suites in April of 2015. You may have noticed her enjoying neighborhood walks, relishing the outdoors as she has always done. For many years, golf was her primary sport of choice. She also likes traveling to San Diego and Northern Minnesota, where she can visit her sister. Coralie lived on a farm in North Dakota as a young child, being one of seven siblings. When her older brothers were grown and had left home, her father sold the farm, moving the family into town. They eventually relocated to the Minneapolis area, where Coralie attended high school. Coralie raised five children – two daughters and three sons - and enjoyed being a stayat-home mom. When her children were older, she began working in the elementary school system. Her mothering skills were put to good use in her role as a teacher’s aide. Initially, she worked in a classroom where two “rambunctious” boys were quite disruptive to the rest of the class. She would take these boys to the library to give their beleaguered teacher a little break. She and the boys spent time reading books to each other, and the boys benefitted from Coralie’s calming, gentle nature. She was eventually promoted to administrative assistant to the Principal and was a treasured employee until her retirement. In all, she worked for the school district for 25 years. Coralie has 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with her most recent greatgranddaughter, Olivia, being born just before Christmas. • • • • • Coralie’s favorite color is Yellow Favorite ice cream is Vanilla Favorite place traveled is California An avid golfer, she once scored a “Hole In One!” Met singer/actor Robert Goulet in Las Vegas Ann S February 2 Phil A. Or sometimes it comes in this form: "I don't know how I'm going to get through this." Or, "I don't know what's ahead." This morning a woman said to me, "I guess I just have to make it up as I go with what I have." An image flashed through my mind. I saw piano keys. There are fifty-two white keys and thirty-six black keys on a piano keyboard. That's all. There's no adding or subtracting. And a pianist uses all eighty-eight keys to create beautiful music. Sometimes there are a few "klunkers" or missed notes. Sometimes there is sheet music in front of the musician with a composition created by someone else. But other times, a musician simply has to improvise with no script, using eighty-eight keys and whatever is in their fingers and heart. I'm wondering if most of life falls into the realm of improvising. We'd like for there to always be sheet music in front of us that we can simply play. Sometimes there is. But there are plenty of times when we need to improvise. And when we find ourselves in "improvise-mode" God says, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior."
