Oregon State Standard = Understand how changes in a physical
environment affect human activity.
Less is More
Vocabulary Words = civilization, theocracy, hieroglyphics, terrace
We will be reading from The American Republic page 22-26 today
Using each of the section titles below, read and make two summary comments
from each section starting on page 22.
Cities and Empires
Early American Civilizations – Many advanced civilizations were in place in
Central and South America when the Europeans showed up in the early 1500’s.
They included the Olmec, the Maya, the Aztec, and the Inca peoples.
The Maya – Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize were where the Mayan
people planted maize, beans, sweet potatoes, and other vegetables. They also
built pyramids that are still present today (built by enslaved prisoners)
Mayan Cities –Tikal was the largest Mayan city and had many temples built for
the many gods they honored. There society was a theocracy, a society ruled by
religious leaders. Hieroglyphics were also developed by the Mayan people.
Transport and Trade – No wheeled vehicles meant everything was carried on
human backs. Farmers brought their vegetables and traded (bartered) with other
merchants for what they needed.
Decline of Civilization – 900 AD was the start of the decline for the Mayan people.
By 1100 AD, the towns were almost ghost towns. Over-planting, too many people
living with not enough resources, and slave revolt are some ideas about why this
happened, but nobody knows for sure.
The Aztec – In 1325 Aztec hunters (near Mexico City) came upon a sign of an
eagle sitting on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. This was the sign that meant
the island was to be their new home.
Tenochtitlan - The largest ancient city in the Americas, and the World at that
point, was built by pulling soil from the bottom of the lake and filling in areas to
grows crops on. It was a center of trade and amazement for anyone who saw it.
War and Religion – The Aztecs grew into a military empire by 1400 after
conquering their neighbors and enslaving them. They were a theocracy who
enjoyed human sacrifices.
A Great City Remembered – Tenochtitlan was a marvel to the eye, and some
European soldiers even thought it was more magnificent than Rome and other
great European cities of the time.
The Inca – The city of Cuzco was formed around 1200 AD. By 1438, the emperor
started conquering neighbors and built an empire that stretched 3000 miles from
Columbia to Chile.
Life in the Empire – At its height, the Inca had a population of over 9 million
people and they had made 10,000 miles of stone-paved roads that ran through
deserts and jungles.
