Main Activity
Objective
To read Roman
Numerals to 100
.
Activities incl. differentiation
Key
questions/
focus
What is a roman numeral. Where do we see them?
Estalish it was a way of counting that was replaced
with digits and 0 to give place value. Show 7 letters
used for Roman Numerals. Can the children decide
what they represent? Using talk partners children
discuss and record what they think they represent.
Show and establish true meaning.
Record in books.
Explain how system works using power point. i.e.
numers are added across in order of size eg. XII = 10
plus 1 plus 1 = 12. Any numbers that are smaller
than letter before it are subtracted i.e. IX is 10 – 1 =
9.
Show children some Roman numerals and ask them
to write in books and decide what they are.
Write
calculation on
board in roman
numerals.
Success Criteria
Have you recognised
the roman numerals
Have you recorded the
7 letters in your books
and shown what they
represent?
Have you added all the
letters together?
Have you subtracted
any letters that are
smaller than letter in
front?
Plenary

Have you calculated the
answer?
Give children set
of numbers
including negative
numbers. Can
they order them as
a group.
Ensure
understanding of
order.
I can count fwd

steps of 4. Use
counting stick and
children follow
Have you looked at the
letters and worked out
what they represent?
Have you written the
answer in Roman
Numerals?
Recap previous days lesson on Roman
Numerals. Address any misconceptions found
from marking.
Assess understanding by playing roman numeral
tennis. Serve roman numberal on white board
they hit back with equivalent number. Swop
and serve number, they serve back with roman
numeral.
Misconceptions might include not subtracting when smaller
numeral before larger.
Y3SI can read and use

time.
Have you listened to the
question?
Have you found an
efficient method to
calculate?
Have you calculated?
Have you written down the
answer?
Have you looked at the
ones you got wrong and
understood why?
Discuss mental strategies. Show sum flash
adding on smart board. Using diferent
calculations ask children what is the quickest
way to calculate each time. i.e. counting on,
rounding and adjusting etc.
Read mental maths test out to children, give
them a copy of questions.. How would you
calculate each question? In talk partners work
through the questions and discuss the most
efficient way to calculate. Address any
misconceptions.. Take questions away.
Misconceptions might include adjusting the
wrong way.
LM work around room where needed to help
develop thinking.
Y3D-Y4D
Children listen to mental maths CD and answer
questions in given time.
Mark together and address misconceptions.
Play beat the
teacher maths
trail.
Remind
children of
mental
strategies to
use.
Fri
Assessment
4 times table test
including finding
a quarter and 25%
of given numbers
I understand and
can use negative
numbers.
Have you read the
question properly?
Have you applied what
you know?
Have you written a
clear answer?
Give children a plastic number line between two. Ask them
to write 0 in the middle. Where would you put 6? Where
would you put -6 repeat with other numbers. Give me a
number that lies between 0 and -4. Repeat with other
numbers.
ASSESSMENT:
Give children assessment questions about negative numbers.
Show on smart board and children write answers in their
books.
Mark questions together addressing any misconceptions.
LM to check books later to check understanding.
HOMEWORK: Learn 4 times table by heart including finding 25% and ¼ of given numbers
