Count in steps of 25 Count fwd/bkwds How many 25’s in 100? What is 25 in relation to 100 i.e. ¼ What comes after? Before? Main Activity Objective To read Roman Numerals to 100 . Activities incl. differentiation Key questions/ focus What is a roman numeral. Where do we see them? Estalish it was a way of counting that was replaced with digits and 0 to give place value. Show 7 letters used for Roman Numerals. Can the children decide what they represent? Using talk partners children discuss and record what they think they represent. Show and establish true meaning. Record in books. Explain how system works using power point. i.e. numers are added across in order of size eg. XII = 10 plus 1 plus 1 = 12. Any numbers that are smaller than letter before it are subtracted i.e. IX is 10 – 1 = 9. Show children some Roman numerals and ask them to write in books and decide what they are. Write calculation on board in roman numerals. Success Criteria Have you recognised the roman numerals Have you recorded the 7 letters in your books and shown what they represent? Have you added all the letters together? Have you subtracted any letters that are smaller than letter in front? Plenary LM work with Y3D children to ensure understanding. What is the answer? Eg. Address any misconceptions found from marking. Assess understanding by playing roman numeral tennis. Serve roman numberal on white board they hit back with equivalent number. Swop and serve number, they serve back with roman numeral. Misconceptions might include not subtracting when smaller numeral before larger. Misconceptions might include adjusting the wrong way. LM work around room where needed to help develop thinking. Y3D-Y4D Children listen to mental maths CD and answer questions in given time. Mark together and address misconceptions. Play beat the teacher maths trail. Remind children of mental strategies to use. Fri Assessment 4 times table test including finding a quarter and 25% of given numbers I understand and can use negative numbers. Have you read the question properly? Have you applied what you know? Have you written a clear answer? Give children a plastic number line between two. Ask them to write 0 in the middle. Where would you put 6? Where would you put -6 repeat with other numbers. Give me a number that lies between 0 and -4. Repeat with other numbers. ASSESSMENT: Give children assessment questions about negative numbers. Show on smart board and children write answers in their books. Mark questions together addressing any misconceptions. LM to check books later to check understanding.
