Magnet program expands to 36 schools
I
n 1993, Mabel Hoggard, Clark
High School, and the Las Vegas
Academy were the very first
magnet programs to open in the
Las Vegas Valley as part of our
efforts to desegregate the Clark
County School District. Because
of the tremendous success of our
magnet programs, the demand
has greatly exceeded the available
seats for students. During the
2014-2015 school year, CCSD
announced an 11 school magnet
expansion, bringing the total
offerings to 36 magnet schools.
Additional quality programs mean
more choice and access for the
students of CCSD.
Magnet programs benefit the
community by:
• Improving teaching and learning
to increase student achievement
• Offering school choice
• Providing educational equity
• Improving school integration
• Uniting school and community
through focused curriculum

What are Magnet/CTA programs?
CCSD magnet programs offer learning opportunities
related to various themes for interested students. Students
from across the District may apply to a magnet program
regardless of the region in which they reside, however,
transportation will only be provided to students living
within the designated transportation boundary for the
magnet program. The purposes of magnet programs are
to improve student achievement, promote diversity, and
create an awareness of career opportunities relative to the
fields of study in which students may be interested.
Why only grades 1-10?
Parents do occasionally ask why we do not take
kindergartners and 11th and 12th grade applicants. Magnet
programs begin at 1st grade as students typically will have
a better understanding in the purpose of school and have
time to develop interests. Secondary magnet programs
only accept 9th and 10th grade students because they
have programs of study in which a student must participate
for a minimum of three years. Students do not have to
reapply annually.
How many schools have Magnet/CTA
Programs?
There are currently 36 Magnet/CTA campuses including
nine elementary schools, ten middle schools, and
seventeen high schools.
Magnet/CTAs are located throughout the valley.
Information on school locations, including maps, will follow
in the next section.
What are the admission requirements
for a Magnet/CTA program?
Entry to an elementary or middle school magnet program
is interest-based. After researching schools and program
offerings, parents/guardians of interested students must
submit an online or paper application to up to three magnet
schools or programs by the annual specified deadline. If
there are more applications than there are seats available,
a computerized random lottery will be used to select
students. Entry to a high school magnet or CTA program is
criteria and interest-based. After researching schools and
program offerings, parents/guardians of interested students
must submit an online or paper application on or before
the annually specified deadline. Students must meet the
minimum qualifying criteria in order to be considered in the
lottery process. If there are more qualified applicants than
there are seats available, a computerized random lottery will
be used to select students.
Will transportation be provided?
It is the responsibility of the parent to verify transportation
eligibility. Transportation zones may be viewed at:
http://magnet.ccsd.net
Are siblings kept together when they
apply to the same school?
It is the intent of CCSD to avoid separating siblings when
possible, but there is no guarantee that both siblings will be
selected to the same school. The only exception is made for
twins/triplets (multiples). If a set of twins/triplets (multiples)
apply to the same school and one twin/triplet (multiple) is
accepted, the other twin/triplet (multiple), if qualified, will
automatically be offered a seat at the same school.
May a home school, private school, or charter
school student apply to Magnet/CTAs?
Yes. These students must submit an application to
Magnet/CTAs of their choice. If they qualify, are accepted,
and choose to enroll, they must attend the Magnet/CTA as
full-time students and are not permitted to attend as a parttime student to take individual classes.

(continued from the previous page)
Will my child have the opportunity
to participate in after-school and
extracurricular activities (i.e., football,
basketball) in the Magnet/CTAs?
Since many of the after-school activities are closely
related to the regular instructional program, every effort
will be made to provide Magnet/CTA students with
these opportunities. At Basic, Clark, Canyon Springs,
Del Sol, Desert Pines, Eldorado, Rancho, Spring Valley,
SECTA, and Valley high schools, the students may
participate in any sports or activities currently offered
at that school. All Clark County School District (CCSD)
and Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association (NIAA)
rules and regulations apply. Specific information
applicable to students in Magnet/CTA is included in the
NIAA Handbook, NAC 386.787. ATECH, VTCTA, ECTA,
NWCTA, SWCTA, WCTA, and Las Vegas Academy
do not participate in the NIAA athletics but offer
many extracurricular activities in which students can
participate. If a student attends ATECH, VTCTA, ECTA,
NWCTA, SWCTA, WCTA, or the Las Vegas Academy,
it is the responsibility of the parent and student to check
with the student’s zoned school in regard to eligibility
for participation in sports and other activities (i.e. football,
basketball). Athletes attending ATECH, VTCTA, ECTA,
NWCTA, SWCTA, WCTA, or the Las Vegas Academy
are responsible for their own transportation to the
zoned school in order to participate in practices,
matches, and games.
Will my child have the opportunity to
participate in co-curricular activities
(i.e., cheerleading, pep squads, etc.)
at his/ her zoned school?
If a student attends ATECH, VTCTA, ECTA, NWCTA,
SWCTA, WCTA, or the Las Vegas Academy, the parent
and student must check with the student’s zoned school
in regard to eligibility for participation.
If my child attends a Magnet program in
an elementary or middle school, may he/
she continue in these programs at the
middle or high school level?
Yes, but placement is not guaranteed. All students must
submit an application to up to three Magnet/CTAs or
programs by the annually specified application deadline.
The District reserves 25% of the available seats in middle
and high school programs for qualifying incoming students
who attended a magnet school at the lower level. Those
students who are not selected in this 25% will be placed in
the general lottery.
Can my child enter a program in high school?
Acceptance into Magnet/CTAs is based on specific
admission procedures and/or requirements. These may
be met without being enrolled in a Magnet School prior to
middle school or high school.
Will my child receive all the educational
services available to him/her in a
regular school?
A Magnet/CTA student will receive the educational
services that the District provides to students in each of
its schools.
Are there any costs associated with
entrance into Magnet/CTAs?
No application, tuition, or entrance fees are charged for
admission. Some schools or programs may require a
program fee for enrolled students. Contact individual school
sites for information regarding program fees.
If my child does not like the Magnet/CTA
program, can he/she transfer to his/her
zoned school?
The Magnet/CTA shall be considered the home school
of students who are selected and who are in attendance
at the beginning of the school year. Students who are
accepted and confirm attendance on the Form of Intent
are expected to attend the Magnet/CTA for at least one
school year.

Arts Academies
Arts academies offer a myriad of programs designed to expose students to the fine and performing
arts. The arts are a cornerstone to a well-rounded education, and arts academies offer students
the opportunity to recognize and embrace the connections between the creation of art and the
preservation of history and tradition within society. Arts academy programs allow students to
focus on a particular aspect of the arts as well as hone and refine individual skills and talents.
Fine arts programs include visual arts (painting, drawing, photography) and communicative arts
(telecommunications, commercial or graphic design, computer animation). Performing arts include
band, orchestra, choir, guitar, mariachi, dance, and theatre.
Arts academies offer the ultimate experience in hands-on
learning activities including creation, rehearsal, performance,
critique, collaboration, and analysis.
Elementary Arts Academies provide enriched
experiences in music, movement, visual arts, drama, and
communications to develop the whole child. The arts are
integrated across all areas of the elementary curriculum to
enhance students’ understanding of the world around them
and broaden their experiences beyond those of a traditional
classroom. The arts are infused into the core subjects, relating art to math, language, history,
and science, giving students the creativity to express themselves, while challenging their intellect.
In specialized arts classes, students have the opportunity to create, rehearse, and perform for an
audience.
Middle School Arts Academies provide an integrated curriculum as well as the opportunity to
focus on an area of concentration within the arts. Arts and technology are infused into the core
subjects and students receive specialized instruction in their chosen area of study within the arts.
Students’ talents and hard work are showcased through performances and demonstrations both
on campus and throughout the community.
High School Arts Academies allow students the opportunity to refine and develop their skills
in a chosen medium. Students choose a specialty area in either visual or performing arts and
receive intense, often individualized instruction in their chosen specialty as well as regularly create
and perform at a high level. Artist-in Residence and Internship programs provide opportunities to
connect school and community or professional level arts experiences.

Career and Technical Education
Career and Technical Education, or CTE, provides cutting edge programs allowing students to
explore the many career options available after high school graduation. The focus of CTE is to
ensure that all students have access to rigorous, blended college-preparatory and career-oriented
programs that lead to marketable skills for the 21st Century. CTE programs offer high tech training
with state-of-the-art equipment, college credit for all qualifying programs, job shadowing and
internships, and industry certification. CTE is broadly organized in the six program areas:
• Agriculture and Natural Resources
• Business and Marketing Education
• Family and Consumer Sciences
• Health Science and Public Safety
• Information and Media Technologies
• Skilled and Technical Sciences
Each area includes a multitude of specific programs aligned by career cluster and to one or more
career pathways. All CTE programs follow a specific course sequence designed to teach the
skills required by each industry through applied learning methodology and work-based learning
experiences that prepare students for careers in high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand fields.
Leadership and employability skills are an integral part of CTE curriculum. Students enrolled
in a CTE program experience a rigorous program of study which includes sufficient technical
challenge to meet state and/or industry standards. Strong collaborations exist between CTE
schools and postsecondary institutions, businesses, and industry partners to ensure that CTE
programs are aligned with both college and career readiness standards and the needs of
employers, industry, and labor. CTE provides students with work-based learning opportunities
that enable them to connect what they are learning to real-life career scenarios and choices. The
practical learning experiences that are provided in CTE programs appeal to many students, and
certain common elements—the focus on critical thinking, new technologies, real-world settings,
hands-on activities, and the application of learning to practical problems—are skills that are relevant
to all academic subject areas and can be applied in educational, career, and civic contexts
throughout a student’s life.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate (IB) features four unique programs for students
aged 3-19. With over 5400 IB Programs in more than 4000 schools around the world, IB is
internationally recognized for its excellence. The aim of IB is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable
and caring young people with adaptable skills to tackle society’s complex challenges and who will
help to make it a better, more peaceful world. IB programs emphasize teaching students how to
learn and to value learning as an essential, integral part of their everyday lives. The IB program
promotes the development of schools that:
• inspire students to ask questions, pursue personal aspirations, set challenging goals, and
develop the persistence to achieve those goals
• develop knowledgeable students who make reasoned ethical judgments and acquire the
flexibility, perseverance, and confidence they need in order to bring about meaningful change
• encourage healthy relationships, individual and shared responsibility, and effective teamwork
The IB’s Four Programmes
Primary Years Programme (PYP): In the PYP, the IB’s youngest students learn about and use
knowledge, concepts and skills from a variety of subjects to explore 6 transdisciplinary themes and
begin to develop the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. The PYP
is for students in grades 1 - 5.
Middle Years Programme (MYP): The MYP is a challenging
framework that encourages students to make practical
connections between their studies and the real world and
culminates in a personal project. The MYP is for students in
grades 6-10. In the final two years of high school, students can
choose to enter the Diploma Programme or the Career-Related
Programme (CP).
Diploma Programme (DP): The DP is a curriculum that emphasizes both breadth and depth
of knowledge. The DP is made up of 6 subject areas (English, World Language, Individuals
and Society, Sciences, Mathematics, & the Arts) and a core. The DP core includes Theory of
Knowledge (TOK), an individual research project called the Extended Essay (EE) and a series of
Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) projects.
Career-Related Programme (CP): The CP combines two DP courses with school-based,
career-related study. It equips students to pursue further education or to enter their chosen
career path immediately.

STEM/STEAM
STEM/STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics.
STEM/STEAM skills are a vital part of a 21st century education, interweaving engineering,
science, technology, mathematics, and the arts across the curriculum through project-based,
hands-on learning activities. STEM/STEAM academies are cutting edge programs that address
students’ interests while incorporating the national standards in math, science, and technology.
Through the use of iPads, laptops, and computer labs, technology is infused into the curriculum
and used as a tool to foster creativity, collaboration, and communication among students.
STEM/STEAM education differs from the traditional science and math education through the
use of a blended learning environment which allows students to experience how the scientific
method can be applied to everyday life. STEM/STEAM students are innovators and critical
thinkers who are able to make meaningful connections between school, community, work and
global issues. A STEM/STEAM program high school graduate can enroll in a college-level
course of study in science, technology, engineering, and math without the need for remediation.
There is solid evidence to suggest that employees in all fields will need to utilize STEM/STEAM
skills for problem solving in a wide range of industries.
Elementary School level STEM/STEAM education uses inquiry-based and real world
problem-based learning approaches to pique students’ interest in the STEM/STEAM subjects.
Hands-on learning and problem solving using the scientific method are incorporated across all
areas of the curriculum.
Middle School level STEM/STEAM courses become more rigorous and challenging. Students
explore STEM/STEAM related careers, fields, and occupations, as well as the academic
requirements of such fields.
High School level STEM/STEAM programs of study focus on the application of the subjects
in a challenging and rigorous manner. More emphasis is placed on bridging in-school and
out-of-school STEM/STEAM opportunities, including experiences in STEM/STEAM fields and
occupations, as well as preparation for post-secondary education and employment.
“STEM/STEAM academies are cutting edge
programs that address students’ interests
while incorporating the national standards
in math, science, and technology.”
