Required:

The Book Thief -- Markus Zusak
Read both of the books above. For both works, record a double entry journal for each chapter/section.
Label each new chapter/section. On the left side of the notebook page, summarize what is happening in
the text or record important quotes. On the right side of page, record your reactions (what you are
thinking, opinions you are forming, questions you are wondering, and/or situations you can connect
to). These journals will be the basis of classroom discussion, a test, and a project.

Three Cups of Tea – Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin
Keep a journal on 1984. This journal should be a record of your thoughts and feelings as you read the
literary work. Be sure to write your reactions as soon as you read. As part of your response, identify
important quotations and develop thoughtful questions. Avoid simple plot summary; instead interact with
the reading and your ideas. You may hand write your journal or word-process it. When you return to
school, you will be asked to write an insightful paper on the required work, so you might want to begin
thinking about possible topics and approaches as you read.

Biography of a Face – Lucy Grealy
Keep a journal for Biography of a Face. In it, record setting (time and place) and major characters and a
brief description of each. State what you feel is the author’s purpose (reason for writing) and tone
(author’s attitude). For each chapter identify important quotes and develop thoughtful questions as your
record your reaction to the author’s story. AVOID GIVING A PLOT SUMMARY. You may hand write your
journal or word-process it. When you return to school, you will be asked to write an insightful paper on the
required work, so you might want to begin thinking about possible topics and approaches as you read.

Sycamore Row – John Gresham
Honors U.S. History and U.S. History students will be reading Sycamore Row, a legal mystery by John
Gresham which revolves around the legacy of the Jim Crow South. This book is available at the library, at
local bookstores, or online (used or new is fine). Students will answer a short, graded questionnaire on the
book during the first week of school.
AP U.S. HISTORY
Students will be reading the first four chapters of their A.P. Textbook (Out of Many) and completing four
guided chapter note packets. Instructions for picking up the book for summer use will be given before the
last day of classes. Instructions for the Guided Note Packets will be e-mailed to all students enrolled in the
course. The packets will be due on the first day of class in September.

every one of you is up to the task. However, I would like you to read and watch the following materials
during the summer. This will allow us to begin on the first day of class with some common language and
conceptual understanding of our political and economic systems.

familiar with them. Additionally, you could begin reading John Locke's Two Treatises of Government
which you can get for free at your local library or free online from The Project Gutenberg - EBook of

For the Macroeconomics course I want you to read Condensed Wealth of Nations, on SHA's website,
and watch a 15-minute video from the Institute of Economic Affairs, which is available at
