-- BAYARD --
The family groups represented in this collection may not be complete, because information was entered bit by bit as I found it
or happened upon it; I have not done any systematic research on these families. Because they do not compose whole family
genealogies, these listings are arranged differently from most genealogical records or histories. Each listing is a family group,
and is arranged and filed alphabetically under the name of the head of the family.
Names are generally in alphabetical order (disregarding spelling variations and middle names), then in approx. chronological
order. The first sorting is by surname (mixing together any and all spelling variations), then by given name, then by approximate birthdate (when known) in approximate chronological order. For easier reference, surnames in headings are grouped together under the most common spelling usage that evolved in this geographical location, regardless of individualistic
spellings in the records themselves. Cross references are used in most cases where surname spellings substantially vary.
Within the quoted records, the individual spellings have been (mostly) retained because they sometimes provide clues (although in general—but with exceptions—they seem to largely reflect the record keeper's particular orthography and not always, at this early period, any special family preference). Those interested can see the variety and evolvement of a particular
name’s spelling and the interesting and sometimes amusing attempts at phonetic reproduction. Keep in mind that before
names and spellings were standardized, records reflected the individualistic whim of the particular recorder (often two different spellings of the same name within the same document). In addition, all records were handwritten, and sometimes deciphering a handwritten name in early records can be quite challenging! So expect to search under all possibilities of spelling
(for both surnames and given names).
Given names are grouped together without regard for middle initials or middle names. Because middle names and/or initials
are sometimes used, sometimes not used in various records, it seemed simplest to arrange entries as if the middle names or
initials did not exist. Usually all variations of a given name are grouped together as though spelled one way: Jan, Johannes,
John, etc. are all grouped as one (but also look under the other forms).
Sources and references are included with each "family" grouping, but may or may not include sources that are cited (or are
obvious, such as baptismal records, etc.) within the narrative or listing itself.
As with any compiled genealogical record, researchers should regard this information as leads and clues, and should verify
all data with independent research.
I welcome, and would be grateful for, any additions or corrections, especially with source citations.

Barent L. V. Beverhardt, Joshua Duley, Whitehead Hicks. Proved, December 30, 1765. Sir Henry Moore, Baronet, CaptainGeneral and Governor-in-Chief of the Province of New York, To all, etc. Know ye that on the 30 day of December, 1765, before Goldsbrow Banyer the will of Nicholas Bayard was proved.
[NOTE.--Nicholas Bayard was the owner of the greater part of the "Bayard Farm," which forms so important a part of the
lower part of the city of New York. It lay on both sides of Broadway, the eastern part being the "Bowery" mentioned in the
will. Elizabeth street, Hester street, and Ann street (now Grand street) were named after the daughters. Nicholas Bayard was
son of Samuel Bayard and Margaret Van Cortlandt, and was baptized August 28, 1698. He married, 1st, Elizabeth Rynders,
daughter of Barent and Hester Rynders, and granddaughter of the famous Jacob Leisler. The children by this marriage were
Judith, Hester, and Nicholas, baptized June 13, 1733. He married, 2d, Margaretta Van Beverhout, and had children Elizabeth,
Ann, and Stephen, baptized July 16, 1760. The "New York Gazette" contained the following notice: "On Thursday last (November 21, 1765), after a short Indisposition, died, at his Seat in the Bowery, Nicholas Bayard, Esq., for many years an
eminent Merchant of this City. His Funeral was attended on Saturday by a great number of Gentlemen, his Acquaintances,
Relatives, Friends, Tenants, and Domestics, and his Remains deposited in the Family Vault. His Loss is most regretted by
those who knew him most." His son, Nicholas Bayard, had five daughters, Mary, wife of William Houston (after whom
Houston street was named. He died March 13, 1813, and his wife died before, August 7, 1806). Catharine, wife of
Robert C. Johnson, Eliza, wife of John H. Mackintosh, Ann L., wife of Nicholas S. Bayard, and Margaret, wife of
Gerard Rutgers. The two houses and lots on the south side of Wall street are now Nos. 37-43 Wall street. They were 62 feet
wide. In 1772 Nicholas Bayard sold them to Philip Livingston and others, as assignees, for £3,000. They were described as
bounded east by Cornelius Sebring, south by the Old Dutch Churchyard, and west by John Crooke. These lots in 1797 were
bought by William Jauncey, and remained in his family till recent years. In 1835 these lots were Nos. 20-22 Wall street.--W. S. P.]
In her will, she wrote: ...I, Margaritie Bayard, wife of Nicholas Bayard, of New York, merchant, do make this my will."
"Whereas the above named Nicholas Bayard and Margaritie Bayard (then Margaritie Beverhout), on the 2d of December,
1755, being before agreed to enter the holy estate of marriage, the same was accordingly solemnized, but previous thereto,
they, the said Nicholas Bayard and Peter Winne, of Albany, and the said Margaritie Beverhout, widow, of New York, by certain Articles of agreement, bearing the same date, it was agreed that if the intended marriage should take effect, it was agreed
that Nicholas Bayard should be entitled to all of her real and personal estate, and the same was conveyed to Peter Winne, by
Deed of Lease and Release. And it was further agreed that the said Margaritie should have full power to make her will, and to
give to her children £2,400, being part of her personal estate, which he, the said Nicholas, agreed to confirm, by paying that
sum, and did bind himself in the sum of £4,800." I therefore leave the said £2,400 as follows: To my son,
Barent Langemaght Van Beverhout, £800, when of age; to my daughters, Mary Beverhout and Margaret Beverhout, £800
each, when of age. I make my sons-in-law (step sons), Claudian and Johanes Van Beverhout, "who are half brothers to my
said children," and my good friend, Johanes Pannele, of New York, merchant, executors. Dated, May 26, 1758. Witnesses,
John Stout, Philip Ver Planck, Jr., Simon Johnson. Proved, October 29, 1770. The executors being out of the Province, Letters of Administration are granted to Anne Burke, of New York, spinster. Confirmed by Gov. Dunmore, October 29, 1770.

Peter Bayard was a nephew of Peter Stuyvesant.
Petrus Bayard became a convert to the doctrines of the Labadists, and moved to their colony in MD and was
prominent there. In his old age, he withdrew from the community and returned to NYC. His wife was well versed in the
Indian tongue, and was frequently an interpreter. She lived on the north side of Exchange Place, a little east of Broadway in
New York City. On Aug 10, 1700, she obtained a large tract (5 tracts, bought from the Indians) of land in what is now
Rockland County, near the Gore Line, in the present town of Ramapo. She improved the land and settled there. Upon her
death, it was passed to her children, Petrus and Sarah. A patent was never obtained for the land.
Blandina Kierstede, h. v. Pieter Bayard, was listed in the 1686 Dominie Selyns list of members of the NYC Ref Ch. She
was living on Broadway. Listed before her were: ...Isaac Stephenszen, en syn h. Margareta van Veen; Lucas Andrieszen, en
syn h. Aefje Laurence; Balthazar Bayard, en syn huysv. Marritje Loockermans; Mr. Gerrit van Tricht, en syn h.
Maria van der Grift. Listed after her were: Rachel Kierstede; Jan Peeck en syn huysv. Lysbeth van Imburg;
Gysbert van Imburg.; Tryntie Adolphus, h. v. Thomas Hooker; etc.3
As a widow, after receiving an Indian deed on 10 August 1700, Blandina (Kiersted) Bayard established an Indian trading
post in Mahwah, Bergen Co., NJ, later run by her dau-in-law Rachel Bayard and her nephew Lucas Kiersted. The land
deeded to her was considered at that time to be in New York state, and measured about 12 miles by 16 miles. It included
Mahwah, Oakland, and Campgaw and parts of New York State.
In her will, dated 25 Sep 1702, probated 16 April 1711, Blandina Bayard of the city of New York, widow, mentioned late
husband Petrus Bayard; eldest son Samuel Bayard; dau. Sarah; son Petrus Bayard. She appointed son Petrus Bayard, her

Jacob Bloom. Petrus Bayard and Lewis Kierstede both being dead without having proved the will, Letters of Administration
were granted to Rachel, widow of Petrus Bayard, and to Abraham Goesbeck who married Sarah Bayard, daughter of
Blandina Bayard. The will abstract: I, Blandina Bayard, of the city of New York, widow. I leave to my eldest son,
Samuel Bayard, £25. To my daughter Sarah all my wearing apparell of woollen and linen, and one of my beds and furniture
and £12 in money to make her a silver tankard when she is of age or married. Whereas by a certain deed of Partition, made on
the 13 day of June, 1699, between my eldest son, Samuel Bayard, and his heirs and assigns and myself, whereby I do in conscience judge before God he has had a sufficient part of the estate of his father, Petrus Bayard, my late husband deceased,
therefore I have thought best to give all my estate, both real and personal, to my dear and well beloved son, Petrus Bayard,
and to my dear and well beloved daughter, Sarah Bayard. I appoint my son Petrus and my brother, Lewis Kierstede, and my

-?Samuel Bayard was a New York merchant who acquired a right to a portion of 100,000-acre tract of land purchased in
1695 from the Indians by Lucas Van Tienhoven and John Cornelius. Because of the tremendous size of the purchase, it was
not confirmed by the Province, and the Indian deed was not recorded. In 1696, Samuel Bayard petitioned the government for
the right to purchase “four Indian fields lying vacant and unappropriated in Orange County, known by the names of
Wieremins, Peskeck, Gomagkie and Narasonk, being part of Luycas Van Tienhoven’s Indian purchase.” Bayard’s petition
was granted and, after Augustine Graham, Surveyor General of the Province had surveyed the 3000 acres in question, a
patent was issued 17 June 1697 to Bayard. This tract was west of the Kakiat Patent.
