Jointing Procedure P8_001 JOINT 11KV POLYMERIC TO POLYMERIC STRAIGHT SINGLE CORE UNARMOURED CABLES (FOR CABLES WITH COPPER WIRE SCREEN) SAC Conductor size mm² Product Reference Comm Code 11kV EJSXU11AUU 366000 95 EJSXU11BUU 366041 185* EJSXU11CUU 366001 300* * THE RANGE OF 366001 & 366041 CAN BE EXTENDED WITH THE FOLLOWING BUILD UP KIT; EJSCX11BK 366002 95 to 300 SHELL RESIN VOLUME = 3.5 LITRES / EACH NOTES Before shrinking one tube onto another or onto polymeric insulation or before applying any mastic, clean and degrease the underlying surfaces. Where any of these surfaces are semi conducting or stress controlling take care not to drag any carbon particles onto any insulating components. Metal sheaths of cables should always be scraped/abraded and degreased before applying any earth bonds or mastics. Plastic cable sheaths should be abraded and degreased for at least 100mm beyond the sheath cut as this area forms the primary water seal. The reliability of the jointing system relies on cleanliness and dimensional accuracy, always check the stripping dimensions and keep the joint assembly as clean as possible. NB: the joint bodies are designed for symmetrical application either side of the centre line of the connector. P8_001.doc Issue 4 06/03/2104 JPS © 2014 Electricity North West Limited. CP411-2 Page 1 of 8 Jointing Procedure P8_001 1. PREPARATION 1.1 Clean the cables throughout the length to be jointed, and additional length for parking of accessories. 1.2 Identify any phasing requirements and mark as appropriate. 1.3 A minimum distance of 300mm is recommended between the cable and joint bay base. 2. SETTING OF CABLES 2.1 Bend and set the cable to the position that it will occupy on completion of the joint. 2.2 Mark the datum line and cut the cables to length, ensuring a minimum overlap as specified. 2.3 Remove the plastic protection sleeve from the body and tape to the cable on the side furthermost from the joint centre line. 3. PREPARATION OF CABLE 3.1 Overlap cables as shown in Fig 1. 3.2 Remove the outer sheath to the dimensions shown in Fig 1. 3.3 Abrade the outer sheath for a distance of 100mm. 3.4 Remove any swell and equalising tapes at the sheath cut position. 3.5 Form the screen wires back along the cable sheath and apply PVC tape at the ends of the screen wires as a temporary binder. 3.6 Remove the semi-conductive core screen to a dimension 40mm from the cable sheath. 3.7 Cut the core to length, taking into account the connector block. 3.8 Remove the insulation to the depth of the connector bore. 3.9 Degrease the prepared cable, wiping from the insulation onto the semi-conductive screen and discard. MAKE CONNECTION 4.1 Install the connector using the sequence shown, ensuring that the joint body is parked, as per Fig 2. 4.2 Degrease the connector and insulation. 4.3 Apply grease as shown in figure 2. 5. INSTALLATION OF JOINT ASSEMBLY. 5.1 Mark the semi-conductive screen using a chinagraph pencil, 25mm from the screen cut, shown in Fig 2. 5.2 Slide the joint body over the connector so that the end of the joint body aligns with the 25mm mark on the semi-conductive core screen. 5.3 Shrink the first 10mm of one side of the joint assembly, by pulling the removable cord and winding it around the cable in the direction indicated on the joint body. 5.4 Check the 25mm dimension on the semi-conductive screen and adjust as necessary. 5.5 Fully remove the cord. CONNECTION OF EARTH WIRES 6.1 Form screen wires into one bunch and secure in tunnel connector. P8_001.doc Issue 4 06/03/2104 JPS © 2014 Electricity North West Limited. CP411-2 Page 5 of 8 Jointing Procedure P8_001 7. APPLICATION OF KNIT MESH TAPE. 7.1 Over-tape complete joint from sheath cut to sheath cut with Knit Mesh Tape, applied with a 20% overlap and tie off. 8. FITTING OF RESIN SHELL 8.1 Trim the cable entry point of the shell to suit the size of the cable. 8.2 Degrease the abraded outer sheath. 8.3 Fit the shell, ensuring a minimum of 10 mm clearance. 6.4 Secure using Velcro strip and metal clips. Seal both ends with putty. 8.5 Mix the resin in accordance with the instruction provided with the resin and pour into the case until full. 8.6 Fit the lids over the filling port. 8.7 Allow resin to set before moving or back-filling. APPLICATION OF BUILD UP TUBE 9.1 Cut the build up tube to length. 9.2 Apply a layer of GC30 grease over the prepared core. 9.3 Apply a small amount of GC30 grease to the inside leading edge of the build up tube. 9.4 Push the tube over the insulation and position the tube 5mm away from the screen cut, ensuring the opposite end latches over the insulation by 2mm. 9.5 Fill the gap between build up tube and the cable core screen with grease. 9.6 Using the brass connector sleeves from the build up kit, make the conductor connection ensuring that the joint body is parked over the polymeric cable. 9.7 Degrease the connector and insulation.
