My first 4th Grade Social Studies Assignment -‐ Landform Picture and Description Search the Internet for a specific landform. For example, a bay is a kind of landform, but The Bay of Fundy is a specific landform, and I want a specific landform with a name that uniquely and specifically identifies it. Here are your very specific directions for this assignment: * This is to be done on a HALF-‐SHEET of paper (ie: 4.25 inches by 11”). I want to post about 40 of these on my bulletin board so that’s why I want this on only a half sheet of paper – so there will be room for everyone’s work. * Write the specific name of your landform as the title of your assignment (example: The Bay of Fundy) * Put your name and date below your title. Skip a line and enter your name and the date you began or completed this assignment – either date is fine. Name goes on far left, date goes on far right as in example below. * Next give 3 sentences that describe your landform. The first sentence must identify, as specifically as possible, where the landform is located. The other two sentences are your choice but should not state the obvious. For example, telling me that the Bay of Fundy is a bay does not provide any information that I haven’t figured out from its name. Provide interesting information that I might not know about your landform. * DO NOT COPY the information word for word from your source of information. You are to explain what you learned from your research in your OWN WORDS. If you do not understand the information from your source, select a different source or a different landform. How your assignment will be graded: Point Values: Important: the assignment will not be accepted unless: * It is on a half sheet of paper * There is a photo * Title includes specific name of landmark * Student name and date are present Assignments turned in without the above elements will be given back to the student and considered LATE with points taken off in accordance with school policy. * Using a half sheet – 5 points * Name of specific landmark – 5 points * Student name – 3 points * Date of Assignment – 3 points * Proper header like example – 4 points -‐centered title, skipped line, name on far left, date on far right, skipped line, then description of landform. * First sentence tells location of landform – 10 points * Next two sentences give interesting information – 15 points each / max 30 Total: 60 points Important: Anyone doing the Bay of Fundy will have 18 points deducted since I will have done all of your research for you, resulting in no more than an equivalent maximum grade of 70% for this project. And if you use the same information as I did (or the same photo), your grade will be a ZERO. Extra credit points may be awarded for exceptional work. The following page is an example of your finished assignment, one that would earn extra credit. The Bay of Fundy Joe Student 9/1/2015 The Bay of Fundy is about 170 miles wide that is located between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia along Canada’s eastern coastline. This is an unusual bay because 160 billion tons of water flow in and out of the bay during only one tide cycle, causing extreme low and high tides. Boats that float on the bay at high tide can be seen aground resting on the sandy floor of the bay at low tide. Tourists can enjoy lobster, mussels, scallops, and salmon from the bay. Low Tide High Tide Help for this assignment: You can find different kinds of landforms in your social studies textbook on pages 11-‐15 and pages R16-‐R17. From here, simply select a landform on which you’d like to do a quick research. Since bays are a kind of landform, you might start a Google search on “Famous Bays”. From there you might select a bay, see example below: The following is a Google search on the Bay of Fundy: Once you identify the specific landform for your assignment, look over some of the information sources provided. Here’s an example of one I located for the Bay of Fundy. Please notice that I am NOT going to copy any information word for word from any source. I may need to check a few sources to get some information, or I might be able to tell about the landmark from one single source of information, but I WILL NOT COPY any sentences word for word. See this source as an example of a very good write up: http://bayoffundytourism.com Here is a video on Youtube showing the dramatic difference in the tide. If you are going to show a landmark that is famous for something, find a photo that illustrates its unusual nature. The Bay of Fundy’s claim to fame is its extreme tidal differences, so I selected a photo that shows both high and low tide in my example. I used Google’s Search Images to find a vast selection of photos. I started with “Bay of Fundy” but did not see photos showing the difference between high and low tide, so then I changed my search to “bay of fundy high and low tide” and found so many photos I could have used; it was hard to choose! Check out the many photos shown in the following example.
