rmhctoledo.org © Copyright 2016 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio ANNUAL REPORT 2015 RECAP Growing and thriving: Those are our favorite words to hear whenever past guests at Ronald McDonald House® update us on their children’s statuses. What could be more rewarding than helping a family endure the unimaginable stress that comes with having a seriously ill child, and then learning that the child is now healthy? Your involvement in our mission helps anxious families eager for those kinds of happy endings. “Growing and thriving” are also good words for describing Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio. As you’ll read in this report, 2015 was a transitional year for our organization. We replaced our original Ronald McDonald House with a brand new and expanded “home away from home” for families who come to us with heavy hearts. The additional rooms enable us to serve more families in a completely accessible, modern, and home-like atmosphere. To date, supporters of our Hands Build Houses, Hearts Build Homes campaign had donated $8.3 million to construct the new House. We have embarked on raising the remaining $1.8 million to pay off our original building expenses and complete six unfinished guest rooms. Last year, we also witnessed the needs of families with sick or injured children grow in both urgency and difficulty. Children whose families stay at our House are often more seriously ill, travel further distances for treatment, and remain hospitalized longer than other patients. In 2015, our Ronald McDonald House allowed more than 400 families to access the best medical care for their children. We hope you’ll take time to read our 2015 Annual Report and learn about the impact your support for RMHC is making in our community and beyond. All parents deserve to see their children grow and thrive. Because of you, RMHC allows families to focus on what matters most—their children’s health. So while we love hearing “growing and thriving,” we also enjoy saying “thank you” for all that you do. Because better happens when charities share efforts and resources, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio awards financial grants to area nonprofits that focus directly on improving children’s health and well-being. In 2015, we awarded the following grants: Big Brothers/Big Sisters of NWO $1,580 Bowling Green City Schools 2,000 Boy Scouts of America 5,000 iTaalk Autism Foundation 5,000 Kids Unlimited Literacy Program 6,929 United Way of Putnam County TOTAL 10,000 $30,509 Pantry Partners Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio strives to keep families comfortable during their stays with us. By providing a fully stocked kitchen, where they can prepare and enjoy family meals, we eliminate one more burden for parents focusing on caring for their hospitalized children. As part of our Pantry Partners program, we invite local businesses, groups, and organizations to help fill our food cupboards for a month. Here are answers to our most frequently asked Pantry Program questions. How do we know what to collect? Shortly before your group’s collection month, we’ll send you a list of the top ten items we need. Gather all the items on your list and deliver them to the Ronald McDonald House before the month ends. Can we drop off items early? Absolutely. Feel free to drop off pantry items throughout the month if that’s more convenient for you—or if you’ve collected items with shorter shelf lives. How much food do you need? We host up to twenty-two families every night, so the need is great. There’s ample storage space in the House, and we’re happy to accept whatever you collect. Are there any item restrictions? We’re unable to use food items that are beyond their listed expiration dates. We ask that you collect everything on your list as a minimum, but you’re certainly welcome to provide additional items if you wish. How should our group collect items? We hope you’ll have fun while helping Ronald McDonald House. Some Pantry Partners create competitions among departments or offer incentives for collecting the most food—so get creative. We’ll recognize your group on our website and on our Facebook page, so please send us your pictures. For more information, contact Lisa Zoltowski at [email protected] or 419-471-4663, extension 6113. Several published peer-reviewed studies (eleven, to date) illustrate the important part Ronald McDonald House plays in family-centered care. Here are a few key findings: Ronald McDonald House allows parents to spend more time with their hospitalized children, to interact more closely with their medical providers, and to participate in important healthcare decisions. Studies show that RMHC: • Bolsters a family’s psychological wellbeing by keeping members close together, and by supporting them with emotional and physical comfort • Improves the hospital experience for children and their families • Enhances a family’s coping abilities, as well as a child’s recovery and outcomes • Helps alleviate the financial stress associated with accommodation expenses • Provides parents with better sleep quality than napping at their child’s bedside does—helping to ensure them the rest they need to make critical decisions about their children’s care Over 92 percent of hospital leaders agree that RMHC reduces stress and financial burdens for families with sick children. RED SHOE SOCIETY The Red Shoe Society is a group of community-minded professionals working to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio. Through various networking and social activities, Society members act as advocates to spread the RMHC message, discover fun and creative ways to volunteer for the House, and show young people the importance of giving back to their community. If you’re interested in joining the Red Shoe Society... visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/redshoeofnorthwestohio and complete the membership form, or email [email protected]. Annual individual memberships: $25 ($15 for students) Corporate multiple-person memberships: $250 FORE! THE HOUSE Ronald McDonald House supporters hit the links on August 8 for the annual FORE! THE HOUSE golf scramble. Thirty-six foursomes competed for fun and prizes at The Legacy by Arthur Hills golf course while raising over $57,000. Thanks to the generosity of area McDonald’s Owner/Operators, 100 percent of the day’s proceeds directly benefitted the children and families using Ronald McDonald House. Congratulations to Matthew Gilliland for having a hole-in-one, which earned him a $500 prize. Saving aluminum can pull-tabs is a great way to support Ronald McDonald House while helping the environment. Drop off your collected pull-tabs to our House, and we’ll recycle them for cash to help fund our mission. Set aside your tabs at home, at school, and at work, because better happens when communities pull together. Providing a “home away from home” to families with hospitalized children requires many helping hands. Ronald McDonald House® volunteers support our guests by cooking, cleaning, listening, and understanding. Because better happens when community members share their time and talent, we invite you to lend a hand at our house. Nothing compares to a home-cooked meal. That’s why families staying at Ronald McDonald House receive home-cooked meals lovingly prepared by volunteers. Our Dinner on the House program puts you or your group to work in our kitchen, cooking and baking for hungry guests. Better happens when bellies—and hearts—are full. 2016 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Vicky Brymer – Board Chair Tim Effler – Vice Chair Chad Bringman – President Mary Ann Michel – Treasurer Mike Bodman – Assistant Treasurer Mary Knake – Secretary Melissa Andrews Amanda Backus Robert Davis Beth Eckel Suzanne Gagle Robert Gardner Tamy Goodrum Tony Heldreth Joan Hennessy Matt Homier Royce Kohman Steve Leamy Ann Meier Lindsey Milam Jack Pasienza Arturo Polizzi Marna Ramnath Mark Simon Russ Zimmerman Executive Director Portia Garza Event & Volunteer Coordinator Steve Sickmiller Kim Bartlett Julie Kurtz Lisa Zoltowski STAFF Chad Bringman Development Coordinator Executive Assistant Accountant Operations Coordinator PART-TIME FAMILY SERVICES MANAGERS Katie Austin Kathleen Brassil Carol Bublick Diana Chatman Marci Ellis Tammy Hubbard Kim Kennedy Lisa Keyes Carol LaCourse Ann Niles Pearl Patterson Rosi Picott Nancy Puszczewicz Taylor Walton Cheryl Williams On December 9, 2015, exactly thirty-three years to the day that the original Toledo Ronald McDonald House opened, we cut the ribbon on our brand new home.
