Mrs Bouweraerts Phase 6 Phonic Group Homework 09.01.13 WALT: How to spell words ending in ‘ly’ and being able to spell the common words. WILF: I know the rules for adding the suffix ‘ly’ to a word and can change the root word to fit the rule. This week’s common words to learn are: LOOK The ‘Tricky Bit’ Underline any bits you will find hard to remember- how could you remember it? Write the word and cover it up Write the word from memory Check and write again gone please ever miss suddenly This week’s spelling rule is adding the suffix ‘ly’ to a word. We often make an adverb by adding -ly to an adjective, for example: quick quickly. Most of the time you just add ‘ly’! e.g. loud - loudly beautiful – beautifully However………. If the adjective ends in: do this: and add: consonant + -le remove the final -e -y l do nothing y -y (except 1-syllable adjectives) remove the -y -ily Note: The odd ones out! These irregular words DO NOT fit any rules! day > daily gay > gaily For example: terrible - terribly Happy-happily Mrs Bouweraerts Phase 6 Phonic Group Homework 09.01.13 Please place the words next to the correct rule and write them out with the suffix added Example: kind- kindly friend proper real slow grumpy wrinkle safe love like especial beautiful curl sparkle chill Just add ‘ly’ e.g. kindly Take off the final ‘e’ and add ‘y’ Just add ‘y’ Take off the ‘y’ and add ‘ily’ Note to parents: The children will be tested on the common words. They should know these words by next week. I will then give the children some easy ‘ly’ words and ask them to write them under the correct headings.
