The Chengdu Panda Base

The Giant Panda is a popular animal. With its black and white fur, it is easy to
recognise. However, the panda has only ever lived in the wild in China. Today it is
only found in some mountain areas of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. 80% of
the world’s pandas live in Sichuan. In Chinese culture, the panda is a symbol of
good fortune. However, there are now only about 1,600 pandas left in the wild and
the Chinese government want to protect them. In 1987, they opened a special zoo
called The Chengdu Panda Base. It started with six pandas which were rescued
from the mountains.

At Chengdu many baby pandas are born. A new-born cub weighs 100 grams and is
pink. After two weeks the skin turns grey and after a month it gets soft black and
white fur. In 2013, 17 panda cubs were born at Chengdu. After a few years they
will be set free.

Unfortunately, many forests where pandas live have been cut down for fruit farms.
This is a problem for the pandas’ food. In the wild pandas sometimes also eat eggs,
fruit and birds but 99% of their food is bamboo. This means that Chengdu needs a
lot of workers to collect bamboo. It is expensive to pay these workers but it is
necessary, as they need to find food for 100 pandas at Chengdu Base.
For full marks in questions 1–3 please answer in complete sentences.
How many pandas live in the mountain areas of China?
2.
When did the Chengdu Panda Base open?
3.
How many pandas were born at Chengdu in 2013?
