Summer 2012, Issue 23, No. 1
Greetings,
A few years ago, I was standing in line, holding my youngest
daughter, Rebecca, in the Piggly Wiggly grocery store (a
grocery store chain in the South) when I felt a tap on my
shoulder. As I turned around an older lady stood there
smiling broadly with the two teeth in her mouth. She looked
up at me and said, “Ain’t no denying that youngen; she looks jest
like you!”
I smiled and replied, “She does, doesn’t she?” I felt the pride
any parent feels as I delighted in finding similarities between
my daughter and myself.
Our school slogan for the 2011–2012 school year here at
the Academy has been: “It’s All About Jesus.” This is both a
powerful and prodigious slogan, as we’ve worked very hard
to make this academic year all about Jesus. Assuredly, we
have consistently kept this slogan at the forefront of all that
we’ve done and intended to do. Prayerfully, we have truly
attempted to support all students along in their journey at
AA. In the area of academics, spiritual growth and service,
I can confidently say that this year has been all about Jesus.

As I have pondered this slogan and write this message
to you, I wonder if your experience here was “All about
Jesus?” Did you see Jesus in your teachers, your principal,
in the academia, or even in the “fun” things in which you
participated? I hope so! I hope that you saw, became more
acquainted with, and even met this Man whom we call our
Savior, Jesus Christ. As a Seventh-day Adventist Christian
high school, at Andrews Academy we feel it is imperative
that everyone reflect the image of Jesus Christ. I pray that
you had this experience here and that our students will look
back as alumni and know that they certainly did.

Envisioning the Future
Anytime one thinks of goals the words conceivable, achievable, believable and even measurable come to mind. What is really
the purpose of setting goals anyway? Goals are ideas, dreams, ambitions and accomplishments that a person or institution
is constantly striving to reach. Some goals are for the near future and some are what are known as long-term goals. The
purpose of goal-setting is to set a standard for your institution by which to measure effectiveness and success. Goals should
breed ambition and drive individuals and institutions to excellence.
When I think of goals and their importance to Andrews Academy, I begin to almost salivate at “what could happen” if we set
goals as described above—goals that involve dreams and ambitions of what Andrews Academy could be and where we could
go. In my opinion, it is a given that we have not reached excellence because excellence is a journey that always continues.
You continue to work towards excellence, and as you work towards those goals you set forth, excellence will follow, but
new light will be shed on other areas or ways to become better.
Some of our current goals here at AA are as follows:
1. We desire to enhance our delivery of teaching by actively incorporating technology. All AA teachers will begin the
journey of utilizing iPads as instructional tools.
2. With the formation of the new governance of AA, the AA Council, board, administration and faculty hope to begin
the journey of designing and implementing the Andrews Academy strategic plan as we embark on our journey of
excellence.
3. The facilities at Andrews Academy are in great need of upgrades. We have taken steps to improve the grounds (new
bed of rocks and shrubbery as well as upgrading the AA courtyard) on campus. We are currently upgrading the
plumbing fixtures in all restrooms with the hope that new paint, stalls and flooring will be in place before the start of
the next school year. Plans are also underway for redesigning the Commons area.
Goodbye, Mrs. Banks
Andrews Academy recently bid adieu to Home Economics teacher Patty Banks,
who retired to California with her husband, John, in December 2011. Mrs. Banks
began her work for AU schools in 1988 when she joined the staff at Ruth Murdoch
Elementary School as a fifth-grade teacher, and in 2003 she made the transition to
the Academy where she taught a variety of courses including Basic Foods and Basic
Clothing as well as Health and some P.E. classes, and served as an S.A. sponsor. A
favorite with students, Mrs. Banks was well known for her love of hymn singing and
could always be counted on to enthusiastically lead students in rousing choruses from the front of the chapel. She was also
known for her rather vociferous pronouncements on a series of topics, most notably Michigan sports teams, of which she was
an ardent fan (go Red Wings)! Students appreciated her down-to-earth personality and her infectious sense of humor—“she
was a great friend to her students,” recalls senior Camille Nixon. “Whenever you needed her help, she was ready to lend a
hand.” Nixon’s classmate Jeremy Faehner concurs, adding, “What I truly appreciated about Mrs. B was her lively, thoughtful
spirit. She never failed to discuss real topics in class and she helped me to see life in a different way. The school misses her
lovely voice filling the hallways!” Indeed, Mrs. Banks’ “lovely voice” is just one of many things we will miss about a dear teacher
and colleague. It is with sincere gratitude that we wish her much happiness (and many new sewing projects!) in her new home.

Farewell, Mr. Baker
PHOTO CAPTIONS : (top to bottom) Mr. Baker, during
his early years of teaching, 2012 Reformation Tour, Mr.
Baker with the cast of one of his famous school plays.
4
As Mr. Baker strides up to the chapel podium, there is an expectant
buzz in the crowd. Whispering voices hush and students watch
intently as Baker clears his throat and characteristically swings the
microphone away from him so that he is forced to project his voice.
No one knows exactly what the topic is going to be, but there is a
feeling it is something different. Something in the air suggests that
Baker has a new message to deliver to the students of Andrews
Academy—a final message.
He begins by asking the student body a question: “If you could
have anything in the world, what would it be? Would it be a bright red
sports car, or something more down-to-earth?” And when Baker
directs the question to himself, there is no doubt in any student’s
mind what he would choose: Trains.
Baker begins to tell the story of a trip he took to Colorado
several years ago. He cues a video clip. Blinking red lights, a railroad
crossing, and the shrieking whistle of an oncoming train flash across
the screen and echo through the chapel. As the train thunders
closer, a middle-aged Baker realizes that two locomotives are linked
together. The audience can hear Baker’s voice off-camera as he
whoops, “A doubleheader! All right!” Everyone laughs at the show
of pure delight as a youthful and ecstatic Baker cheers at the sight of
the train, pumps his fists into the air, and smiles from ear to ear.
At the podium, Baker remains serious. He acknowledges that he
likes trains—there’s no surprise there—but there’s something that
he values even more. In his inimitable style, Baker intends to teach
a lesson to the last.
He describes an episode of “The Wonder Years,” a video that
he uses for his AP English class about the process of saying goodbye
and the conflicting feelings that come with it. By now it is evident:
Mr. Baker is giving his goodbye speech, one many never expected
to hear.
He shows a clip from the show in which Kevin Arnold, a junior
high student who feels slighted when his teacher misses a tutoring
session, says accusingly to his teacher, “I thought you were my friend.”
The teacher responds, “Not your friend, Mr. Arnold, your teacher.”
At this, everyone gives a slight chuckle due to the teacher’s apparent
rejection. But Mr. Baker explains that the teacher is eager to mentor
his student, preparing him to be able to do things on his own.
Mr. Baker’s final message is clear, and he leaves no room
for misinterpretation: “I hope, after the many years I have been
teaching here, that I have not been just a friend to you people.
But instead, I hope I have been a good teacher, and in doing so
became your friend.”
“I hope, after the many years I have been
teaching here, that I have not been just a
friend to you people. But instead, I hope I
have been a good teacher, and in doing so
became your friend.”
For 36 years, Mr. Thomas Baker has been a teacher
and a friend to the students and faculty of Andrews
Academy. The scores of students who return to AA years
later to thank him for teaching them how to write or how
to think, testify to the most enduring gift of friendship a
teacher could ever give. He has worked determinedly to
implement a rigorous and effective English curriculum,
maintaining what he calls a “dogged and insane insistence
on writing.” And his insistence on excellence led to the
creation of several unique and challenging courses such as
New and Old Testament Classics, Art of Autobiography,
and Research Composition. Mr. Baker has also sought
opportunities for learning outside of the classroom, forging
strong ties with Seminar Schloss Bogenhofen in Austria and
coordinating several tours to Austria and Germany since
the 80s. Students continue to benefit from the Germanlanguage exchange program.
Closer to home, Mr. Baker has promoted culturally
enriching programs through his literary interpretation
class. Since the first production of Our Town in 1981, Mr.
Baker has built a solid reputation in the community for
directing stellar dramatic productions, including To Kill
a Mockingbird, We Shook the Family Tree, Matchmaker,
and most recently a return to a play he directed over a
decade ago, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. Members of his
cast recall with admiration Baker’s passion for extracting
the subtleties of the text and his knack for helping them
inhabit their roles. Their performances over the years have
entertained and inspired. “Baker was always passionate
and active. There was never a line that he made seem
dull,” said Dillon Zimmerman, who played the role of Stage
Manager in Our Town.
The AA faculty has also benefitted immensely from
Baker’s passion, wisdom and friendship. His leadership and
service on various academic and curriculum committees
has been invaluable, placing the Academy on sound
philosophical and academic footing. In the words of one
student, “Although Baker is leaving Andrews Academy
after this year, there is no doubt that he will never be
forgotten. He will always have a lasting impression on our
school. He will always be respected by both faculty and
students. He will always be a legend.”
There’s a wonderful scene in the film The Emperor’s
Club—incidentally, it’s also a movie Baker was fond of
using in his classes—that captures the ethos of Mr. Baker’s
career. It is a powerful story about a teacher who inspires
his students to be men of character and learning. Near the
film’s conclusion, the teacher, Mr. Hundert, is surrounded
by a group of young men who were his students 25 years
prior. Now, all these years later, with time to reflect
on what their teacher had taught them, the men gather
around their teacher, mentor and friend to present him
with a plaque. The words on the plaque read:
“A great teacher has little external history to record.
His life goes over into other lives. These men are pillars
in the intimate structure of our schools. They are more
essential than its stones or beams, and they will continue
to be a kindling force and a revealing power in our lives.”
Mr. Baker, their sentiment is ours: You are a pillar, and you
will continue to be “a kindling force and a revealing power
in our lives.” Thank you for being our teacher, mentor and
friend.

2011 Alumni Reunion
2011 Honored Classes
1937, 1942, 4947, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007
The 2011 Alumni Weekend was hosted October 14 & 15,
2011. It began with Convocation in the chapel for the current
academy students. Dr. Mary Ann (Kimmel) McNeilus (’62),
shared with the students her experiences as a physician
and medical missionary. The program was enhanced with
participation by both alumni and current students.
Following the Convocation, the annual Career
Seminars featured alumni speakers on topics such as
medical missions, airline maintenance, construction,
nursing, chemistry, computers, engineering, social work,
homemaking, art, graphic design, animal science, venture
capitalism and more. Students were given the opportunity
to attend any two of the topics presented.
Friday evening began with the Alumni Association
General Assembly where the Executive Committee
discussed with those present issues concerning the alumni,
such as the upcoming elections for four new officers for
the Alumni Board. Alumni then had the opportunity to
greet one another during registration and the Continuum
reception. Vespers that evening was hosted by the class
of 1992 and featured a concert by Jennifer LaMountain
(former faculty).
Sabbath School was an inspirational concert presented
by the current Andrews Academy Concert Band, Handbell
Ensemble and String Orchestra. The Alumni Roll Call was
led by Debbie Weithers (’82), Alumni Board treasurer,
in the Richard T. Orrison Chapel. Special mention was
made of the recent passing of Dr. Richard T. Orrison,
principal emeritus, and alumni/development director. The
members of the class of 1962 were each presented with
an AA medallion to honor them for returning for their
6
50-year class reunion. The Alumnus of the Year Citation
was presented by AA Principal Robert Overstreet
and Chairman of the Board Brent Geraty to Mary Ann
(Kimmel) McNeilus (’62).
The Sabbath worship service was presented by the
Class of 1987 with members of that class presenting most
of the service. They also chose to start a new tradition
of honoring a former faculty/staff as “Teacher of the
Year.” This year they chose Donna Wheeker, who was
AA librarian for 19 years. The sermon for the worship
service was presented by Glenn Poole II (’87). The service
included the traditional special music, When I Survey the
Wondrous Cross, by the Alumni Silhouette Choir with many
former Silhouettes joining the current choir. The service
concluded with the Heritage Blessing, The Lord Bless You
and Keep You, being sung by the entire congregation.
Following the worship service a potluck dinner was
provided for everyone. Alumni and their families filled the
Academy Commons and hallways enjoying a wonderful
meal prepared by local alumni and parents of current
students. We extend a special thanks to PPI president
Debbie Weithers (’82), Melinda Boothby-Smith (’79) and
all the volunteers for their assistance.
The traditional Shydepoke flag football game occurred
at Sylvester Field in Berrien Springs. The lady alumni vs.
school game was won by the alumni. The guy’s game was
very exciting and in the end the school team was the victors.
Many thanks to the Alumni Planning committee and
countless other volunteers for making this alumni weekend
such a great success.
Meet the 2011 Alumna of the Year
Mary Ann (Kimmel) McNeilus (’62) was born and raised
in the Berrien Springs area. She attended Emmanuel
Missionary College—which became Andrews University—
from first grade through college. She obtained a Master
of Science degree in microbiology from the University of
Michigan and an M.D. from Loma Linda University School
of Medicine. This was followed by a pediatric internship
at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and first year of
residency in pediatric hematology and oncology at McGill
University’s Montreal Children’s Hospital.
Mary Ann then returned to Minnesota and married
Marnelle McNeilus, a business manager. Her husband has
been a very supportive and encouraging partner in their
life journey together. They have three sons: Malachi, Meric,
and Micaiah. After marriage, she worked with a Rochester
multispecialty group and became board certified in
Family Medicine. In 1980, her husband suggested that
they volunteer for SAWS (Seventh-day Adventist World
Service) in the newly opened Cambodian refugee camps
along the eastern Thailand border. She resigned from the
medical group with the intention of returning in one year.
However, God had other plans. After two years in the
refugee camps, they accepted a General Conference call
to serve at a medical clinic in Juba, Sudan, and later at
Ghimbi Hospital in Ethiopia. While at Ghimbi, Mary Ann
discovered Ellen White’s written counsels concerning the
medical missionary work. She became convicted that God
was calling her to the practice of medicine as outlined in
these inspired books.
In 1986, after returning from the mission field, the
family went to Uchee Pines Institute. There, Mary Ann
received one year of training in medical missionary work
under the guidance of Drs. Calvin and Agatha Thrash. Since
then, Mary Ann has practiced and lectured extensively
on natural treatments and disease prevention. Mary Ann
and Marnelle have a home health retreat in southeastern
Minnesota—Mercy Valley Farm—located at the edge of
the Big Woods. They use
practical home remedies
in their work among
the Amish in nearby
communities. Mary Ann
has also assisted the
Amish midwives with
numerous homebirths.
In 1993, Mary Ann and her friend Judy Aitken, founder
and director of Adventist Southeast Asia Projects,
returned to Cambodia on the first of many mission trips to
Southeast Asia. At that time, she saw the need for training
gospel workers to more effectively minister to the physical
and spiritual wellbeing of their people. In response to that
need, she compiled a simple manual entitled God’s Healing
Way. This manual has been translated and printed into
more than 20 languages and dialects around the world.
From her 25 years of experience in the medical
missionary work, Mary Ann has found this healing
modality to be one of the most effective ways for removing
prejudice and opening hearts to the gospel truth for this
time. The medical missionary work is divinely designed
to heal the whole being—body, mind and soul. It points
people to Jesus, the Heavenly Healer, and the blessed hope
of spending eternity with Him! It is her desire that God’s
people may experience the joy and satisfaction that comes
from personally ministering to others in a suffering and
dying world.

Remembering
Dr. Richard T. Orrison
Excerpted from Tom Baker’s presentation at
Dr. Orrison’s memorial service held Sept. 10, 2011.
W
hen I first encountered Dr. Richard Orrison in 1969, he was the head dean of men at La Sierra Towers. He
stood near the reception desk talking to Aaron Armada, who was an RA. Even without a suit, he looked like
he could have walked out of the board room at Boeing, Ford Motor Company or the Union Pacific Railway.
Although I did not know the dean’s name, his bearing impressed me with a vague disquieting notion that he would be hard
to please, but I didn’t think beyond that first glimpse because I knew our paths would never cross again.
In 1976, downsizing had cost me my job, and a good friend and supporter had taken a position at Andrews University
and promised to put in a good word for me with one Dr. Orrison, the principal of Andrews Academy. That led to a
detailed interview over the telephone and an invitation to work for Andrews Academy. I was surprised when I arrived on
campus to discover that this man was none other than that dean of men I had seen a few years earlier at La Sierra Towers.
From the telephone interview I already sensed that this man knew how to ask the right questions, and his responses to
the questions I asked him revealed a person who had a clear vision of what he wanted the school to become. He furthered
that impression when a thick Number 10 business envelope arrived with a personal letter and a document entitled, “The
10
Educational Philosophy of Andrews Academy.” I read the
document and thought, “This guy really goes to a lot of
trouble to nail down every detail.” From the first day of
school, I saw that going to a lot of trouble to nail down
every detail was de rigueur for Dr. O. If he could help it, he
left nothing to chance. One of his many sayings was, “This
event does not come about by happenstance, but by design.”
Dr. Orrison was not only the principal; he also nurtured
both students and teachers. During registration for the first
quarter, the vice principal had forgotten to place a limit on
two grammar review classes I was assigned to teach. Each
class ended up with between 45 and 55 students, none of
whom were particularly excited about reviewing English
grammar. The students ran the classroom, and my frustration
grew to the point where I wrote a letter to the headmaster
of Culver Military Academy, outlining my experience and
qualifications to teach English and German. His reply I still
recall, “Mr. Baker, we thank you for your letter, but we just
tendered a contract for a German teacher two weeks ago.”
I saw no way out and in desperation went to Dr. Orrison
to admit my problem and resign. I said something like, “Dr.
Orrison, I accepted the job thinking I could do this, but it’s
obvious that I am not cutting it.” At this point I thought he
might say, “What, we move you here, and now you can’t do
the job?” To my surprise, his response was uplifting and
encouraging. “Tom, I believe you can get control of the
situation.” We ended the conversation with prayer, and I
left his office encouraged but still concerned. I confessed
my lack to a colleague, Mrs. Wills, who offered the
following advice, “Just watch Dr. Orrison.” I thought, “I’m
watching him, but I can’t be Dr. Orrison, and I don’t see
how watching him will help me.”
Prayer and paying attention to this extraordinary
principal must have helped, because by the second quarter
the students were paying attention, giving me confidence
that I could do the job. Several years passed, and one
evening as I was leaving the new building, Dr. O was sitting
in one of the chairs just outside his office and I stopped
to chat. The conversation turned to that day in the first
quarter of my first year when I came to confess my failure
as a teacher and resign. He said he had heard good things
about a new class I was teaching called New Testament
The crown that Richard Orrison will wear
one day will be quite heavy with jewels... one
for each of us that he so gently led and set an
excellent example for. Thank You, Dr. O! You
didn’t realize that behind the scenes we WERE
really listening and paying attention.
—Cindy Kassner Ortmann, ’82
“Dr. Orrison provided a practical application of
leadership and the importance of consistency.
I still model his principles of leadership to this
day and view him as the benchmark for running
an exemplary Christian education program.
My prayers are with his wife, sons, the rest of
the family and all of us who were touched by
this leadership giant.”

Classics, a literary approach to the study of the Gospels
of Mark and John, and Revelation. He said, “Tom, I knew
you would make it.” I asked. “How could you possibly have
known? I certainly didn’t.” He said, “I knew things would
improve because you recognized the problem.”
But Dr. Orrison was not merely a person who nurtured;
he was a model of how to work with teenagers. One
afternoon in a faculty meeting, the discussion turned to
some problem students and the challenges they created.
He quoted Philippians 1:6, “For I am confident of this very
thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until
the day of Christ Jesus.”
That text furnished his philosophical framework for
dealing with students. He went on to advise us, “When
teenagers do something irrational, don’t ask them why
they did it. They don’t know why they did it, and your
discussion will go nowhere.” What he explained that day
helped me because I viewed good behavior as sort of a
logical thing: If you behaved well, life was easier. I couldn’t
see why the students didn’t see things as I did. Just be
logical. Dr. O’s insights changed my entire way of dealing
with teenage excesses. Don’t expect perfection; just be
confident of how God works with all of us. I have Dr. O
and the apostle Paul to thank for the change in my thinking.
Spiritual growth in his students and his teachers was
important to Dr. Orrison, and for years he led out in
planning the student week of prayer. One such year stands
out sharply in my memory to this day. I cannot recall the
theme, but the event ended with portraying the Second
Coming. No one portrayed Jesus, but the students did
involve Pastor Morrison, whose voice at the proper
moment could be heard over the speaker system saying, “It
is finished.” Then students who had been lying under the
chapel stage began crawling out and looking up. Dozens
of students rose from their graves, even Dan Bacchiocchi
‘dressed’ as a Roman prelate. The event reminded everyone
of the reality of that day.
Dr. Orrison also succumbed to moments of comic relief.
About 1981 the school was preparing for reaccreditation
11
I love you Dr. Orrison! You changed my life
when I needed it most. Thank you. I think you
adopted everyone you knew. I couldn’t be more
proud or thankful to be one of them.

with North Central Association of Secondary Schools and
Colleges. Our document was to be in narrative form and
the content had to respond to specific questions. That
required that each teacher write a detailed narrative about
the area taught. It also required an editing committee.
Dr. O appointed Pat Morrison, Alan Anderson, Charlene
Vitrano, Dr. Karen Shea and me.
One evening, the group was going over my report. A
committee member raised a question about a paragraph
I had written. I attempted to explain, but Dr. Orrison
interrupted. I thought to myself, “I’m going to try
something. It might get me fired, but the temptation is
overwhelming.” One of Dr. O’s intimidating comments to
students talking in chapel was: “Why are you talking when
I’m talking?” I had to use it, and so I turned to Dr. Orrison,
looked him directly in the eye, and said in as imperious a
tone as I could muster, “Why are you talking when I’m
talking?” He just burst out laughing.
On occasion his penchant for comic relief got out of
hand. Sharon Russell and I accompanied him with 48 or so
students on what he called the “Lincoln Land Tour.” We
visited Springfield, Illinois, Silver Dollar City in Missouri,
Hannibal, Missouri, and drove by Jesse Stuart’s home in
Kentucky. One night we stayed at a motel in southern
Illinois. The motel was a two-story structure with
balconies facing the parking lot. The motel also happened
to be across the street from a strip mall that had a Family
Dollar store or some establishment like that. The store
happened to be having a sale on squirt guns, including the
large Tommy gun type. Our students ran over there and
probably cleaned out the store’s inventory on squirt guns.
A few minutes after the mass purchase, I responded
to a knock on my motel room door. Opening the door, I
saw Dr. Orrison, Tommy gun in hand, who, backed up by
several eager student supporters, began blasting me with
his Tommy gun. After duly soaking me, Dr. O and his gang
of squirt gun thugs ran to the door of the next hapless
victim. This went on until some other guests in the motel
complained to management that a group of disorderly
kids were raising a ruckus. Dr. Orrison promised the head
office that he would tend to this group of unruly students
and quickly collected the squirt guns. He probably added
that he knew who the ringleader was and that guy would
pay for his malevolent deeds.
12
One final feature of my relationship with this man was that
it developed into a friendship. Even after Dr. Orrison left
to teach in the Andrews University School of Education,
I visited him at his home on Bluffview Drive and later at
his retirement condo in Benton Harbor. We discussed
what was happening at the Academy, the implications for
spiritual growth of some ideas being discussed, the political
situation at the time, what our children were doing, and
what we knew about how various alumni were doing.
Although years had passed since Dr. Orrison was principal,
I had the privilege of traveling with him to Orlando, Fla., for
an alumni gathering. We also made two trips to the Loma
Linda area to participate in fund raisers he had organized.
From observing our former principal in these settings, it
was obvious that students appreciated his efforts on their
behalf and genuinely liked him.
At a convention of the National Council of Teachers
of English held in Pittsburgh in 1992, I encountered
a colleague who had lived in Berrien Springs and was
acquainted with Andrews Academy. She asked me if Dr.
Orrison intimidated me. I countered her assumption,
which she strongly insisted upon, that I must have lived
under a constant intimidation. I replied, “No, Dr. Orrison
was my friend and my mentor.”
God leads us down many paths. He led me to Andrews
Academy and guided me through the influence of Dr.
Orrison. I paraphrase the words of a man who taught rural
school in Minnesota, they apply here. “Were it possible
for me to sell my experiences with Dr. Orrison and the
students at Andrews Academy for a million dollars, I would
quickly turn down the offer. A million dollars is merely
money and is easily spendable. My experiences have been
life—which is not spendable.” I look forward to continued
chats with Dr. Orrison under the Tree of Life where we
can study salvation history and really learn who God is and
who, I imagine, will return in the words of Dr. Orrison,
“with style, class and a flourish” at the Second Coming.
I was attending Andrews Academy the first
year Dr. Orrison arrived and remember him as
an exceptional principal—a big man, in many
ways. He remained caring and personable in
the many years since—calling me by name and
asking about my family, even though probably
thousands of students were at AUA after that.
He was truly a blessing and inspiration to many
and will be missed. Thankfully, we have that
wonderful hope of a reunion with loved ones!
May that time come quickly!

A Report of Giving
June 30, 2006—May 1, 2012
This has been an important year in the history of Andrews Academy. 2011–12 was the first year under the leadership
of our new principal, Robert Overstreet. Mr. Overstreet is a grace-filled teambuilder who addresses issues head
on while doing so with a Christlike spirit. It is an honor to be supporting his leadership. Speaking of leadership, we
were all saddened by the death of Dr. Richard Orrison in September 2011. Dr. Orrison, principal par excellence, was
the individual who most placed a stamp of influence on Andrews Academy and generations of alumni are grateful.
I believe that this is the first time ever that Andrews Academy has been able to celebrate four National Merit
Finalists in a single year! Think of that—it is amazing. Jee Yeon Lee, Seong Min Lee, Ashley Reichert and Kyle
Whiteside are not just brilliant students, they are well-rounded, humble and gracious human beings. This has been
the final year for the iconic English teacher, Tom Baker. Mr. Baker will remain in the area and Andrews Academy
will continue to benefit from his wisdom and involvement, even as he retires from teaching.
The current Andrews Academy board voted itself out of existence. A new 14-member board will replace the
outgoing 37-member board. We did not change just to become smaller; we changed to become more nimble and
more effective. We who serve on the board recognize, of course, that what we do is secondary to what the faculty,
staff and administration do every day. They are the ones who are inspiring Andrews Academy students “to think
deeply, live fully, serve unselfishly, and honor God completely,” as called for in the school’s mission statement.
Andrews Academy is not a perfect school, but it is a great school. With your help and your support, we are making
it even better—not so that we can be proud, but so that every Andrews Academy student can reflect the image
of their Maker.
Brent Geraty—Chair, AA Board

ways to give:
Alumni and friends may support Andrews Academy’s continuing quest to offer an exemplary Seventh-day Adventist
Christian education program in a variety of ways. They are invited to select from the following options:
Annual Fund
Endowed Funds
Gifts to the Annual Fund are the most valuable to the
operation of the school in that they may be applied
where the need is greatest. These gifts are especially
important because they contribute to the security and
stability of the school program. This fund helps the
school weather the ebbs and flows resulting from the
fluctuation of enrollment from year to year.
Endowment gifts are a major contribution to the school’s
future stability. These gifts are invested in interestearning accounts and the income is used annually for the
purpose that the endowment designates.
Currently Andrews Academy holds 20 endowment
funds. The present endowments include:
•
The Andrews Academy Class of 1961 Endowment Fund
Worthy Student Fund
•
The Andrews Academy Endowed Fund for Worthy
Students
•
The Class of 2005 Endowment for Spiritual Activities
•
The Arthur E. Axelson Memorial Endowed
Scholarship Fund
•
The C. Randall Bauer Memorial Endowed Fund
•
The Helen Burbank Ipes Endowed Scholarship Fund
•
The Clementina S. Nicolas Davis Endowed
Scholarship Fund
•
The Kimberly K, Keller Memorial Endowed Fund
•
The Kenneth W. and Helen M. Kilgore Endowed
Scholarship Fund
•
The Charles and Florence Mauro Endowed
Scholarship Fund
•
The James R. Nash Andrews Academy Operating
Endowment Fund
Significant contributions to the school operations may
be made through gifts-in-kind, which carry tax benefits.
These are material gifts of value, such as antiques,
collections, equipment, vehicles and real property that
can enrich the curricular or co-curricular programs.
•
The Douglas R. Newberry Endowed Scholarship Fund
•
The Richard T. Orrison Endowed Scholarship Fund
•
The Paul Root Memorial Endowment
•
The Smith-Vitrano Memorial Endowment Fund
•
The Andrew J. and Julia T. Snyder Endowed
Scholarship Fund
Planned Giving
•
The Luke Tkachuck Memorial Endowment Fund
Planned Giving provides donors with a means to give that
integrates sound personal, financial and estate-planning
concepts with plans for lifetime or testamentary giving. A
planned gift has tax implications and is often transmitted
through a legal document, such as a Will or a trust.
•
The Thomas A. & Eleanor G. Umek Memorial
Endowment Fund
•
The Vitrano Alumni Advancement Endowed Fund
•
The Londa Zimmerman Sweezey Endowed
Scholarship Fund
In the 2011–2012 school year approximately 21% of
the students attended because of tuition supplements
applied to their accounts from the Worthy Student Fund.
Without the gifts regularly made by Alumni and Friends,
these tuition supplements would not have been possible.
The enrollment would likely have been about 180
students rather than the almost 230 who are currently
members of the Andrews Academy family. Gifts to this
fund are applied directly to worthy students’ tuition
accounts. The call on this account is perpetual, especially
in these financially difficult times, thus it is very important
that the gifts are also perpetual.
Gifts-In-Kind
Special Projects
Often donors have a special interest in a specific aspect
of the curriculum such as music, art, science, physical
education or technology. Special funds are established for
each area and gifts to these funds enrich the quality of
these programs.

The following lists represent contributions received between 6/30/06 and 5/1/12. We wish to thank each and every person
who donated. With their assistance we were able to provide the quality education for which Andrews Academy is known.

I would like to personally thank you for your help and support on
my behalf for this school year. It means a great deal to me that you
would help me with my financial situation so that I could complete
my senior year at AA and graduate with my class.
I have worked diligently to start this year off strong and I am
maintaining my goal to finish successfully. So far, I have earned
above average grades in all of my classes, and I participate in
school activities.
Due to your kindness and financial support, I will be able to
complete my high school journey as I have hoped since freshmen
year. I realize that Christian education is both a sacrifice and a
privilege, neither of which I intend to take lightly. When I prayed
and asked God to open this door, He did. It is my intention to
make good use of this opportunity by maintaining my grades and
making good on every opportunity presented.
Thank you kindly.

Thank you for giving me
an opportunity to attend
Andrews Academy this year.
I am very grateful and I will
try my hardest to excel in
all my academics. I truly love
the atmosphere of Andrews
Academy, the people here
are always so nice and they
even have the light in their
eyes that we call having
Jesus in your heart. That is
truly something and so, I am
honored to be a part of this
student body. So once again I
say thank you very much.

As parents of three students in a
private school we appreciate the
support. Christian education is
a necessity in our contemporary
world. Sadly, many can’t do it. It is
not a secret that it is expensive, it is
a challenge, but with trusting in the
Lord, somehow we are still here.
When I see that one of our kids is a
teacher for a Sabbath School class for
young people in our church, and they
are involved in Christian activities,
we can say, ‘It was good!’ Thanks for
your support.
I would like to express my gratitude
by saying thank you for the financial
aid that you have given me. It is
through this aid that I am able to
attend Andrews Academy. I feel so
blessed to have this opportunity and
feel doubly blessed with the financial
aid. There are so many things that
I enjoy about AA. The friendly and
spiritual environment are what I
enjoy most; I love how the students
are friendly and the teachers godly.
When I am at AA, I feel loved,
welcomed and accepted.

When I go to college I hope to major
in architecture and I know that AA
will have prepared me well. I hope
that I can use the knowledge and the
love that I have learned at AA to help
me reach other people in need. I want
to share with others the God that I
have come to know here at AA. So
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the
financial aid. May God keep blessing
you just as you have blessed me.
