Cool Tricks to Train Your Dog
By Tenley Alderson
If you continue to do this with your dog, a
few different times a day for five minutes
each time, your dog will be dancing in
circles in no time!
Not only are they sweet, dogs are some
of the smartest animals you may ever meet.
What Kinds of Games Do You Play on
Your Electronics?
By Andrew Gambill
Many breeds have great memories, meaning
they're great at learning fun tricks. Do you
have a dog? If so, here's a fun trick you can
teach them to show off to your friends!
Before we start, it's important you have a
bunch of treats and lots of enthusiasm when
you're training your dog. They're more likely
to react when you seem excited to be with
them.
An easy trick to teach is "spin” which is so
fun!
First, make sure your dog is standing.
Then, hold a treat near your dog's nose and
slowly guide it in a circle, so your dog has to
turn around to follow it.
If they turn in a full circle, praise your dog
and give them the treat.
Repeat the slow turns until your dog
understands and then start to say "spin"
when they turn around.
What are your favorite games? Many
students say they enjoy Pokemon Go, Boom
Boom, Football Go, Super Mario, Talking
Tom and Minecraft. Minecraft is a great
game because the player has to learn how to
build houses, raise animals, and store food.
Kids also say their favorite devices are Xbox
and RCA Tablets.
Finally, this journalist asked people what
their favorite phone game was and people
said Angry Birds.

Top Five Kids’ Books—EVER!
By Megan Phillips
Curling up with a good book is a great way
to spend your time. Here is a list of 5 books
that are recommended by kids your age that
you should read. Make sure to check these
books out sometime!
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
This story is an old favorite of many; even
kids from the high school have read this as a
kid. Read through the adventures of a silly
little mouse who just wants a cookie, but the
story soon shows that the mouse wants
more, and more, and more…
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
This story is a good read about a kid that
endures
middle
school. Greg
tries to live a
normal life
and to just fit
in at school.
But it's kind
of hard for
him with his
family. This
book is sure
to give you a
good laugh.
Dr. Suess
It would be a crime to leave Dr. Seuss off
this list. He definitely deserves a place
because, after all, he has as many as 44
books. Generations (including your moms
and dads) have grown up reading Suess’
stories. Who could forget The Cat in the
Hat, or How The Grinch Stole Christmas or
Green Eggs and Ham, or Oh, The Places
You’ll Go!
Captain Underpants
Captain Underpants is a very recognizable
title. The story revolves around two fourth
graders and their principal, who accidentally
becomes a superhero from the boy's comics
they created. The novel has comics and
action scenes in it, as well as telling a funny
story. There are twelve Captain Underpants
books in a series and the series has won a
Disney Adventures Kid's Choice Awards.
Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot
Coming from the author of Captain
Underpants comes a new adventure. Ricky
becomes friends with a robot, and together,
they help capture and put evil villains
behind bars. There are nine books following
these two heroes. Like Captain Underpants,
Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot has "flip-oramas" to illustrate cool fight scenes.
Mrs. McIntyre’s Favorite Book for Little
Readers: Love You Forever, Like You for
Always
This story, by Robert Munsch, is a beautiful
story about a mother who loves her little boy
through all the phases of growing up: when
he’s a tiny baby, a toddler, a teenager, a
college
student, a
young
father and
as an older
man. I read
this book
every night
for years to
my
children,
Hannah and
Alex,
because I’ll love them forever and like them
for always!
Ask your teachers what their favorite books
are!
The Book Fair Will Be Here Soon
By Erykah Barahona
Every fall and spring, the elementary school
has the book fair in the library at the
elementary school.
What is the book fair? The school is
provided with many books, posters and
small items children can buy with their
parents.
The money that is raised allows the school
to buy more books for children to read.
There will be scary stories, animal stories,
funny stories, cartoons, and many more
types of books to choose from! My favorite
kind of books are scary and fiction ones.
Future 4th graders can look forward to
continuing the book fair as well. The middle
school also hosts the book fair in their
library, so don't worry! You’ll have many
more years to buy books!
The FFA Has a Pet Pig!
By Adie Olson
Did you know that the FFA owns a pig? Ms.
Florence, the agriculture teacher at the high
school is the primary caretaker.
Her name is Cocoa and she is four years
old. She lives at the land lab outside of
town. Since she is a girl, she is also called a
sow.
Cocoa just had baby pigs after being
pregnant for a long time. She had three
babies.
She tends to eat around seven to nine
pounds of food per day. As you can imagine
feeding her can get expensive.
Cocoa's breed is a Hampshire, that means
her coloring is black with a white strip.
Taking care of pigs can be hard work—it
includes feeding them, giving them water
twice a day and cleaning out their pens,
which is gross but needed.
When it's here, be sure to come to the book
fair and help your school and get a good
book!

Athena Elementary Library is full of books!
Raising a pig is very rewarding in the end.
According to Ally Mann, a member of the
high school FFA and Ag classes, “Raising a
pig is fun, helps me to save for college, and
shows me how important it is to take of
animals properly.”
Fun Facts About Lions
By Keree Graves
Has anyone ever wondered why a lion is
called “the king of the jungle?” To be clear
lions do not live in the jungle they live in
very tall grassland and plains.
A lion is the only type of feline that has a
mane, the thick and majestic mane are
thought to make the lion look bigger and
more intimidating to predators.
Though lions are said to be kings, they are
not the biggest feline; lions come second
right behind tigers, weighing up at 200 to
500 pounds.
Scared of no other, the mighty lion's roar
can be heard up to five miles away! Roaring
is a sign of marking territory, or to find other
lion’s. A pride, which is a group of lions, is
led by the oldest and strongest male.
While females go to hunt for food the males
stay behind to watch over the pride; a pride's
territory can be up to 100 square miles!
Lions are very strong and courageous
animals; they are used for very many
national symbols such as Albania, Belgium,
Bulgaria, England, Ethiopia, Luxembourg,
the Netherlands, and Singapore.
In the end, the Lion is called the 'King of the
Jungle' because of how the people view it as
a big ferocious creature that is full of pride
and majesty. That is why it is so loved by
many people, and why it rules the jungles
around the world!
