Kailua Intermediate School 20162017 School Year 8th Grade Application Attention 7th Grade Students and Parents… AVID Recruitment has begun! AVID , which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination , is an academic program dedicated to helping students set and achieve goals by preparing them for college eligibility and success. AVID places academically average students in advanced courses with the support of the AVID Elective Class. Students are selected based on academic and social ability, college potential, desire and determination . We are so excited to be able to offer this outstanding program to students who are interested in improving their academic, social, and leadership skills as they prepare for and want to continue their education after high school. AVID targets students in the academic middle, this means students who usually earn B’s and sometimes C’s for grades, but have the potential of earning A’s and B’s with support and guidance, have the desire to go to college, and demonstrate the willingness to work hard in order to better themselves. In AVID, students are pulled out of their ordinary and often time comfortable academic courses, and are placed on a more high school/college ready rigorous course of study. Students will also take the AVID elective course as a requirement. The AVID elective provides ongoing support and motivation by teaching and applying higher level questioning strategies, the WICOR methodologies and techniques, offering mandatory biweekly tutorials, study/learning group sessions, team building and collaboration, weekly grade monitoring and conferencing, and many field study opportunities. Our program is currently enrolling twenty five (25) incoming 8th Grade Students for the 2016 – 2017 school year. Interested students must complete the attached application packet, which includes an essay, and recommendation forms from the current 7th Grade Math Teacher, and any 2 other Academic Teachers. Potential AVID Candidates will then be contacted for a formal interview. A waiting list will begin once all the positions are filled.
