Read the following paragraph and answer the questions. In 1421 King Alfonso of Aragona pawned the Maltese Islands to Anton de Cardona who was acting on behalf of Don Gonsalvo Monroy. The Muslim attacks of 1423 and the shortage of food in the following years led the Gozitans to revolt against Monroy in 1425. By 1426 the uprising spread to Malta. Monroy’s wife, and those loyal to her, sought shelter in the castrum maris taking with them the vessels of the Maltese. King Alfonso was of the opinion that the Maltese should not have revolted and started preparing an army to attack Malta and put an end to the revolt. Maltese representatives went to speak to the king and reached an agreement with him whereby the Maltese were to pay Monroy the sum of 30,000 gold florins originally paid by Monroy. In 1428 the king promised that Malta would become part of the Royal Land and that it would not be given in fief or rented again in the future. Before Monroy died in 1429 he waived the remaining 10,000 florins the Maltese still owed him as he was a kind hearted person.
