Testing with ProctorU - University of Nevada, Reno

Testing with ProctorU
Students residing outside of a 100-mile radius of UNR and who
are not registered for face-to-face classes on the UNR campus are
required to take their proctored exams through ProctorU, a service
that allows students to complete their required supervised exams
remotely.
Even though ProctorU will allow you to take your proctored exam
from any location—including your own home—you will still need to
adhere to strict testing environment requirements and strict testing
rules. You will not be able to take breaks from your exam, step away
from your computer, or glance away from your computer screen for
extended periods of time once the testing session has begun. If you
do, the proctor will report the incident to your instructor and 365
Learning. Therefore, you should prepare ahead of time to sit for the
exam (normally two hours) without interruption.
If you are suspected of using unauthorized materials, ProctorU will
submit an incident report and video recording to 365 Learning for
review. 365 Learning and your instructor will determine subsequent
action and inform you in accordance with the University’s Academic
Standards Policy.
Scheduling Your Appointment
Each proctored exam for your online course has scheduled testing
days (see the specific exam modules within your course site for the
designated testing dates). ProctorU is available twenty-four hours
each day for proctoring, which means you can take your exam at a
time that’s most convenient for you. Exams must be taken within the
specified date range; early or late exams are not permitted. (Exams
taken with ProctorU must be completed by the deadline listed in the
course site on the last scheduled testing day.)
In order to take your exam, you will have to make an appointment
in advance with ProctorU. You can create a ProctorU account and
schedule testing appointments by visiting go.ProctorU.com and
clicking on “New user? Sign up here.” In the enrollments section, be
sure to select “**University of Nevada, Reno – 365 Learning**” as the
institution. Don’t forget to select your correct time zone when
creating your account. To make an exam appointment, log into the
website, click on the “Schedule New Session” link, and confirm your
institution, select the term, and select your exam. You are responsible
for scheduling the correct exam. Pay close attention to the course
and section number. ProctorU will email you an appointment
confirmation of your reservation.
Important Notes
•
Appointment reservations need to be made at least three
days in advance, or you will be charged a late-reservation
fee. Late reservations are only permitted if there is
availability. You will be responsible for paying any late fees
directly to ProctorU.
•
We suggest that you schedule your appointment in advance
and schedule it to occur early in the testing week in case
you have trouble with your exam and have to reschedule
due to technical issues. To avoid technical issues and ensure
a successful testing experience, it is strongly recommended
that you test your equipment in advance.
•
Rescheduled appointments can only be accommodated
within the designated exam dates.
Testing Times
Your exam appointment must occur during the assigned testing
times listed in the course site. It’s essential that you are familiar with
the specific testing dates for your proctored exam.
ProctorU is available twenty-four hours a day, so your exam
appointment may occur anytime during the scheduled testing dates,
as long as it ends by the deadline listed in the course site. Please
keep in mind, however, that while ProctorU allows testing twentyfour hours a day, 365 Learning is only available for assistance during
our regular hours of operation: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
(PT). Remember to keep the time limit of your exam in mind when
you make your exam appointment. Leave yourself enough time to
complete the exam by the deadline listed in the course site. ProctorU
will not schedule you to test after the latest exam appointment time
available.
Please note that technical issues are not a valid excuse for missing
your exam or testing outside of the scheduled testing dates.
Schedule your appointment earlier in the week so that, if technical
issues arise, you have time to reschedule your appointment.
Scheduling the test on the last day possible means you are taking the
risk that something may come up, you won’t be able to take the test,
and there will be no time or recourse to take it during the week it is
scheduled. If you can’t take the test during the scheduled week, you
will receive a “0”.
Technical Requirements
To take your exam through ProctorU, specific hardware is required.
You are responsible for meeting these technical requirements before
your scheduled appointment. Please see the ProctorU Technical
Requirements page for more information.
You will need to take your exam on a supported device. Some
devices are not supported by ProctorU. Non-supported devices
include Google Chromebooks, Android tablets (Nexus 7, etc.), iOS
tablets (iPad, iPad mini, etc.), Linux operating systems, Microsoft
Surface RT.
You can test your computer, webcam, and Internet connection at
www.ProctorU.com/testitout/. It is strongly recommended that you
1
test your equipment before your scheduled exam appointment to
avoid technical difficulties during your exam. Technical issues are
not a valid excuse for missing your exam or testing outside of the
scheduled testing dates; such events may result in fees and/or failing
the exam.
In addition to the technical requirements, you will need a handheld
mirror during your testing appointment. ProctorU will ask you to
hold up a mirror so your proctor can see the edges of your monitor
and webcam. Scratch paper is not allowed when testing with
ProctorU; instead, you’re allowed the use of a whiteboard, dry erase
markers, and an eraser.
Required Plug-In (MATH 126, MATH 127,
and MATH 176 exams only)
To take MATH 126, MATH 127, or MATH 176 exams, your computer
must have the Pearson TestGen 7.4 plug-in installed. This installation
will likely require restarting your computer, so make sure it’s taken
care of well in advance of your first testing appointment.
To install this plug-in, go to MyMathLab’s Installation Wizard/Browser
Check. Select your textbook from the drop-down menu and then
click “Submit.” A pop-up window will appear, showing you which
applications require updating for your text edition. If you do not have
the correct plug-in for TestGen installed, you can click “Check Version”
and install the plug-in from there.
Taking Your Exam
what materials, if any, may be used for your exam. If your course
permits the use of such materials during testing, your proctor will ask
to see them before you begin your exam.
At the date and time of your appointment, return to go.ProctorU.
com and log in; a message will appear saying, “You have an exam.
Click here to begin.” Click on this button and it will automatically
take you to the proctor page. A test will automatically run to make
sure your equipment meets minimum technical requirements. Once
that is done, it will ask you to click “Allow” for your video to open.
Then click the blue “Click to Download” button and once that file is
downloaded, open it. Run the file. You will get a chatbox that will
connect you to a proctor. If you have any problems connecting,
please call ProctorU at (855) 772-8678.
Tips and Tricks
•
Test your equipment at ProctorU.com/testitout/ before your
appointment, and make sure that you meet the minimum
requirements to complete your proctored exam. Meeting
the minimum download speed is a crucial part of your exam
experience. If you do not meet the minimum requirements,
you may experience delays and/or have to reschedule your
exam with a different computer.
•
Make sure you have a fast and reliable Internet connection. If
you are connected through an intermittent Wi-Fi connection,
you will want to plug in directly to your modem to avoid
disconnecting during your exam. A wireless Internet
connection may lead to delays and technical issues that will
extend the duration of your testing session.
•
Have a handheld mirror handy for when your proctor asks
to see the edges of your computer screen. (Remember that
cell phones are not allowed during your testing session;
therefore, your cell phone screen should not be used as a
reflective surface.)
•
Scratch paper is not allowed when testing with ProctorU;
instead, you’re allowed the use of a whiteboard, dry erase
markers, and an eraser.
•
Close all unnecessary programs on your computer and
any websites in your browser before you log into ProctorU.
ProctorU will run an applet, or temporary program, on your
computer that will allow your proctor to view your screen
and what programs are running during your exam session.
This program will expire once the exam is over.
Before Your Appointment Begins
Plan ahead for your testing session and allow yourself extra time
for the check-in process. Make sure you have a quiet, private
location in which to take the exam. The room and area around your
computer will be scanned using a webcam prior to your exam, so
all unauthorized materials must be put away and the area must be
completely clear of objects.
No breaks will be allowed during your testing session, so it’s a good
idea to make sure you’re ready to sit for the duration of the exam
(e.g., use the bathroom beforehand, get a glass of water if needed).
You should also be sure that you can test uninterrupted and no other
people will be in the area in which the test is being taken. Notes or
materials not approved by the course need be put away outside of
the testing vicinity, along with cell phones and other devices. Any
attempts to cheat and/or suspicious behavior will be recorded and
reported to your instructor and a failing mark will be issued for your
exam and/or a failing grade in the course.
You will be asked to show picture identification to your proctor at
the time of your exam. One form of ID will be required and you may
need a backup, so have two forms easily accessible at the beginning
of your appointment. You will be asked a series of questions during
the identity-authentication process. If you have trouble answering
the authentication questions, your proctor will need to see a second
form of identification. Approved forms of identification include a
driver’s license, military identification card, passport, or school-issued
ID card.
Finally, have any course-approved materials—for example, a sheet
of notes for an open-note test, or a calculator for tests that allow
them—out and ready for your exam. The official list of approved
materials will be available in the exam module in your course site;
please visit this module prior to your appointment to determine

During Your Exam
After you log into ProctorU and choose your exam, you will be
connected to your designated proctor. Once connected, your proctor
will walk you through the set-up process. He or she will also be there
to assist with any technical problems you may experience. Please
plan to allow additional time for this check-in and set-up process.
After walking you through the set-up process, confirming your
identity, and reviewing your testing area and materials, your proctor
will enter the password for your examination. Your exam time will
begin when the proctor enters the examination password.
While taking your online exam, you will be able to navigate through
the exam questions and return to any you left unanswered. If you
lose connectivity, please call ProctorU immediately at (855) 772-8678.
Important: Never use the Tab key. Doing so will cause your exam to
submit. Only click “Submit Quiz” when you are completely finished
with your exam. Submissions are final, so if you submit your exam
without completing it, you will not be able to regain access to the
exam.
Testing Policies
By testing with ProctorU, you acknowledge that you have read and
understand these policies and agree to adhere to them.
Technical Issues
•
If you experience testing difficulties and ProctorU is unable
to help, the ProctorU staff will advise you to contact 365
Learning as opposed to your instructor. 365 Learning staff
are available between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
(Pacific Time) Monday through Friday to assist you with any
problems. Contact 365 Learning within twenty-four hours of
the testing difficulty.
•
If you experience a disconnection, it is your responsibility
to reconnect or contact ProctorU through your online
connection or by phone at (855) 772-8678. You can call 365
Learning at (775) 784-4652 if disconnection occurs during
365 Learning’s business hours. Disconnections (without
immediate contact with ProctorU) greater than 15 minutes
will invalidate your exam even if reconnection is established
at a later time.
•
Your proctor will be monitoring the testing session to make
sure it remains secure throughout your testing appointment.
If you are caught cheating or violating any of the policies
listed above, an incident report will be sent to 365 Learning
and your instructor, and you will receive a failing mark on
the exam and/or a failing grade in the course. If the proctor
sees you violate any of the testing policies, he or she will
report the incident to 365 Learning, who will review the
information. Note that these incidents will still be reported
even if the proctor does not terminate your testing session.
Authorized Materials
•
Unless authorized to access other materials on your
computer, you must remain within the exam site at all
times. Attempting to access external websites and/or course
materials in your WebCampus course site is never permitted
and will invalidate your exam.
•
You may not use notes unless permitted by your course. Any
unpermitted materials must be put away and nowhere in
your vicinity before you begin your exam. Your proctor may
ask you to remove items from your desk or the area around
your computer during your exam.
•
No cell phones or smart devices of any kind allowed. If a
student is found with a cell phone or smart device out for
any reason, a failing mark will be issued for the exam and/or
a failing grade for the course. No exceptions.
•
If you are suspected of using unauthorized materials,
ProctorU will submit an incident report and video recording
to 365 Learning for review. 365 Learning and your instructor
will determine subsequent action and inform you in
accordance with the University’s Academic Standards Policy.
Any time lost due to security checks or room pans cannot be
“made up” or added to the end of your allotted exam time.
Conduct
•
•
•
You must keep your gaze centered on the computer
screen as you take your exam. 365 Learning considers
glancing away from the screen frequently or for extended
periods of time to indicate cheating, and will invalidate your
exam.
Exam Submission
•
Only click “Submit Quiz” when you are completely finished
with your exam. Submissions are final, so if you submit your
exam without completing it, you will not be able to regain
access to the exam.
•
You are responsible for notifying your proctor when you have
completed the exam, prior to disconnecting, so that your
proctor can verify submission. Failure to communicate this
with your proctor will result in an Incident Report.
Exams must be completed alone in a quiet, private location,
with NO distractions: turn off your phone, TV, and radio. Your
testing environment must remain secure throughout the
exam.
Contacts and Help
Exams must be completed at a table or desk cleared of all
objects.
365 Learning
•
If you access your phone or a smart device, or if another
individual is present or interrupts you in your testing
location, your exam will be invalidated by 365 Learning.
•
You may not leave the webcam viewing area or move
your webcam while testing; if you move out of view of the
webcam, your exam will be invalidated by 365 Learning.

Academic Honesty
•

exam and/or a failing grade in the course will be issued if it is
determined that you have accessed unauthorized materials
of any kind. Cases of academic dishonesty are reported to
the University’s Office of Student Conduct.
