Name: 7th grade Homework # Currency Conversions Part 1: Currency Conversions as Ratios Sally went to Europe 3 years ago. She reported that she exchanged $100 US dollars and received 76 Euros. Use this fact to answer the questions below. Fill out the table below which compares the currencies between the US and Europe. Then make a graph of your data. Ignore the 100 in the graph. 1. Describe the shape of your graph. 2. Should you connect the dots on your graph? Why or why not? 3. Is the relationship between dollars and Euros “proportional”? Explain. 4. Use your graph to estimate how much $8 is worth in Euros. 5. Use your graph to estimate how much 8 Euros is worth in dollars. 6. What is the unit rate for this problem? Explain the meaning of the unit rate in terms of the problem. 7. Write an equation that could be used to represent the relationship between dollars and Euro. Part 2: Modeling Proportional Relationships. You have already seen that a ratio table and a graph can be used to represent a proportional relationship. Now let’s look at another model to see what additional insight we gain. For each problem below, use a double number line to solve the problem. Place at least TWO other pairs of numbers on your number lines. 1. If you know that Sally exchanged $40 for 1255.6 Russian Rubles, draw a double number line and use only the number line to try to find the exchange rate between these two countries. 2. While travelling in New Zealand, Jim paid $236 New Zealand dollars for an ipod. He knew the ipod would have cost him $200 in the United States. Use the double number line below to find the exchange rate between these two countries. Side Note: Does this mean that items are more expensive in New Zealand? 3. Use the following double number line to make up a story problem about a made up currency. Then check your work with a proportion to see if you get the same answer. Part 3: Unit Conversions of Various Currencies The table below represents currency exchange rates for several foreign countries. Use these numbers to set up proportions to answer the questions below. Prices collected on March 28, 2017. Currency Egyptian Pound Jamaica Dollars Hong Kong Dollar Japanese Yen Mexican Peso New Zealand Dollar Russian Ruble Australian Dollar Canadian Dollar Euro (Europe) Chilean Peso Tanzania Schilling Worth $1 US dollar 18.25 128.90 7.77 110.22 18.84 1.42 56.97 1.31 1.34 0.92 666.80 2232 1. A car costs $10,000 in America, how much will it cost in Egypt? How about in Japan? 2. You are shopping for groceries in Tanzania. You are panicked about how much money you are spending because a gallon of milk costs 9000 Schilling and a pound of hamburger costs 10000 Schilling. Should you really be panicked? What is your total grocery bill in US dollars? 3. Last year, one US dollar was worth 14.7 pesos in Mexico. Last week it was worth 18.84 pesos instead. How does this affect you as a consumer? Will you pay more or less for the same item? Why? Test this out by converting a 100 Peso item into US dollars using both rates separately. 4. You have 350 Pounds and want to convert them into Pesos. How many will you get? 5. In Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the money is referred to as dollars. You record the price of a Big Mac in each of these countries: in Australia $2.50, in New Zealand $2.99, and in Canada $2.35. In which country are you getting the best deal? The worst deal? 6. While shopping in a particular foreign country, you notice that the prices on the items seem reasonable. You would be willing to pay that amount in US dollars. Use the currency table on the previous page to answer the following questions. a. In which countries would you be getting ripped off? In which country would you be getting the best deal? b. In which countries would you be getting a killer deal? c. In which countries would the price be about the same? Part 4: Your African Country 1. Use the internet to find the exchange rate for your chosen African Country. Country: Currency: One US Dollar = 2. In researching your country, what information have you found that would explain why its currency value is the way it is? 3. You want to buy an ipod for $200. How much does it cost in the currency of your country? Is it more or less expensive? Post this info on your world fair poster. 4. Research three objects that you would want to be able to buy in your country and look up their cost. Then use the exchange rate to calculate how much each item would cost in US dollars. How much US money would you need to take to be able to buy all three of these items? a. Item #1 Cost in your country? US cost? b. Item #2 Cost in your country? US cost? c. Item #3 Cost in your country? US cost? TOTAL US dollars needed?
