Introduction to SchoolVue version 10
GETTING STARTED
Click on the CrossTec SchoolVue Tutor Console icon to launch the program.
Enter the password provided by your department secretary. The program scans
the room and creates an icon for each computer. By default, the computer
name is shown. If you prefer to see the student names, you must request that students
“register”. Click on the Student Register button on the top menu. On the Register
Students screen, specify what information you want the students to provide. To use
actual student names, uncheck the Get Logged on User Name box, then check the
First Name and/or Surname boxes. The Custom Fields option can be used to gather
other information, such as the name of group project assignments. Once you are done
selecting options, click the Register button to send the Registration form to the
students. Keep this Register Students window open until all students have registered.
Once this window is closed, you must repeat this process to register any students who
come in late.
After registering, the student icons change from generic to personalized. Any Custom
Field information will appear when you hover over the icon with your mouse.
Notes:
 only one Tutor console can control a room at a time
 if SchoolVue fails to see or loses the connection to a student computer, have the
student restart that computer.
 minimizing the SchoolVue window gives you an “always on” toolbar at the top of
your screen with the most commonly used functions
 this is only a brief overview of the program - visit

USING THE PROGRAM
SchoolVue is a sophisticated program with many features, but it can also be used very
simply. For many instructors, blanking the student screens while lecturing may be all
the control needed. Let’s look at some of the most commonly used commands.
For all of these, assume that you have already launched SchoolVue and the students
have registered. Some commands apply to all users by default. If a button is grayed
out, you need to select the computer(s) you want to affect. Use Ctrl-click to select
individuals, or use Ctrl-A to select all.
Lock Students Mouse and Keyboard
This seems to be everyone’s favorite! Select the computers, then click the Lock
in the Horizontal toolbar. An Attention is Required screen displays on the student
machines. Click Unlock to restore use.
Blank All Student Screens
Another useful tool – with one click on the Blank All button, all your student
screens go black. Click it again to resume.
View Student Screens (individual users)
There are three modes in which you can use View Client. In all three, the
student’s screen will be displayed on both your computer and the student
computer. Who has control of the computer is the only difference:
Share - Both instructor and student will be able to enter keystrokes and mouse
movements.
Watch - Only the student will be able to enter keystrokes and mouse
movements. The instructor will be locked out.
Control - Only the instructor will be able to enter keystrokes and mouse
movements. The student will be locked out.
While viewing a student, click the View Mode icon on the View window toolbar
and select Share, Watch or Control to switch modes.
A beep lets the student know you’re watching. Close the student window by
clicking the X in the upper right corner.

Show (multiple users)
This allows you to demonstrate techniques to one or more students, or have a
student take control and lead the demonstration. There are several options:
Show – displays your screen to selected students. Options for Show include:
Create a Replay file at Student – when checked, captures changes to your
screen and saves the file on the student desktop for later review.
Do not check the Send Physical Fonts box – it will slow down performance
considerably.
To annotate your screen, double click the pencil icon next to the green
arrow in the system tray.
To End, Suspend, or give control to a student, right click the green arrow
in the system tray and select your option.
Show Video – broadcasts a video from your computer. For better playback, use
the data projector instead.
Show Replay – plays a Replay file on selected student computers.
Show Application – open an application, click the Select button, and the
students can watch you demonstrate. This has the same options as the main
Show window.
Exhibit – displays one student screen to the others.
Chat with Student(s)
Select the student(s) you want to include in the Chat session. By default, all students
will be included. Right click on any student and select Chat. Choose any options you
prefer, enter a Topic, and click OK. A Chat window opens on all selected computers.
Send a Message to Student(s)
Select the student(s) you want to message (you can select all on the next screen). Right
click on any student and select Message. Choose your options, type your message and
click Send. The message appears at the top of student screens.
Student Help Requests
Students can request help
via the lifesaver ring at the
right of their menu bar.
After sending the request,
their menu bar turns red. On the teacher station, that machine’s icon will have either a
red cross or a red menu bar. A separate message window pops up containing the help
request message. From this window, you can View the student’s desktop and Chat with
him to answer the question. To get rid of the red, click the Clear All button.

Co-Browse
Select the student(s) that are to be included in the session. Click the Co-Browse
button. You can now lead the students through various web pages, with the added
security of locking the students’ computers so they can only view the pages opened by
you. The Co-Browser is not supported with websites that use Flash navigation or Java
scripting.
Approved/Restricted Websites and Applications
Use the Manage Website Access and Manage Student Applications buttons to add
sites or applications to your restricted list. You can turn the restrictions on and off, so
that if you want to keep them from surfing instead of composing, you can Restrict All.
When they need to use the web, change it to Unrestricted or Approved Only.
From either the Manage Website Access or Manage Student Applications button on
the vertical toolbar, click the plus sign to add a site or application to either the restricted
or approved list. Type in the URL or application name and click OK. From the options
across the bottom of your screen, select Unrestricted, Approved Only, Block Restricted,
or Restrict All.
The student will see a message that restrictions are on. Should they try to access a
restricted site, the computer will beep and inform them that site is restricted.
Interactive Whiteboard
A full screen Interactive Whiteboard is provided, enabling the instructor to use
SchoolVue’s annotation tools to highlight the screen and show the results to a selected
group of students.
To switch to Whiteboard mode, click the Whiteboard button on the bottom of the Vertical
Toolbar. Note the options across the bottom of your screen.
