Dear Members of the Burwood East Primary School Community,
School Fair
What a fantastic day for our School Fair - warm sunshine, heaps of visitors, and so much to see and do. Congratulations to
Mel Rosso for coordinating the event, PFA, school staff, members of the school council and community members for making
it work so well.
The support of the community was outstanding and students really seemed to enjoy themselves.
A special thank you to our major sponsor Jellis Craig without their support the day would not have been such as success.
Also thank you to all the businesses and families that donated goods or time. Without you the School Fair could not happen.
THE NEW VICTORIAN CURRICULUM
Recently, I attended an Education Department briefing outlining the new direction for State Education. As you know I have
taught for many years under many governments and seen many changes over the years. Some have had an extremely positive impact on our schools and the students we support while others less so. I left this briefing with a real sense that this
government is committed to a high level of support for schools, particularly for teaching and learning. The current State government has committed a significant amount of extra money to all schools, and also to address disadvantage so all children
have the optimal opportunities when at school. There is considerable information becoming available over the next few
months. One of the changes is the new Victorian Curriculum provides a stable foundation for whole school curriculum and
assessment. Much of AusVELS remains but The Victorian Curriculum F-10:
Is a public commitment to the learning that is valued by the community
Defines what it is that all students should have the opportunity to learn as a result of their schooling, set out in a series
of learning progressions
Incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian standards and priorities
Is structured as a learning continuum
We will be working at BEPS to look more closely at the relevant documentation in line with our school’s practices as we plan
for 2016. I am particularly happy to see the ‘Capabilities’ areas that very much support our students to become global citizens and 21st century learners. These already link closely to many of our practices at BEPS.
Planning 2016
If your child is leaving our school next year please let the office know. This will save us many hours of additional work and
ensure that we can build our grades in the best way for a successful 2016.
Even if you are not sure, please let me know about this possibility so that it can then be factored into the planning.
2016 Day
On the 8th December, we will hold a very special day for all of our current Foundation to Five and new Foundation students
as they are provided with the opportunity to spend the entire day with their 2016 class and their 2016 teacher. Having the
opportunity to familiarise yourself with a new environment, meet your new teacher and class friends is an opportune time
for the students (and families) to alleviate some of the issues experienced when children are required to move from one
classroom or school to another. This day has previously been an enormous success and I look forward to receiving some
feedback from the teachers, students and parents.
2016 Student Leaders
Best wishes to all of the current Year 5 students who have recently nominated for the various Student Leadership positions
for 2016. The students will begin preparing their speeches as to why they should be elected as one of our school leaders.
School Captain speeches will be conducted at our school assembly on the 30th of November and House Captain speeches
will be presented to House teams on December the 2nd. Leaders of our school are voted on by the student community.

LATENESS TO SCHOOL
This term we have been fortunate enough to have quite a number of lovely spring mornings to start our school day but it is of
considerable disappointment that we again have the need to remind parents and children of the importance of being at
school just before 9am, ready for a smooth start to the school day. We realise there are occasions when lateness can’t be
avoided but there are a small number of children who arrive late day after day. This impacts significantly on their learning and
teachers instructional time as they begin the day. It is our responsibility as adults to set an example for our children and follow
through diligently. For many children it only means heading off to school five minutes earlier and making this the habit.
Parent Opinion Survey
Parent Opinion Survey: at the beginning of term we received feedback from the Department of Education and Training (DET)
in relation to our 2015 Parent Opinion Survey. In July, a randomly selected group of parents was invited to give their confidential responses to a wide ranging series of questions about their child’s school and the quality of education that is provided for
them.
We greatly appreciate the thoughts and words that formed part of the feedback for our school and we have taken on board
some suggestions already.
Parking
Front of School
Thank you to everyone for NOT parking in there. This is in the interests of safety for our students, so we really appreciate your
support.
Long Service Leave
I would like to inform the community that I will be taking some LSL for the last three weeks of this term. During my absence
Sue Varey will be acting principal.

AWARDS
Principal Awards
As Principal, I ensure that I am involved in the learning process as much as possible and as such strongly encourage all
students to share their work with me in my office. Those who receive a Principal’s Award have their names and the reason
why they received an award printed in the school newsletter. This is something I thoroughly enjoy as do the children and their
families.

Banking Update – Please Read
Following the decision last
month to recall the Cosmic
Light Beam Torch due to a potential safety issue, a decision
has been made to also withdraw the upcoming Lunar Light
Band reward from the School Banking Rewards Program.
To avoid disappointment there is a new reward item available for redemption in Term 4 while stocks last. Students can
now test their skills with a game of frisbee with the new
Galaxy Glider!
Once students have collected 10 tokens, they can simply
include a note, along with their 10 tokens in their deposit
wallet on banking day to advise that they would like to redeem their tokens for the Galaxy Glider reward item.
Don’t forget the Outer Space Savers Money Box is also
available in Term 4.
Our school banking day is Tuesday weekly—don’t forget to
bring in your deposit books.

Spring Fair!!
THANK YOU !!!!
Planning started last year for the Fair and to walk around on Saturday and hear the music & screams of delight
and to see the smiling faces of our children and our smiling, chatting community made all the planning worthwhile. While the Organising Committee was pivotal to the preparations of the Fair we were delighted by the ever
increasing input of our school community. The BEPS community continues to strengthen and evolve and it is community events such as the Fair that give us all the opportunity to assist where we can; be it through the donation
or items, or of our time, this year has been as awesome response by our community.
We have many thank you’s
Thank you to all the families of BEPS and our wider community who donated chocolate, lolly jars, plants, books,
hamper items and wine. We have had such a successful fair and it comes down to the generosity of our community.
Thank you to all the businesses that donated to our raffle and silent auction, and those that donated lollies and
food. These are our local businesses, make a note of who they are and visit them; support our local community
businesses as they support us at Burwood East Primary School.
Thank you to all the people who donated their time helping out on stalls for the day. It was lovely to see so many
parents and students, both present and past, assisting on the day. We hope you enjoyed your shift and had the
opportunity to meet some other parents of the school. Without your assistance we cannot plan to have these
stalls, without people to serve - the stall is nothing, so thank you for your assistance, you made it possible.
Thanks to Kevin, Jay, Deano, Blake, Johnny, Haysey, Cam, Matt, Zoran for the early morning setup work, you
guys were awesome. And to all those people who helped pack up Thank you so much. In the packup effort I did
not see who was actually there but you are all fantastic and much appreciated, after a long day of the Fair it was
so lovely to have extra people assist us to pack it up.
Thanks to Mrs Brouwer and Mr Sahlstrom for their generosity of spirit and preparedness to be SLIMED! This was an
awesome fundraiser and the children loved it!
Thank you to our local sport clubs who came and set up lots of fun free activities for the children to participate
in. The East Burwood RAMS Jnr Football Club, Nunawading Basketball Club, Tally Ho Tennis Club, Holy Xavier Netball Club, & Joon No Taekwondo all offer fantastic opportunities for our children to get outside and enjoy exercise and sport as both an individual but also as a part of a team.
Thanks to our wider community – our performers & musicians, Forest Hill College, Glendal & Benwerrin Kinders
for participating, it’s always great to be able to highlight the wonderful learning environments that surround
BEPS.
And how great were our BEPS Factor performers. Well done to you all on a wonderful presentation. We will capture your BEPS Factor experience in our next BUZZ.
Thank you to our office staff Vikki, Katherine, & Maria for putting up with us crowding into your inner sanctum.
For the printing, the photocopying and the laminating. Thank you for putting up with all our emails and phone
calls. We greatly appreciate your assistance.
We give a big Thank You to Mr McDonald. He trusted us as a Community to organise a fun, interactive Fair that
our children enjoyed and we appreciate his faith in us to get the job done.
Thanks Lil for your beautiful artwork; Thank you Poppy and her crew, for the delicious souvlaki stall and all its’
donations, Thank you to Cheryl & Wendy for Cakes and Devonshire Tea, Cheryl’s homemade scones were delicious. Yum! Thanks to Maria Tymms for her tireless dedication to our gardens, sustainability and for organising
the plant stall. And thanks to the teachers for running our ticket booth.

Spring Fair!!
THANK YOU !!!!
And finally, a huge thank you to the organising committee for their dedication and time committed to making the
Fair the day it was. We had a lot of laughs along the way and welcomed new faces to the organising committee
this year and are excited to see it grow.
Thank you to Amie, Cheryl, Donna, Gill, Gabes, Karen, Louise, Mardi, Maria, Nhung, Niki, Sandie, Spring. What an
amazing team. Our intention was to have a Fair that everyone could enjoy and our children would remember, and
I believe that we achieved that goal. Well done on creating a wonderful day for our children to enjoy and thank
you.
Thank you to everyone in our BEPS community for your contribution
