Farewell from Anne Rightford
After many wonderful years at Chilton, I bid
you all a fond farewell.
Aimee Richards began her new role as
Head of Preschool on Monday. I have had
the pleasure this past week of handing over
our Preschool to a lovely lady who I know
parents and staff will enjoy working with.
I will be leaving with wonderful memories,
I thank you for your support during my time
at Chilton and wish our gorgeous girls and
boys all the best for the future!
Greetings from Aimee Richards, New Head of Preschool
What a fabulous week we have enjoyed in the Preschool as we head
into the Easter break. We have experienced pockets of sunshine outside
and the children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt which was facilitated by a
group of enthusiastic Year 13 students. I have had a wonderfully positive
and informative induction into my new role as Head of Preschool this
week. I have joined the Preschool to discover a vibrant educational
setting with happy and engaged learners. It has been re-affirming to be
warmly welcomed by a professional and dedicated teaching team and
supportive parent community.
I would like to thank Anne Rightford for providing a smooth handover as
she has shared her wealth of knowledge and time with me. Anne will
continue to be a familiar face in the Preschool as she has agreed to join
our relievers list.

We wish all our students and their families the blessings of Easter. We
hope you all enjoy some rest and relaxation during the holiday break

Term One Final Performances and Reflection
Term One finished on a wonderful high note with a series of beautiful performances and occasions. Following on from our
outstanding Years 7 – 10 production of Beauty and the Beast, there have been a number of concerts that have highlighted our
many talented Music and Performing Arts students and groups.
The Chilton Dance Centre LA Tour Variety concert last Sunday afternoon featured a range of outstanding Dance items along
with a number of beautiful musical Items. The Seraphim Choir was proud to be able to support this event and opened the
concert with an impressive performance of three pieces.
Seraphim Choir and Inspirare Choir Combined Concert: Last Sunday evening Seraphim once again performed, this time

PRESCHOOL NEWS
The Kea Preschoolers have had a great time playing with water
while learning about volume (displacement). The children
worked with coloured water while exploring the concepts of
volume and displacement. They filled up a small container with
water and then dropped rocks in and watched as some of the
water spilled out. In small groups they talked about how the
water overflowed. They learnt about measurement and volume
vocabulary (full, half and quarter) while they played with the
water and containers. Below are some of the comments the
children made while playing with the water:
"Look the water is fall out."
"Water would splash out and we will get wet."
“Pass me the rock I want to make the water come out now.”
“I took out the rocks and the water was nearly all gone!” (from
the bowl).
Here is what the girls had to say:
The bill to law system is very complicated and takes a long time
(Grace Doddrell)
The process of becoming Prime Minister can be a long journey
(Pippa King)
We enjoyed gaining knowledge about the governmental system
(Sienna Rusling)
I loved learning about and seeing the portraits of the past Prime
Ministers (Gracie Thompson).

On Tuesday the Years 5 and 6 classes visited Parliament. This
was part of our Inquiry into Where We Are In Place And Time.
We had the opportunity to listen to Trevor Mallard talk to us
about his time in Parliament. We also had a tour of Parliament
buildings, including the Debating Chamber and had an
explanation about how a Bill becomes law. The girls asked
many questions about how the system of Parliament works.
However, the biggest question that the girls came away with
from this trip was, “Why has the country that was the first in the
world to give women the vote, only had two female Prime
Ministers?”

Stowe 1 Form class have found very inventive and captivating
ways to read the Daily Notices over the last few weeks. It
started with Jess standing on a chair and reading them out with
a lot of passion. We had Emilie doing charades and Caitlin
drawing the notices on the board. Grace did them in a yoga
position and Elizabeth amazed us all by doing a handstand and
managing to read them to the class. Hollie sang them and
Radhika walked backwards around the room. Radha was on
another student’s back and Madeline managed the splits.
Others have skipped, walked and everyone has risen to the
challenge! It has always been fun and a great way to listen to
the many activities going on at Chilton each day.

SECONDARY NEWS
Chilton Visits the Pop-up Globe in Auckland
(Report from Mrs Jane Parish, HOD English)
As an English teacher, I often field questions from students and
parents, asking why we cannot study something more recent or
relevant. Many times, when I stand enthusiastically in front of
my class, to let them know we are going to explore what this
very dead and old white bloke called William Shakespeare
thought about life, the response is groans. This is why it is vital
that our students get to experience Shakespeare’s works in the
flesh – literally!

So, last October, when the Pop-up Globe announced it was
returning in 2017, in a bigger and better location, I knew I had to
take as many of our senior students as possible to see what all
the fuss is about. And, we were enthralled.
On Monday, 14 senior English students and accompanying staff
flew to Auckland for a schools’ performance of one of
Shakespeare’s great tragedies, Othello. We were going to
experience being a groundling, standing for the entire
performance, with our noses pressed to the stage. We were in a
replica of the English Globe that was rebuilt late last century,
and here we were in Auckland, New Zealand.
The cast comprised experienced New Zealand actors as well as
international ones. Months of work on set construction,
costuming, directing has resulted in a very sleek, incredible
experience.
Right from the incidental music that played while the audience
took their places, we were entranced. Live Shakespeare in a
replica setting means the audience is an integral part of the
performance.
Many of our girls were eyeballed by an actor, who talked directly
to them while in role. Actors and the action wove in and out of
the audience. Some of us were ‘showered’ with drink during the
scene where the soldiers carouse, celebrating their victory over
the Turks. London-based actor, Haakon Smestad’s, who played
the villain, Iago, eyes pierced us to the core. As Mrs Hambidge
noted, the actors could command the entire audience with a
look. We found ourselves dancing, laughing, and our hearts
breaking as the words and the actors moved us. Such a shared
experience is difficult to encapsulate in words. My advice is go
see one of the shows. The season has been extended to midMay because it has been so popular. Watching the DVD is not a
suitable option compared with living, breathing and seeing
Shakespeare performed live. Ben Johnson was right when he
said Shakespeare was not of an age, but for all time.
Waterpolo
Asia Beck was named the Most Improved U14 Player and
Sophie Smith was named the Most Improved U16 Player at the

Wellington East – Thursday 13 April at 8.30pm at WRAC. All
spectators welcome!
