FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT March 22, 2015 – 8 and 11 am WELCOME TO OUR SERVICE THIS MORNING If you are a first time guest, we want to extend a special welcome. We are honored to have you with us this morning and pray that you will be blessed by our fellowship and the Word of God that is shared. If you do not have a church home, we ask that you consider becoming a part of our fellowship. Please fill out one of the cards in front of you, and note the information regarding communion participation on the back of it. We pray that you will join us again soon. If you are a member or frequent guest, we appreciate your faithful encouragement in our worship and walk in the Lord. If there is someone sitting around you that you do not know, please be sure to introduce yourself; they may be a member that you have not previously met or a guest who would welcome your warm friendliness. TO PONDER, AS WE GATHER FOR WORSHIP: Like James and John, there are times when we would selfishly like Jesus to do whatever we ask of Him. Our old, sinful selves still sometimes want Jesus to be like a genie who will give us three wishes rather than a Lord and Savior who has forgiven our sins. As Lent draws to a close and we approach Holy Week, today’s readings from Holy Scripture remind us that as Jesus was appointed to be the Servant of all, giving His life as a ransom for many, so He has appointed us to serve others with the forgiveness of sins and the love He has for us. Today, God calls us to reflect on the ways we have served well and faithfully, and also to consider if there are new ways to which He is calling us to serve our neighbor in the Spirit of our Servant–Lord. ANNOUNCEMENTS and GREETING OF THE PEACE OPENING HYMN: “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” LSB # 425 TODAY'S ORDER OF SERVICE CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION: please STAND as you are able The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their baptism. P: In the Name of the Father and of the [T] Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: AMEN. Our help is in the name of the Lord, WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH. If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? BUT WITH YOU THERE IS FORGIVENESS; THEREFORE YOU ARE FEARED. Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, (and) call upon Him in prayer and praise, (and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ) in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. ALMIGHTY GOD, HAVE MERCY UPON US, FORGIVE US OUR SINS, AND LEAD US TO EVERLASTING LIFE. AMEN. Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. AMEN. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you that your sins are forgiven in the Name of the Father and of the [T] Son and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN. 3 LENTEN HYMN: “Not All the Blood of Beasts” LSB # 431 SERVICE OF THE WORD SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY: P: The Lord be with you. C: AND ALSO WITH YOU. AMEN. READINGS FROM HOLY SCRIPTURE FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Jeremiah 31: 31 – 34, page 837 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put My law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” 31 R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: THANKS BE TO GOD. EPISTLE LESSON: Hebrews 5: 1 – 10, page 1,278 1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He can deal gently with the 4 ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not exalt Himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by Him who said to Him, “You are My Son, today I have begotten You”; 6 as He says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” 7 In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to Him who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. 8Although He was a son, He learned obedience through what He suffered. 9 And being made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.. R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: THANKS BE TO GOD. SPECIAL LENTEN VERSE: please STAND as you are able 5 HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 10: 35 – 45, page1,077 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter. C: GLORY TO YOU, O LORD. 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to [Jesus] and said to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37And they said to Him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 36 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42And Jesus called them to Him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43But it shall not be so among you. Instead, whomever would be great among you must be your servant, 44and whomever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST. 6 CONFESSION OF OUR CHRISTIAN FAITH: “Apostles’ Creed” Also found on the inside back cover of the hymnal, LSB ALL: I BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH. THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD. HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND SITS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY. FROM THENCE HE WILL COME TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD. I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE HOLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS, THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY, AND THE [T] LIFE EVERLASTING. AMEN. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” P: As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup: C: YOU PROCLAIM THE LORD’S DEATH UNTIL HE COMES. That self-giving is the model for our giving in all aspects of our lives – in our family, in our church, and in the world at large. But remember that even though Jesus does call us to follow His example in selfgiving, we can only do this if we are connected to His self-giving in faith. There is no charge for the tickets, but a free will offering will be taken to cover the cost of the meal. In order to know how many folks for which to prepare, please sign up that you will attend and choose which meat entrée you prefer. The choice will be lamb (which Jesus used) or chicken. The young people are selling Easter Breakfast tickets, and also have the sign-up sheet and the free tickets for the Seder in the second Narthex. It’s time to DIRECT your CHOICE DOLLARS through Thrivent. As a Thrivent member you have dollars to direct. As your Advocate for Faith Church, I would like to encourage you to do this before March 31st. As of March 2015 over $11,000 has been directed to Faith Church by Thrivent members. Remember, Choice Dollars can be directed to your congregation and are intended to be a benefit for the church replacing Care in Congregations funds. I encourage Thrivent members to make sure to designate where you would like your $$$$$ to go. Don’t let this opportunity expire. For additional information see Rose Ann Verheyen or call 727-372-8840. I will be glad to help you with the process. You are able to direct you Choice Dollars by calling 1-800-847-4836 or visit Thrivent.com/thriventchoice. It’s as easy as that! NEWS FROM OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNUAL YOUTH EASTER BREAKFAST: Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for children. Ticket prices at the door are $12 for adults and $7 for kids. THE HUNT IS ON: Hey kids! Bring your friends and neighbors to the annual Easter Egg Hunt! We'll be meeting in Classrooms 1 & 2 at 10:00 am on Easter morning to get your Easter bag before the egg hunt begins. It's all free and ages 3 through 6th grade are invited to participate. You won't want to miss this! EASTER BASKETS: Our Sunday School staff is preparing 225 Easter baskets for needy children in three of our area elementary schools as a community outreach program. We are in need of Easter grass and prewrapped candy to fill these baskets. If you can help, please put your donations in the decorated boxes in Narthex II or in our Christian Life Center. The DEADLINE IS NEXT SUNDAY to allow enough time to get the baskets filled and delivered to the schools before Easter. We thank you in advance for all of your help in making this a very special Easter for many children. God bless you! PALM SUNDAY: Our Sunday School children will be participating in the 11:00 am worship service on Palm Sunday. Please share their joy as sing their praises in costume. A "must see" for all. 12 ALTAR FLOWERS: We have a new flower chart, and it has plenty of dates available for you to reserve flowers for your special occasions. This is a great way to beautify our altar area during the service, as well as bringing joy to a shut-in after our worship is over. ALTAR GUILD: The Altar Guild meeting and “Spring Cleaning” is scheduled for Saturday, March 28th at 9:00 am. So ladies, bring your pails and elbow grease and plan for a morning of polishing, and most importantly, a time of fellowship with some of your Sisters in Christ. The Altar Guild duties include caring for our place of worship, and preparing for the services in order to glorify God and morally uplift the worshippers who have been to the house of God to hear His Word. Everyone as members are offered the opportunity to serve in this spiritual commitment. The primary purpose of the Altar Guild is to help enrich the liturgical life of the congregation, a mission to serve the Lord. Please call Freda Steinke at 376-4588 or Mary Oles at 845-7689 if you feel that God is calling you to serve in this vital ministry. You will surely feel the joy of knowing you are serving God in a way that brings Him glory as it enhances the worship experience for both members and visitors alike. 13
