Presidential Address 2015
Engineering is a virtuous profession. In our hands it
has the power to create wealth or to destroy it, and
the gift to generate joy or to deny it. This is a power
we must use wisely if society is to prosper.
Engineers literally change people’s lives.
Engineering enables us to eat, sleep, travel and
even simply sit – not that any engineer would just
spectate. Collectively, we must rewrite the epitaph of
the common engineer: “much endeavour, little glory”.
Engineers have a great deal to offer society and
should be respected for it.
