TEKS Based Lesson Plan Subject: 4th Grade Math Weeks: 3rd Nine Weeks Group 2 Unit of Study: Geometry: 3D Shapes Essential Questions: 1. What is the difference between 2D and 3D geometric figures? 2. What are the attributes of 3D shapes? TEKS/Essence Statements: 4.8) Geometry and spatial reasoning. The student identifies and describes attributes of geometric figures using formal geometric language. The student is expected to: (A) Use essential attributes to define two- and three- dimensional geometric figures. Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals: This section needs to be completed based on the students in your class. Instruction/Classroom Activities: Small Group Instruction: • The teacher will show the students the following song by Harry Kindergarten 3 D shapes I know (songs for kids) on YouTube. • The teacher will show the students the following shapes sphere, cylinder, cube and a cone. • The teacher will discuss the attributes of each shape. • The teacher will then present a Birthday hat • The teacher will hand the birthday hat to a student and ask them to place that item by the correct 3D shape. • The teacher will continue to present various objects and have the students match them to their correct 3D shape. • The teacher will show the students the following song by Harry Kindergarten 2D shapes I know (Songs for kids) on YouTube. ü The teacher will show the following shapes square, circle, triangle, and rectangle. ü The teacher will discuss the attributes of each shape. ü The teacher will then present the following objects: ü The teacher will hand an object to the student and ask them to place that item by the correct 2D shape. Stations/Centers: Station 1: File folder on 3D and 2D shapes. Have the student sort them accordingly. Station 2: Provide a bin with a variety of shapes. Have students sort the shapes (i.e. put all spheres together; put all cubes together, etc). Station 3: Provide magazines or pre-cut pictures of different objects and several sheets of blank paper with the names of 3D shapes (i.e. sphere, cube, cone, etc.). Have students cut pictures or sort pre-cut pictures and glue under the correct label. North East Independent School District TEKS Based Lesson Plan Individualized Communication Planning: This section needs to be completed based on the individualized communication needs of the students in your class. Differentiated Tasks: Level 3 Students will determine which 2 dimensional shape each 3 dimensional object represents. Level 2 Students will identify which 2 dimensional shape each 3 dimensional object represents. Level 1 The student will acknowledge the different shapes. Materials/Resources: • Computer • Sphere, cylinder, cone, and a cube • Magazines • Square, circle, triangle and a rectangle. • 3 dimensional objects Assessment Strategies: This section needs to be completed based on the strategies appropriate for the students in your class. IEP Connections: This section needs to be completed based on the IEPs documented in the students’ ARDs in your class. North East Independent School District
