Key Learning – Unit 1 – Programme Music
Programme music is music that tells a story and sometimes suggests visual images. The descriptive idea
or story-line is known as the programme.
Musical motifs or themes are used to represent a certain character, mood or emotion.
Sometimes composers give their compositions a programmatic title – an example of this is Camille SaintSaëns ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ which describes the sound of a number of different animals.
