Christian Education Week May 1-5 Monday - Bring Nickels Tuesday - Bring Dimes Wednesday - Bring Quarters Wednesday - Chapel Group Soccer Tournament Wednesday - Christian Book Fair Thursday - Bring Loonies Thursday - Christian Book Fair Friday - Bring Toonies Friday - PJ Day Friday - Movie Afternoon PAGE 2 GOD MOMENTS: Kindergarten: We spent much time preparing for Grandparents and Friends Day before the Easter break. While waiting for our turn to present our song, one of the students spontaneously started singing "Jesus Loves Me." The other students joined in and they continued to sing until it was time to go into the gym. The performance was incredible and gave me "goose bumps" listening to them sing "Were You There." It was a Holy Spirit moment, and we are convinced Jesus is well pleased with them. Grade 1A & 1B: For the twelve weeks leading up to Easter, Grade One students worked to prepare their Resurrection Lapbooks as they grew their knowledge of the events surrounding the Easter story. On Grandparents & Friends Day, students had an opportunity to share their knowledge using their lapbooks for morning devotions. It was a beautiful thing to listen in on the meaningful discussions and observe the interactions between students and their grandparents/friends. Grade 2A: Grandparents Day was definitely a highlight for our class. It was such a privilege to have so many grandparents and friends visit our class for the morning. We enjoyed learning about them as we did our interest surveys. The visitors also helped each student make an Easter basket. These baskets will be good reminders of our special time together. Grade 2B: I had the very special honor of participating in the traditional Grandparent and Friends day this year at MHCS. It was an excellent event and I was happy to help 2B spend some quality time with their Grandparents and Friends. The grade 2's did an amazing job during the concert. We also had some fun learning about our guests and making origami keepsakes in the morning. Outside I saw everyone laughing and having good quality time with their guests on the playground. It was so rewarding to hear all the compliments at the end of the day and to meet all the wonderful people in my students lives. Friday May 5 PJ Day Grade 3A & 3B: April ended with an entire week focused on an unplanned theme: Acts of Kindness. One girl in Grade 3 brought up an idea for a service project. She wanted to recognize acts of kindness that are done by students in our classroom. This quickly snowballed within our classroom into a service project for all elementary students during recesses by giving small notes of encouragement to people who were “caught” in an act of kindness. The next day we read a book about planting seeds of kindness, and the following day, the Grade 1s taught us about Image Reflecting during chapel! We were blown away by the strong Image Reflecting in Grade 3 as we finish out our through-line theme for the month. It truly was a transformational topic for these students. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35 & Afternoon Movie Grade 4: Over the Easter break, I had the opportunity to travel to Eastern Canada with 18 members from the MHCS community. It was at Niagara Falls where we witnessed an impromptu performance by a Japanese Choir. At the insistence of the director, we called for an encore performance. Much to our surprise, the choir started singing the hymn "How Great Thou Art," and to the astonishment of the choir, the 18 of us joined in. What a powerful moment. Total strangers, worshiping together; it is hard to describe, it was emotional and powerful. Many hugs and some tears were shed as we sang, what an amazing moment we shared in Gods presence. Gr. 6 class with MP Mr. Glen Motz Grade 9 Grad Friday, June 23, 2017 PAGE 3 GOD MOMENTS CONTINUED: Grade 5: It is a special time of year in Grade 5 when we begin our recorder unit in Music. I often check with the classrooms around us to be sure we aren't disturbing learning with our "noise" as we stumble through learning notes and discovering "squeaks". But as the weeks rolled on beautiful music began streaming from our classroom and I decided to sign up our class to perform a recorder song for Grandparents & Friends day. I discovered it was the first time recorders had been played on this special day which made it all the more rewarding when the students shined while playing for our guests. We truly made a "joyful noise" for the Lord. Grade 6A & 6B: The grade 6 classes had the privilege of a question and answer period with our MP, Glen Motz this month. The students wrote and submitted questions to be asked and we were so impressed with their thoughtfulness and the way their Christian Perspectives were naturally incorporated. It was encouraging to hear from our Federal representative about his stand on various issues, how his new job has impacted his life, and some of his testimony of how he came to know Christ in his life. What an exceptional group of young men and women we have the honour of teaching in Grade 6 this year! Junior High: Students in Grade 7 have been reading a story, as a class, about an enemy German soldier in World War II who was befriended by two British children. Through this story, students are learning that God loves everyone, and that we should also love our enemies, and that on the inside we are all the same and in need of compassion. It was such a great morning back after Easter Break, the students were so excited to catch up with each other and tell of their exciting activities. Our devotional that morning was from 1 Timothy 4:12 (The Message -Paraphrase) Don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young. Teach believers with your life: by word, be demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. Many of our students are involved in service projects at various churches, they give of their time to teach others dance, or spend time shooting hoops with students in younger grades. The grade 8s are demonstrating their love for Jesus by showing his love and telling others about God. Praise the Lord for their acts of service and may they be continue to serve as an act of worship no matter their age. A group of grade 9 students had the opportunity to travel to Quebec and Ontario over the Easter break and I was fortunate enough to have the privilege of traveling with them. Each evening before we headed off to our rooms the group got together in the lobby to end our day with devotions. I was moved to see the grade 9 students step up and lead devotions for the whole group even inviting our tour guide to join us during this time. Teens are often given a bad rap in our society but I am honored to say that I saw a group of young people willing to step out and serve our Lord.
