ANNUAL REPORT 2016
L ET T E R F ROM T H E A RC H B I S HOP
October 27, 2016
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
For nearly one million people throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic
Charities has become A Place of Mercy—a fitting theme for the following pages of
Catholic Charities 2016 Annual Report. By proclaiming this a Jubilee Year of Mercy,
Pope Francis has asked each of us to be the hands of God’s mercy in our often
violent and poverty-stricken world. Mercy can overcome any type of adversity and
instill hope for the future.
B L A S E J. C U P I C H
Archbishop of Chicago
“The people who cross the
thresholds of the doors to
Catholic Charities are
also invited to a place of
mercy—a place where
they can receive the help
they need to change their
lives forever.”
At the beginning of the Jubilee Year, the Holy Father requested that cathedrals and
churches around the globe open Holy Doors of Mercy that can be visited in every
diocese. A door is symbolic of a passage to something new, and opening a door
is an invitation to cross over, to enter a different space. By passing through a Holy
Door of Mercy, we are invited to enter a place where God’s mercy and mercy for
others shapes our hearts and our actions. By entering this new space, our lives and
the lives of those we encounter are forever changed.
In much the same way, the people who cross the thresholds of the doors to
Catholic Charities are also invited to a place of mercy—a place where they can
receive the help they need to change their lives forever. With more than 150
programs and 153 service locations throughout Cook and Lake counties, there are
many thresholds to be crossed, and many opportunities for lives to be changed for
the better. Every 30 seconds someone knocks on the doors of Catholic Charities,
and thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers, their knocks are always
answered with warmth, kindness, and concrete help.
With sincere gratitude I would like to thank Catholic Charities Board of Directors
and Board of Advisors, Junior Board members and the thousands of volunteers,
committee members, and donors throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, who
support Catholic Charities efforts through their generous service and donations.
A special thank you goes to our Catholic parishes, schools and institutions for their
dedicated support. I would also like to recognize the many government,
professional and social service organizations with whom we collaborate throughout
the year. Finally, I am particularly grateful to Monsignor Michael Boland and the
nearly 3,000 staff members of Catholic Charities for creating A Place of Mercy for
our neighbors in need.
May God bless you for your commitment to Catholic Charities and all those it
serves. With every good wish, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich

LET TER FROM THE PRESIDENT
October 27, 2016
Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,
This 99th year of Catholic Charities service to those in need has partially taken place
during the Jubilee Year of Mercy. When Pope Francis declared this the Jubilee Year of
Mercy, he did so with great hope that the power of God’s mercy could transform our
world. He humbly called on each one of us to reach out, embrace, and heal those
who are deeply wounded by poverty, burdened by sorrow, or surrounded by violence.
Catholic Charities mercifully heeds the Holy Father’s call, raising up our brothers and
sisters in need, and transforming the world…one person, one family at a time.

MICHAEL M. BOLAND
Administrator, President, and CEO
Catholic Charities
of the Archdiocese of Chicago
“Catholic Charities
program sites are safe
havens in desperate
areas, and our staff and
volunteers are truly
ministers of mercy...”
Pope Francis has used a powerful image of the Church as “field hospitals.” During
war, field hospitals are situated right on battlegrounds—close to the wounded who
need help. Similarly, as part of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic
Charities 153 service locations are very much like field hospitals, helping those who
are suffering, and often located in neighborhoods that have sadly become like real
battlegrounds, plagued with violence and despair. Catholic Charities program sites
are safe havens in desperate areas, and our staff and volunteers are truly ministers
of mercy, providing help through a hot meal, a bag of food, a place to live, the care
of a child or elderly relative, counseling, job training, or job placement. In total, nearly
one million people this year including seniors, children, teens, veterans, immigrants,
refugees, and anyone needing a helping hand, relied on Catholic Charities.
Catholic Charities programs are possible because of the generosity of our
supporters. I am very grateful to our devoted volunteers, board members,
corporate and government partners, private foundations, parishes, and individual
donors who help us remain a place of mercy in Cook and Lake counties. I would
also like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters for their prayers, advocacy,
and supplemental financial contributions during the Illinois state budget impasse.
Thus far, Catholic Charities has been able to weather the budget storm without
cutting vital services to fragile populations. As we look to the future, however,
it is imperative that our state leaders pass a budget immediately, and we continue
to ask for your prayers and support.
As we close our 99th year of service and begin preparations for our centennial
celebration, we know that it is truly a blessing that Catholic Charities has become
A Place of Mercy to those in great need. For nearly 100 years, Catholic Charities has
worked in partnership with faithful supporters to provide the transforming love,
compassion, and professional help needed to propel our brothers and sisters to a
new life—one filled with hope and dignity.
Sincerely,
Rev. Monsignor Michael M. Boland

OUR PROGRAMS
BECAUSE OF YOUR MERCY,
“There are things I don’t like about
my community. There are too many
drugs being sold, too much garbage
in the streets, and too many gangbangers killing kids. Peace Corner is
a safe place for me and my friends.
I like being here and I want it to stay
open for as long as possible.”

she is safe
Every three hours someone is shot in
Chicago. One of the most violent
neighborhoods in the city, Austin, is also
home to Catholic Charities newest
program, the Peace Corner Youth Center.
The center is one of the few safe places
for children in the neighborhood and was
in danger of closing when we welcomed it
to our family of programs.
More than 100 youth come to Peace
Corner for safety, to learn, to grow into
young adults in a community where sadly
too many children see their friends shot
and fallen into the darkness of gang life.
They find companionship and support at
the center. Without Peace Corner, many
of these children would be lost to the
streets. Catholic Charities expanded the
programming to include regular basketball
games and activities with the local police
district to foster trust, a youth job training
program, a summer camp, volunteer
tutoring and mentoring, and expansion
of the center’s computer lab and library.
The youth are resilient and determined,
and with Catholic Charities they have
found A Place of Mercy.

In times of desperation, Catholic Charities is on
the other end of the line, patiently listening to
stories filled with fear and uncertainty. The
Catholic Charities Homelessness Prevention Call
Center is a lifeline of Mercy to people living on
the edge. They call for any number of reasons – a
lost job, unforeseen medical bill, a personal crisis
– hoping that in their time of desperation we will
ensure they do not lose their apartment or home
and be forced to move to a shelter. They need
short-term help, they know within a month or two
they will be back on their feet and able to pay their
rent and utility bills. This year, the Notre Dame
Lab for Economic Opportunities studied the Call
Center and proved the assistance works. In fact,
when a person calls the Catholic Charities
Homelessness Prevention Call Center and
qualifies to receive short term financial
assistance to pay their rent or utility bills they
are 76% less likely to enter a shelter within six
months. The average amount of assistance
provided: $1,000. This small amount of funding
saves more than $20,000 in government funding
that is spent when a person enters a shelter.

At the House of Good Shepherd, women are
walking through the doors seeking A Place of
Mercy and comfort. Since 1867 the Good

and those suffering from abuse. When the Sisters
feared they could no longer provide the necessary
support to the women and children in their care,
they turned to Catholic Charities. This year we
welcomed the House of Good Shepherd to our
family of programs and sites. The women and
children now have access to Catholic Charities
wider breadth of programming specific for those
suffering from abuse, including legal assistance,
translation and interpretation, education, child
care, and financial management courses. The
women enter the shelter frightened, uncertain
of their future and leave healed and in recovery,
knowing they have the continued support of
Catholic Charities as they begin their lives free

LET TER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
October 27, 2016
Dear Friends of Catholic Charities:
This past year we have faced unprecedented challenges. As Catholic Charities
entered its 99th year of service to those most in need, the State of Illinois
budget impasse threatened to eliminate the most critical programs that
support thousands of people in need across the state. This financial crisis
has already caused an unthinkable 91% of state social service agencies to cut
services or close their doors.
T I M O T H Y J. R I V E L L I
Chair, Board of Advisors
“I can think of no better
way to live out a mission
of mercy than working
with and supporting
Catholic Charities.”
Through it all, Catholic Charities has remained a beacon of hope and A Place
of Mercy for those who had nowhere else to turn. With your support, Catholic
Charities has remained steadfast in its mission of helping those in need
regardless of race, religion or background.
Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. A Jubilee Year of
Mercy reminds us of our own personal vocation every year to live the
corporal and spiritual works of mercy. But how can we more fully respond
to this call of God’s Mercy in our lives? I can think of no better way to live
out a mission of mercy than working with and supporting Catholic Charities.
When we open our hearts to their work, we will encounter and be filled with
opportunities to respond to God’s call for Mercy.
Catholic Charities has come a long way in its nearly 100 year history, from our
roots of raising funds for the various Catholic social services and institutions
and serving as caretaker for orphans and unwanted children, to now
touching the lives of nearly 1 million of the most vulnerable in our
communities, including children and families, hungry and homeless,
seniors, veterans, and the immigrants and refugees.
With more than 150 programs at 153 locations throughout Cook and Lake
counties, Catholic Charities is truly A Place of Mercy throughout the
Archdiocese. We are intentionally in the most desperate communities, going
where God has called us to help those most in need, those most in need of
hope.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve with you and for your
support of Catholic Charities and its the staff of nearly 3,000. With your
support, Catholic Charities will continue to provide hope and mercy to those
we are called to help.
Sincerely,

ANNUAL REPORT 2016
BECAUSE OF YOUR MERCY,
For nearly a century, Catholic Charities has faced
many challenges and weathered the storms of
unpredictability. In fact, the agency was founded
in 1917 just weeks after the United States entered
the First World War. In partnership with friends
and supporters, we have overcome challenges to
help those most in need.
This past year we faced an unprecedented
challenge: the State of Illinois budget impasse.
Due to nonpayment on state-contracted
services, the impasse threatened to undermine
the decades of effective, impactful public-private
partnerships that help the most vulnerable of our
neighbors. In fact, 91% of social service agencies
in the state closed or greatly reduced
programming.
we kept hope alive
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago
launched the Keeping Hope Alive initiative in the
spring of 2016 to raise funds to sustain our most
at-risk programs and services.
In this year of Mercy, Catholic Charities was
blessed to have our supporters step forward with
commitments to meet this goal, as is reflected
in our financials. As the state budget is resolved,
funds raised during Keeping Hope Alive will be
transferred to our endowment to help ensure our
agency’s impact for the next century and beyond.
