About UPMC Horizon UPMC Horizon, a two-hospital system located in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, offers the resources and expertise of a large academic medical center in a community hospital setting. About UPMC Horizon Founded in 1906, UPMC Horizon is comprised of two hospital facilities in northwestern Pennsylvania — Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville and Shenango Valley Medical Center in Farrell — that merged in 1992 to form Horizon Hospital System. OUR COMMUNITIES Greenville campus The Greenville campus is a 114-bed facility (including 25 skilled nursing beds) located in the picturesque college community of Greenville, Pa. Although the Greenville campus is situated in this family-oriented community of approximately 20,000, it has a regional primary service area population of 250,000, which encompasses parts of seven counties in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. Shenango Valley campus The Shenango Valley campus is an 84-bed facility in Farrell, Pa., one of six communities that make up an attractive suburban area known as the Shenango Valley. The Shenango Valley facility is approved for osteopathic residencies in family practice, internal medicine, general surgery and orthopedics (shared program). Greenville Area Local residents feel safe in this small, family-oriented community because of its comfortable lifestyle and low crime rate. Greenville also offers many educational, recreational, and cultural amenities. Education Thiel College, a liberal arts college with approximately 1,100 students, is located in the heart of Greenville. Other college campuses within a 30-minute drive include Westminster College in New Wilmington, Grove City College, Allegheny College in Meadville, and the Shenango campus of Penn State University in Sharon. Many of these schools have postgraduate level courses as well as programs for advanced high school students. Recreation Greenville is part of the Lakeland Area, which features numerous recreational and fishing lakes including Pymatuning State Park, Conneaut Lake, Goddard State Park, and the Shenango Reservoir. Formal recreational and cultural programs are offered through the various schools as well as the YMCA at Greenville Recreational Center. A new recreational sports complex has dramatically expanded the availability of recreational facilities in the area. Shenango River Downtown Greenville Culture Thiel College is the center of Greenville’s cultural offerings, which include a community theater, a symphony orchestra, and a variety of courses for non-traditional students. Greenville has a public library and a variety of unique facilities including railroad and canal boat museums, a historical society museum, and a Great Blue Heron bird sanctuary. About UPMC Horizon Shenango Valley Area The Shenango Valley area consists of six smaller communities — Sharon, Hermitage, Farrell, Sharpsville, West Middlesex, and Wheatland — which, combined, make up half of Mercer County’s total population of more than 120,000. The Shenango Valley offers a similar array of educational, recreational, and cultural amenities on a slightly larger scale than those in Greenville, boasting several unique attractions including Buhl Farm in Hermitage (a public park) and Buhl Community Recreation Center in Sharon, which features an indoor pool and a variety of athletic programs. A branch campus of Penn State University, which offers the resources of a large university close to home, is located in Sharon. Shenango Valley public school districts include Hermitage, Sharpsville, Sharon, Farrell, and West Middlesex. Kennedy Catholic High School, a private Catholic high school, is also located in the Shenango Valley. Unique tourist attractions in Sharon include the “world’s largest” shoe store, candy store, and off-price fashion store, as well as the luxurious Buhl Mansion Guest House and Spa. Buhl Mansion Proximity to Metropolitan Areas Although Greenville and the Shenango Valley are far enough away from large cities to avoid the problems associated with metropolitan areas, interstate highways provide easy access to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Youngstown, and Erie for abundant shopping, cultural, or recreational activities. The Shenango Valley area is less than one hour away from the Pittsburgh International Airport and just over one hour from downtown Pittsburgh. Greenville is just over an hour away from Lake Erie and 90 minutes from Cleveland.
