What Do You like about Christmas?
A 2013 Pew Research poll asked people what they like or dislike the most about the Christmas holiday season.
Here's a list of what people most look forward to at Christmas time. As you look at the list, think about what you
like about the season.
1. 68 percent said spending time with family and friends
2. 11 percent mentioned religious services or religious reflection
3. 11 percent look forward to the Christmas "spirit" of joy and good will
4. 5 percent said music, decorations, and shopping
5. 4 percent look forward to the end of the Christmas season
Here's what the poll said we most dislike about the Christmas season:
1. 33 percent—the commercialism and materialism
2. 22 percent—the money and expense
3. 10 percent—the shopping and crowds
4. 5 percent—the hectic pace and bad moods of people
5. 2 percent—the pressure to go to church

Thought #36: Raise Children, Not Grass
There’s an old story about a man who got his neighbors angry when he
stopped maintaining his once lush lawn. When the man and his wife were
newlyweds, they moved into their house, and he painstakingly worked on the
landscaping. But when they started having children, less time was spend on
the lawn. Weeds overtook the grass. Bare spots began to appear where his
growing children would play tier regular kickball games with the other
neighborhood children. Once day his next door neighbor asked, “When are you
going to take care of that lawn of yours?” The active and involved father
quickly replied, “I’m raising kids, not grass.” We only have 1,440 minutes each
day. We choose to spend each minute doing something somewhere. During
the few fast and furious years you have your children in the house, why not
carefully invest as many of those minutes as possible in them, rather than in
things like long overtime hours at work, playing golf, or an time-consuming
pursuits? They can easily steal away the time you could be pouring into your
children.

Bible College Grant
The Missions Ministry is seeking to financially assist students from our church who are attending one
of our brotherhood Bible colleges. Some of the more prominent schools in our brotherhood are
Milligan College, Johnson Bible College, Kentucky Christian University and Cincinnati Christian
University. Currently, there are over 40 institutes of higher learning in our brotherhood. A complete
list can be found in the Directory of the Ministry. Our church office has a copy of this yearbook. The
reason this grant is limited to colleges within our brotherhood is due to the Bible courses that are a
requirement for graduation. These classes are taught and based on the Church of Christ/Christian
Church doctrine.
The grant is open to anyone attending one of our brotherhood colleges. The applicant must also meet
the following requirements:
-active member of First Christian Church of Malvern for at least one year
-full-time (12 hours or more) student
-approved by the elders
-completed at least one semester with a grade point average of at least 2.7
The amount of the grant per student varies. $4800 has been designated for the grant by the Missions
Ministry for 2015. The money will be equally divided between those who receive the grant.
Applications for the grant are available in the church office. Applications must be filled out annually.
Applications should be returned to the Missions Ministry via their mailbox in the office foyer by
January 1, 2015.
