RiskAdvisoryTeammemberstaketheinformationandmakeadecisionaboutwhatthenextstepsshould
be.However,reportingisthemostcriticalstep.
HowdoIknowifitisaRATissueorifitismoreappropriatelyhandledbyothercollege
resources?

astudent’sbehaviorcouldescalatetoviolenceorthreat,contactyoursupervisor,theVicePresidentof

Typically,behaviorsthatposeathreattoselforothersorthatcauseasignificantcommunitydisruption
qualifyasaRATreferral.
Threatstoselforothersoverrideconfidentiality.Neverpromisethatyouwillofferconfidentialityto
studentsduringaninitialRATreferral.Facultyandstaffarenotboundbyconfidentialityunlessthey
agreetoit.Counselors,however,bylawarerequiredtoprovideconfidentialitytostudentstheysee.If
youreferthestudenttoacounselorassurethemthatthecounselorwilltalktothemconfidentiallywithin
thelimitsofthelaw.

WenatcheeValleyCollegeexpectsallstudentstoconductthemselvesinamannerconsistentwithitshigh
standardsofhonorandgoodcitizenshipatalltimes.Studentswillalwaysconductthemselvesina

Studentsoftendisplaysuicidaltendenciesthroughwrittenassignmentsorinverbalconversation.These
expressionsshouldbetakenseriously,nomatterwhatthetoneofthecommunicationmaybe.Ifa
studentmentionshavingaplantokillhimorherself,havingtheavailablemeanstodosoorstatesthat
heorshehasmadeapreviousattempt,considertheseasredflagsthatthestudentisatriskofsuicide.

Verballyaggressivestudentsusuallybecomeverballyabusiveinsituationswhichtheyperceiveasbeing
beyondtheircontrol.Angerandfrustrationaredisplacedontoothers.Fearofrejectionandexpressions
ofrighteousindignationarefrequentlyassociatedwiththispattern.
DO:
• Allowthestudenttoventandtellyouwhatisupsettinghimorher.
• Talktothestudentinacalmvoiceandindicatetothestudentyouarenotwillingtoaccept
verballyabusivebehavior,i.e.,“Thewayyouaretalkingtomeisnotacceptable;Icannot
understandyouwhenyouarespeakingtomethatway.”
• Tellthestudentthatyourpersonalspaceisbeingviolatedandaskthestudenttopleasemoveback

Typically,thisstudentrequireslargeamountsofyourtimeandtendstotakeovercontrolofa

• Setlimitsontimeandsubjectmatter(whatyouwillandwillnottalkaboutwiththe
student).
• Letthestudentmakehisorherowndecisions.

Thedepressedstudentfrequentlygoesunnoticed.Thestudentoftenshowsamultitudeofsymptoms,e.g.,
lowself-esteem,feelingsofworthlessnessandinadequacy.Physicalsymptomsarecommonsuchas

Ifyouhaveeverexperiencedachallengingdisciplinarysituationinyourclassroom,youarenot
alone.Themajorityofstudentsactinanappropriateandrespectfulmanner;however,thereare
occasionswhenstudentswilltestthelimitsofacceptableclassroombehavior.
Studentconductthatsubstantiallyorrepeatedlyinterfereswiththeabilityofaninstructortoteachorthe
abilityofotherstudentstolearnisaviolationoftheWenatcheeValleyCollegeCodeofStudentConduct.
Theseexpectationsextendbeyondtheclassroomtofieldtrips,internshipplacementandother
off-campuscollegeactivities.
PracticalSuggestions
Modelprofessionalbehavior.Respondtoinappropriateremarksinaprofessional,maturemanner.Putdownsorwittycomebackstendtoescalatethesituation.
Confrontingadisruptivestudentcanbeanuncomfortableexperience.Ifastudent’sbehaviorobstructs
