The WaveJet line of stand-up paddleboards, surfboards and body
boards are driven by the California company’s innovative Power Pod
drive. This patented modular, clean energy power system utilizes
lithium-ion batteries to provide 20 pounds of thrust and speeds of up
to six knots. Riders can recharge the battery with a wrist controller
utilizing “Seatooth” technology to draw power from any conventional
electrical outlet. The drive also has an electronic switch that cuts the
power if the driver falls off. Fun for beginning and experienced surfers
and paddlers alike, WaveJets make great yacht toys. Complete
systems are priced from $4,395 to $4,845, or you can add a Power
Pod to a WaveJet-ready board for $800 to $1,450. www.wavejet.com

Two high-adrenaline vehicles in one, the new Quadski from Gibbs Sports Amphibians is the first
all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that converts to a personal watercraft (PWC). What’s more, the Quadski
tops out at 45 miles per hour both on land and at sea.
“There’s no competition that we’re aware of,” says Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins. “There’s nothing
that can do high speed on land and high speed in the water.”
Gibbs spent 15 years and millions of dollars developing the Quadski, now in production in Auburn
Hills, Michigan. The vehicle’s raison d’être is simple: “You don’t have to stop at the water if you’re
on an adventure,” Jenkins says.
As we discovered on the company’s off-road test track in Florida, the adventure begins when
you don a helmet and squeeze the Quadski’s throttle. It’s easy to drive on land; you simply
press a yellow button to move up through the five forward gears. Steering is similar to driving
an ATV, but Quadski’s ride was much smoother as we ran through tight S-turns, up steep dirt
hills and over a bumpy “rock garden.”
For me, however, the real thrill came when transitioning from land to water. I drove down a sand
ramp into a canal, waited until the Quadski’s composite hull began to float, then braked and pushed
the “Wheels Up” button. It took less than four seconds for the high-tech retracting suspension to
pull the wheels up into the hull. When I throttled up, the Quadski’s patented lightweight water jet
engaged, pushing it smoothly onto plane. It was the most stable PWC I’ve ever ridden, thanks to its
wide beam, yet I could still crank it into tight turns and spins.
The Quadski is classed as an off-road vehicle, but Jenkins says that a version that’s street-legal
in Europe should be available by the end of the year. www.gibbssports.com – Louisa Beckett
Ultra-Stable SUP
Borrowing a concept from ancient Polynesian paddlers, H2O Entertainment offers a customizable outrigger system that gives any Stand-Up
Paddleboard (SUP) added stability. Not only does the SideKick help
paddlers balance on their boards, but it also lets them transport other
sports equipment, such as diving, camping or fishing gear. “Scuba divers
can now leave the tank on the SUP and use a Hookah line to
descend underwater,” says company founder Lee F. Hudson.
“Fishermen now have no fear of being flipped over by
passing boat waves or being dragged far offshore
when hooked on larger fish.” SideKick outriggers
start at $599, plus shipping and handling.

Tender Diving
At first glance, the Belzona 325 catches the eye. The high-performance center console offers unobstructed views from the helm, a
reverse raked windshield and an open convertible layout that allows
for walk-around capability in its 10-foot eight-inch beam. But it was
only when I stepped aboard for a sea trial that I found the 325’s real
standout feature: Belzona’s patented sliding doors to port and
starboard. From amidships, the sides of the 325 slide back 40 inches
towards the stern, allowing for easy boarding and maneuvering of
diving equipment and of course, bringing in that prize-winning catch.
Each of the doors has an integrated pullout dive-style ladder built
into the hull’s sides for easy boarding from the water.
While sitting at the helm I was able to fully enjoy 360-degree
views thanks to a new style composite support system for the
hardtop; no metal piping blocks the view forward or aft from the
helm. Another element of note is that the Garmin equipment is

Getting in and out of a RIB can be more and more challenging the older one
gets. Enter Chapman. Taking the Chapman Transition tender out for a test spin
involved a pit stop; we pulled up to the beach to try out its “wow” factor, the
hydraulically operated bow ramp. With a flip of the switch, the bow smoothly
lowers, allowing easy beach landings. While initially conceived to ease use for
older passengers, the bow ramp makes the tender equally handy for superyacht
crew to unload beach barbecue gear and for scuba divers to get in and out of
the water with bulky gear on. It even makes the tender wheelchair-friendly. The
custom-built tenders are available in 22-, 25- and 28-foot versions. With myriad
options, including stern drive or outboard power packages and center console
configurations available, no two are exactly alike. As for the typical test, the
Chapman rides well on its deep-V hull coupled with RIB body and turns on a
dime. www.chapmantransition.com – RISA MERL

“Rubber” Racer
The latest incarnation of the high-style Pirelli
Pzero 1100 RIB is a twin-outboard version that
tops out at over 50 miles per hour. Beneath
its ingenious carbon-fiber hardtop, created
by Ocke Mannerfelt Design, the 1100 Open
features a console with digital control panel.
Full-length sunpads let two guests catch rays
aft, while additional sun-worshippers are
accommodated in the convertible bow cockpit.
Two refrigerators keep chilled champagne
at hand. A variety of options are available,
including custom color choices for the
water-repellent upholstery. The Pirelli Pzero
range is the result of a licensing agreement
between the global tire manufacturer and
Technorib. Denison Yacht Sales is the U.S.
distributor. www.denisonyachtsales.com;

Every inch of the new Chris-Craft Carina evokes retro
elegance, from the burgee on the bow to the ensign that flies
from its tumblehome transom. In between are dozens of fine
details, such as the radiused taffrail, stainless-steel engine
vents and custom mahogany wheel that belie this boat’s
production origins.
The Carina’s topsides are painted rather than constructed
with colored gel-coat. A new fabric called Silvertex vinyl
gives the upholstered seating in the bow and stern cockpits
a rich, textured feel.
Hull 101, which we “lake-trialed” on a very windy day in
Florida’s historic Mount Dora, was outfitted with just about
every option available, including the Heritage Trim Edition
Teak package, which made its retro look complete. But the
boat turned in a thoroughly modern performance, rising
smoothly onto plane without noticeable bow-rise and topping
out at around 46 knots even with the wind on its bow. On tight
turns, the Carina obeyed the wheel without hesitation or
cavitation. The windshield was raked at the perfect angle to
shield the driver from the breeze, and, to our surprise, the
boat stayed bone-dry throughout the entire test.
Interior appointments include a pop-up stainless steel ski
pylon and a ski stowage locker in the teak cockpit sole. The
rear sunpad hides an engine hatch that opens smoothly on
stainless steel gas shocks. The boat is offered with a wide
range of single Mercury and Volvo engines, including a
200-hp diesel.
The hull comes in a variety of colors, including Ivory Crème,
Seafoam Green and Palm Beach Yellow. For owners who want
their tender to match the mother yacht, Chris-Craft offers
custom colors as well.
“If you bring us any [Pantone] color number, we can match it,”
says Kirsten Pedersen, marketing manager.

stacked one atop the other so all the components are on the same
line of sight. Stacking the equipment also left room for a sliding
entry door into the head compartment below, which offers enough
space for a vanity and mirror with natural light filtering through
two portholes.
Fold-away forward and aft seating allows for easy maneuvering
around the cockpit while fighting fish and keeping dive equipment out
of the way. The leaning post aft of the helm includes a refrigerator
and freezer, tackle-stowage drawers and four rocket launchers.
As for performance, the 325 comes standard with twin 250-hp
Mercury Verado engines, but the builder offers other power options as
requested. For outfitting, the customer may pick and choose everything from head accessories to transom livewell configurations from

On the Right Track
French builder Iguana Yachts recently added the Iguana 24 to its line
of amphibious craft. It is quite fun to leave a black-topped parking lot
and drive down a boat ramp under the incredulous eyes of fishermen
who think they’ve seen everything. Rubber tracks move the craft on
land at a stately 4.4-mile speed, but enter the water and this hull
with a fine entry and deep V becomes alive with an exhilarating and
dry ride at speeds of up to 40 knots. After retracting the tracks,
which fold neatly alongside at the push of a button, our captain
directed our craft to a sandy embankment. The climb wasn’t effortless as the slope was steep and the sand soft, but our boat (a
prototype) finally came atop a beautiful stretch of beach, offering us
ocean views from our elevated viewpoint. The craft’s flexibility makes
it particularly attractive for owners of waterfront estates.
