Middle School Summer Reading Program and Book List

2017-­‐2018 Middle School Summer Reading Requirements Dear 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Parents and Students, Incoming 6th through 8th grade students are required to select one fiction book AND one non-­‐fiction book from the following reading list. These books are also AR books and the AR tests may be taken for AR points counting towards their first quarter goal. Incoming 6th through 8th grade students are required to complete one project for the fiction book they chose to read AND one project for the non-­‐fiction book they chose to read. The project selection is separated by grade level, so please make sure you choose one fiction and one non fiction project corresponding to the grade level you will be in for the 2016-­‐2017 school year. These projects will be presented to the class, and will count as the first two grades for first quarter. On a poster board, draw the body outline of your main character. Next to the different parts of the body, write the following information based on your main character: o Head-­‐ ideas your character had, eyes-­‐visions and hopes of your character, heart-­‐ feelings of your character, hands-­‐ what he/she did, biceps-­‐ his/her strengths, foot-­‐his/her weaknesses, ears-­‐ what advice he/she hears from others o The book won’t tell you all of this information exactly, you will need to process what you know about this character and draw your own conclusions. o Include the book title, your name, and the character’s name on the front of the poster as well. o All writing should be neatly done, or typed. Write a one to two page double spaced 12 point font, Times New Roman font, paper that includes the same information as above about your main character (What are there strengths, weaknesses, talents, ideas, visions, etc.) Use the following website to design 5 Trading Cards for 5 characters in your novel, You need to complete the information for both the front and the back for your trading cards. Be sure to write in complete sentences when necessary. Create a timeline including 8-­‐10 significant events in your novel. If dates are available, include them. If dates are not available organize the content into chronological order. You may computer generate the timeline, or draw it using a ruler. The timeline also needs to include pictures for at least 3 of the events that are either computer generated or hand drawn. Include your name and your novel title on the front of your timeline. Your timeline may be completed on computer paper, or neatly displayed on a poster. If you know how to use Prezi, you may also make the timeline with 8-­‐10 event and 3 pictures on Prezi. For the artistically talented students, create a series of 4-­‐6 neat drawings on a half piece of paper (glue the drawings to a poster board) that show 4-­‐6 significant events in your novel. Under each picture or cartoon write or type a few lines of explanation. (Colorful or Gray Scale). Create a Scrapbook for your novel. o Include a cover page that contains: the book title, your name, and the author’s name. The remaining pages should include a combination of text and pictures o Include one page devoted to identifying and describing the main characters ! Write a newspaper front page that is devoted entirely to the book you read. The front page should look as much like a real newspaper page as possible. The articles on the front page should be based on events and characters in the book you choose. There should be a minimum of three articles written by you as though you were a journalist. There should be at least two pictures, and the title of your novel, and your name need to be neatly included on the front of the newspaper. Create a Keynote/PowerPoint, or a Scrapbook Album focusing on the following literary elements: o Book’s Genre o Point of View o Main Characters (include a brief description of each) o Plot/Summary o Author’s Mood/Tone o Figurative Language Used o Be sure to also include a title slide or cover page that clearly states the novel title, the author’s name, and your name. ! Keynote/PowerPoint-­‐ Minimum of 7 slides ! Scrapbook-­‐ Minimum of 7 pages (Each page should include a combination of pictures and text) Develop a 2 page, 12 point Times New Roman font, double spaced paper that explains the changes that take place with one main character over the course of the novel you chose. Include the novel title and your name in the heading. Write a minimum 30 line poem summarizing the entire plot of your story. You can use any poetic elements you choose. Book Report—(Total 5 pages including cover page, table of contents, and 3 informational pages • Include a Cover Page that clearly states: Subject’s Name/Event, Your name, author’s name book title • Include a Table of Contents Page which provides an ordered listing of the pages that appear in your book with their headings. o Example: ! My Favorite Things……………….Page 2 ! Picture of My Birthplace…….…Page 3 • Include 3 additional informational pages o Pages should be a mixture of text and pictures ! Each page should include between 5-­‐10 sentences in addition to pictures. o Include any of the following for page ideas (Remember you only need 3 pages) ! For each page you may either simply list the information, or you may elaborate if you choose • Significant quotations • Magazine pictures or illustrations of this event/person • Descriptions/ Pictures of role models for this person • Advertisements relating to this person/ event • Names of songs, CDs, TV shows, movies based off of this person/event • Charts, lists, graphs, or maps if appropriate • List of greatest accomplishments or List of Outcomes caused as a result of this event • Another Idea you think of on your own !

Create a 3 Panel Double Sided Brochure (it will be a total of 6 panels-­‐3 on the front, 3 on the back) for your novel following the same information as outlined for the above Book Report (The only exception would be you do not need a Table of Contents Page for the brochure.) Record an iMovie using the same information outlined for the book report. (The only exception would be you do not need a Table of Contents Page for the iMovie). Record yourself dressed as a reporter, the main figure, or a witness to the event.
