ACADEMY
Congratulations to the
JMC Academy class of 2007.
In April, the JMC Academy celebrated the
inaugural graduation of its Sydney and
Melbourne Bachelor Degree students.
52 graduates in total were conferred their award by Chair of
the JMC Academic Board and Emeritus Professor, Professor
Randall Albury in the presence of their family and friends.
Personal achievement of a specialist degree qualification in their
chosen field was a proud moment, not only for all recipients but
also for their parents, partners and friends, who encouraged
pursuit of their dreams to enter the Creative Industries.
Having received his own Master of Recording Arts from
Macquarie University in 2007, JMC Managing Director Martin

Cass reflected on the merits of educational aspirations and
traditions, and commended the new graduates on the three
years of hard work that led to their academic success and
creative career prospects. He then took the opportunity to
warmly welcome the new graduates into the JMC Academy
Alumni, acknowledging that they had each earned a place in
the professional community of practice and the all-important
creative industry network “now and forever”.
On behalf of Martin Cass and all the staff at the JMC Academy,
we wish you all the very best that life and your chosen career
has to offer.
JMC Academy chosen by the MMF
to host series of industry leader forums.
Members of the Music Managers
Forum Australia (MMF Aust.) has
chosen the JMC Academy to host a
series of industry development forums.
The subsequent JMC Academy/MMF collaboration entitled
‘Death by Demo’ was held on Monday 2 June. At this forum,
talented artists were invited to submit a ‘demo’ for appraisal
by a panel of industry members (one of whom was the
JMC Academy’s very own Head of Entertainment Business
Management, Ben Steer).
The first forum “Eat my dust” was held on the 5 May and
featured a panel of industry heavyweights including Millie
Milgate ( Music NSW ), Emily Neilson ( Romantic Rock Booking
Agency ), Aaron Chugg ( Tour Manager ) and Stephen Wade
(Booking Agent ). Issues for discussion included ‘Getting a Gig’,
‘Approaching A Venue’, ‘Touring Tips’ and ‘Tour Budgets’.
Also on the Entertainment Business Management front, JMC
Academy third year students recently attended the ‘Bondi Youth
Wave’ music industry seminar held recently. The day-long event
featured keynote speakers such as Ed St John, Chairman,
Warner Music Australia, Sab Chase, Managing Director MGM,
Peter Paterson, Creative Director, Shock Music Publishing and
Russell Thomas, Managing Director, Kaos Publicity.
Rubbing shoulders with ‘Diesel’
Just another day in the life of a Popular Music and Performance
student at the JMC Academy.
The JMC Academy’s commitment to providing students
direct access to industry expertise and knowledge has never
been as obvious as it has been in the past three months.
Following the success of the Steve Seskin and Pat Pattison
workshops, we would now like to extend a great thank you to
the following guest lecturers for their continued support, wealth
of industry knowledge and commitment to the popular music
and performance programme at the JMC Academy. They also
rendered many of our students speechless upon entering the
classroom (often a seemingly impossible feat). They are:
Jim Moginie: Midnight Oil
Jim spoke on 14 March about his life as a composer and shared
his own techniques for writing and making money from writing,
as well as general music industry facts.
Steve Kilbey: The Church
Steve spoke on 18 April about how to compose a song, how to
work with directors when filming a music video and on contract
do’s and don’ts.
Diesel: Mark Lizotte
Mark spoke on 2 May about life as a vocalist. He too shared his
song writing techniques and discussed the implications of the
digital age, and use of the internet for self-promotion.

The Future Is Digital
By Stavros Halvatzis, JMC Academy Head of Digital Media and 3D Animation
In an increasingly visually orientated society such as ours, the role of digital image
creation, especially the 3D rendered image and sequence, is becoming all-encompassing.
The growing sophistication of programs such as Adobe’s
Photoshop, Flash and After Effects, Autodesk’s 3D Max, Maya,
and Combustion, are providing the digital artist with powerful
tools in his quest for digital perfection.
From 3D movies such as Shrek I, II, and III, Monsters Inc, and
Australia’s own Happy Feet, to advertising, medical imaging,
reconstruction and mining renditions (of specific procedures
used in training), the list of visually hungry industries is growing
larger every year. Joining this list is the discipline of architectural
visualisation in which homes and buildings are constructed
from 2D architectural plans to avoid unforseen aesthetic and
design problems later.
For those students studying a degree in 3D animation at the
JMC Academy, they are in fact being educated and trained in
a rich array of related visual techniques necessary for careers
in Web Design, Flash Animation, Games Design, Digital Matt
Painting and Compositing, and even Screen Writing, as well
as in character modelling, virtual set construction, texturing,
rigging, lighting, rendering and animation.
With such a thorough induction into the “digital world”, our
trained graduate professionals are in the best position to seize
opportunities afforded by the new and emerging technologies
which are increasingly defining our digitally enhanced world.
