S.E. Hinton S.E Hinton stands for Susan Eloise She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948. She started writing The Outsiders when she was 15 years old. The Outsiders was published in 1967. The Book - Setting It takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the Mid-1960’s. Hinton based the book on two rival gangs in her school, The Greasers and The Socs. What was life like in the 1960’s? There are three different types of narrators: First person narrative – when the story is told from the point of view of someone who is a direct participant in the story line. Ex: The Outsiders Second person narrative - when the story is told from the point of view of someone who is in the story, but is an observer of what is happening. Ex: ELF – The movie Third person narrative – when the story is told from the point of view of someone who is not involved at all, sometime told as if there is an all seeing being who is telling the story. Ex. Harry Potter Story Elements Introduction Where the story and the characters are introduced. The reader often finds out the setting of the story – where it’s taking place, when it’s taking place, etc. Conflict Where something happens in the story to increase the action. Usually between characters in the story. Story Elements Rising Action The action continues to rise as the story progresses. The conflict between characters continues, increases, and becomes more pronounced. Climax The moment of greatest suspense. Where the conflict that has been happening between characters comes to its highest point of action. Usually a great event happens of the climax of the story. Story Elements Falling Action The action continues, or decreases. It is heading to a final outcome or a conclusion. Final Outcome The author wraps up and finishes the action. Hopefully they tie up any loose ends so that the reader is not left wondering what happens and so that they will not be dissatisfied.
