Animo’y natalo at sawi. (Rev. Fr. Rendrix B. Rabago-Sambuhay) Lent 2015: Message of Pope Francis Make your hearts firm (Jas. 5:8). This is the title given by Pope Francis to his 2015 Lenten Message. Globalization of indifference is at the heart of his message: “Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each communities and every believer. Above all it is a “time grace” (2 Cor. 6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us. “We love because he first has loved us” (1 Jn. 4:19). He is not aloof from us. Each one of us has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us and he seeks us out whenever we turn away from him. He is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us.” Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure. Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. It is a problem which we, as Christians, need to confront.” “When the people of God are converted to his love, they find answers to the questions that history continually raises. One of the most urgent challenges which I would like to address in this Message is precisely the globalization of indifference.” Francis proposes for our Reflection three biblical texts: 1. “If one member suffers, all suffer together” (1 Cor. 12: 26) – The Church 2. “Where is your brother?” (Gen. 4:9) – Parishes and Communities 3. “Make your hearts firm!” (James 5:8) – Individual Christians “Dear brothers and sisters, the pope writes, how greatly I desire that all those places where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our communities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference!” ANNOUNCEMENT 1st SUNDAY OF LENT Launching of “My Lenten Sacrifice and Offering of Bottles”. We are now on the 1st Sunday of Lent and keeping in mind the three most important aid (PRAYER, FASTING and ALMSGIVING) in making our Lenten observance meaningful, the Parish is now launching “My Lenten Sacrifice and Offering of Bottles.” Every day, we can make our little sacrifices in order that others may live – and each time you give up on something like a cup of rice – which costs P10.00 – that corresponding amount of P10.00 will fill up your Lenten Bottle. In addition, each time you put-in your “alm” in the Lenten Bottle, think of one person you would like to offer your sacrifice and say a prayer. As you go on each day doing these little sacrifices – you will see your bottle filling-up and you will feel a certain joy, knowing that you are doing this, so that others may live. Reflection for Lent: What Are Alms? "Alms" are not some kind of tree, but something you should know about -- and do. The Greek word translated alms in the New Testament originally meant mercy or kindness, then came to represent the kind deeds caused by mercy and kindness. So it came to mean charitable giving to the poor -- or giving motivated by love. Many times this word is translated as "charitable deed." "Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. Jesus often spoke of giving alms. But He made it clear that our motives are important. "So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. The Bible tells of Cornelius, "a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always" (Acts 10:2), who had an angel deliver this message: . . . he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. God was impressed with this Roman soldier's giving to meet the needs of the poor. What he did got God's attention. Alms are not offerings to worship God, or support His ministers. Alms are charitable deeds -- gifts to the poor and needy. Helping people who are in trouble. Alms are important to God. They are an act of love. We are not made right with God by giving, or any works we do, but only through what Jesus did for us. But as children of God we should help care for others who God also loves. SAY THIS: Alms are gifts of love to help people in trouble.
