Uniform shirts are available for purchase in the SFS Spirit Shop. Companies such as Land’s End, Old Navy, The Gap and Bean Pole are also quality companies to purchase standardized dress items. Several of these stores, such as The Gap and Bean Pole are located in Seoul. Comparable clothes may be found in other stores in Seoul such as Shinsegae, Lotte, or Hyundai Department stores. Shoes need to be closed toed and a pair of athletic shoes must be kept at school for Physical Education classes. Sandals do not provide the safety children need for playing at recess or in physical education classes. Middle School Uniforms Middle School students must also adhere to a standardized dress code. White or red polo style shirts (short or long sleeved), khaki or black trousers, shorts, skirts, or skorts are acceptable. Only mostly black or brown closed-toed shoes are allowed. The uniform is available in a number of stores in the US and Korea as detailed above. High School High School students do not have a dress code except for the basic need to adhere to neat, clean, modest, and safe dress. Students are requested to NOT wear crop tops, tops with spaghetti straps, halter-tops, excessively tattered/torn pants, very short skirts or very short shorts to school. Family members rise early and put on their best clothes. The younger members bow to their parents and grandparents as a reaffirmation of family ties. Lunar New Year (Korean New Year) This is moving festival which is celebrated on the 1st day of the 1st month of the Lunar Calendar. March 1 Sam-il Day (Independence Movement Day) Korean’s observe the anniversary of the March 1, 1919 independence movement against Japanese occupations. Buddha’s Birthday Celebrated on the eight day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar. Solemn rituals are performed at Buddhist temples, and the day’s festivities end with a ‘Lotus Lantern’ parade. May 1 (Labour Day) This is not a government holiday, but some banks and businesses may be closed. May 5 (Children’s Day) This day is celebrated with various activities for children who spend the day with their parents. June 6 (Memorial Day) On this day, the nation pays tribute to its war dead. Memorial services are held at the National Cemetery in Seoul. 23 August 15 (Liberation Day) This day commemorates the liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945 as well as the establishment of the Republic of Korea in 1948. Chusok / Harvest Full Moon / Korean Thanksgiving Day This is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar calendar and falls in September/October. This is one of the most important national holidays in Korea. Most Koreans return to their hometowns during this holiday so traffic is unusually heavy. October 3 (National Foundation Day) This day marks the traditional founding of Korea by Tan’gun in 2333 B.C. December 25 (Christmas Day) 24
