Grade Boundary: Low Excellence
1.
To achieve this standard at Excellence the student needs to demonstrate perceptive
understanding of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant event in late
Republican Roman politics.
This is an extract from a larger submission of work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance.
The student demonstrates perceptive understanding of the significance of the collapse
of the first triumvirate. The student places the event in the socio-historical context and
makes valid points about the structure of Roman politics in the late Republic. The point
made regarding how Pompey’s marriage to Cornelia resulted in him being faction of his
own, acting as a mediator between the populares and the optimates, (1) shows insight
into why the event was significant. The student demonstrates perceptive understanding
of the outcome of the event such as Caesar crossing the Rubicon (2); they clearly
demonstrate their understanding of the cultural expectations and codes of behaviour
through to comments made about Caesar’s imperium. The student supports points
made with primary source evidence of specific relevance.
To meet a clear Excellence the student could:
 Demonstrate understanding of the limitations of sources.
 Further explore the reasons for the similarities and differences between the
treatment of Caesar and Pompey by the Senate.

Grade Boundary: High Merit
2.
To achieve this standard at Merit the student needs to demonstrate in-depth
understanding of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant event in late
Republican Roman politics.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance.
The student demonstrates in-depth understanding of Pompey becoming sole consul
and the impact of this on the first triumvirate (1). The student supports points made
with evidence of specific relevance. They give an informed explanation of the political
and social effects of Pompey’s law changes, particularly what the affect would be on
Caesar (2), and make some comments on what this event could have led to had the
civil war not ensued. The understanding of the impact of the event, leading to the civil
war between Pompey and Caesar, is insightful but could benefit from further
development in terms of the cultural expectations and codes of behaviour from each
faction.
To meet low Excellence the student could:
 Consider reasons for similarities and differences between the outcomes for the
optimates and populares.
 Explain with insight the significance of the battles on a range of aspects of
Republican Rome.

3.
To achieve this standard at Merit the student needs to demonstrate in-depth
understanding of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant event in late
Republican Roman politics.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student used supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance.
The student demonstrates in-depth understanding of the significance of the formation
and breakup of the first triumvirate (1). The student explains a range of factors
regarding the different rationale of the political factions. They confidently place the
triumvirate in context by giving an informed explanation of why it was important. The
student focuses this informed explanation on the reasons held by each member for the
formation of the triumvirate, with particular emphasis on Caesar’s desired agrarian
laws. The student makes some comments on Caesar’s reasons for defying convention
and taking his laws to the council of the plebs but tends make generalisations which
need further development.
To meet high Merit the student could provide more in-depth understanding of how the
triumvirate affected different political factions in a wider context.

Grade Boundary: High Achieved
4.
To achieve this standard at Achieved the student needs to demonstrate understanding
of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant moment in late
Republican Roman politics.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student used supporting primary source evidence and explained points in more depth.
The student demonstrates understanding of significance of the formation of the first
triumvirate (1) through their explanation of the reasons it was established and the effect
of its breakup. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some
comments explaining why the event was important. Comments regarding the reasons
individual triumvirs needed each other show some in-depth understanding but these
points need further development for Merit. The student makes some valid points which
explain why the reasons for formation lead to the eventual breakup of the triumvirate.
The significance of the event is explained but overall the work is lacking depth.
To meet low Merit the student could:
 Use primary source evidence of specific relevance to the context.
 Consider the implications of the significance of the triumvirate on a range of
aspects – such as social implications on the higher classes, impact on lives of
the Romans, expansion of the provinces – to give an informed explanation.

Grade Boundary: Low Achieved
5.
To achieve this standard at Achieved the student needs to demonstrate understanding
of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant moment in late
Republican Roman politics.
The student demonstrates some understanding of the significance of the first
triumvirate. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some
comments explaining why the event was important. The points made tend to have a lot
of information which is not relevant to the significance of the formation or breakup of
the triumvirate. However the student does provide an explanation of why the
triumvirate was significant to Republican politics (1). The student provides a great deal
of detail regarding the reasons why each triumvir entered into the arrangement
however this lacks explanation.
To meet High Achieved the student could:
 Explain the significance of the event more clearly.
 Consider the implications of the significance of the triumvirate on a range of
aspects – such as social implications on the higher classes, impact on lives of
the Romans, expansion of the provinces.

6.
To achieve this standard at Achieved the student needs to demonstrate understanding
of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant moment in late
Republican Roman politics.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student did not use supporting primary source evidence.
The student demonstrates limited understanding of the significance of collapse of the
first triumvirate. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some
comments explaining why the event was important, such as the death of Crassus. The
outcomes explained by the student are on a superficial level and lack explanation. The
points made regarding the historical significance of the collapse require further
development (1). Key historical events are mentioned detailing the formation, operation
and collapse of the first triumvirate but the student does not explain the significance of
these on later events or changes to the Roman constitution.
The work begins to place the triumvirate in context however there is insufficient
evidence to award an Achieved overall.
To meet Achieved the student could:
 Give more specific reasons why the event was significant.
 Explain why the event was important.
 Use primary source evidence to support points made.
