Colonel Crawford Varsity Football
By: Clint Erwin
This past football
season the Colonel Crawford
varsity football team won its
first playoff game in school
history. We defeated
Ayersville by a large margin.
We also won nine games and
only lost one game in the regular season. We have made it to
the Ohio High School
Football Playoffs three
times in school history.
The Eagles have had an
amazing regular season
record over the past 4
years as well; their record was 36 wins and only
4 losses. The Eagles are
losing a lot of talented
seniors next year but that is not going
to change the attitude that the Eagles
have or change their gameplay which
is at a very high level. The Eagles will
look to carry all of their success into
next season. Although there is a lot of
talent leaving there is just as much
talent coming in and stepping up at
the varsity level. A lot of people who
have doubted the Eagles say that
3-Time Olympian
By: Chad Johnson
Twenty-nine year
old Galen Rupp is one of
America’s finest distance runners in not only our country’s
history but the world’s as well.
The 2012 summer Olympic
silver medalist in 10,000m and
American record holder at the
distance (26:44) made his
marathon debut at the Olympic trials this past February
and won in a time of 2 hours
11 minutes and 12 seconds.
This not only got him a plane
ticket to Rio but also bragging
rights going into the Olympic
games as the top runner for
the United
States. The
reason he is
getting so
much attention in the
“running
world” is
because he
will be attempting to do what few runners have done and succeeded
in American history; Galen
Rupp will try and most likely
qualify in the 10k as well.
Qualifying for the
Olympics in the 10k after run-
they won’t be as good as they were last year and that they
will only win 6 games and lose 4 games. They are way too
determined and focused to let that happen. The Eagles will
continue to work hard, get better and have another great
and possibly historic season. The team has been working
hard to be a great team that can win games. The Eagles
will pretty much be playing the same teams we did last
year, and hopefully we can have a 10 win regular season
and go undefeated. Hopefully the Eagles will be able to
get back into the playoffs and win more than one playoff
game and add to the Colonel Crawford football history
books. It won’t be easy but with a lot of hard work and
dedication we will be able to accomplish anything we
want to.
ning a marathon shouldn’t be too big of a challenge for the former Oregon Duck, as he will have
until July to recover and get back into faster paced
training. The challenge will be the Olympics
themselves. He will double in the marathon and
10k with just an eight day recovery before having
to run a brutal 26.2 miles with the top runners in
the world. People have to wonder how he is going
to do it, but with an experienced coach on your
side, it almost seems as if anything is possible.
Alberto Salazar is one of the coaches at
the Oregon Project but has had an eye out for Galen ever since he was in
high school. Alberto Salazar was a world class runner in the late 70s and 80s;
he held American records in the 5k and 10k during his prime. Salazar is
mainly known for his coaching as he has plenty of talent that surrounds it.
He’s been working with Rupp for years and knows what kind of runner he is.
All in all, Galen Rupp will represent the United States with the best of his
ability whether that be with a medal or a last place finish. No matter what, he
will have established himself a great American distance runner.

Trapping
By: Jarrett Balliett
If you like the outdoors, then you
would love trapping. Trapping is a very old
sport; it is how the pioneers used to make
money selling the pelts of the animals they
catch. In Ohio you can trap coon, muskrat,
mink, coyote, fox, and beaver. These are the
main furs people go for. Trapping is done in
the winter months and there are many ways to
set a trap, like a dirt hole for coyote or a bottom edge set for mink and muskrat, or even
beaver. Trappers can also just set a trap in a

path.
My favorite thing to catch is a cherry red fox.
That is because of their gorgeous high dollar
pelt; you can get 60 dollars for a good one.
They are very smart and trap-leery, so you
can’t have any scent of you on the trap area. If
there is, then they will not check it out and
you won’t catch anything.
My second favorite thing to catch is probably
muskrat because they are easy and fun to
catch; also they are easy to skin and put up.
They pay well, like 5 dollars a pelt, so if you
catch ten, which is not that hard, you’ve got
Trapping takes a lot of responsibility; it’s not
like hunting where you can just choose what
day you go out. You have to check your traps
every day. Then you have to skin them out so
they don’t rot. Another downside is that the
prices go up and down a lot so it would not
make a good, secure job.
There are also different traps like a conibear,
leghold, dog proof, and colony trap. And
there are different sizes for different animals.
In most sets, except a blind set, you need
some kind of lure like urine, oils, and meats. It
all depends what animals you’re after.
Inside The CC Locker Room
By: Cameron Smith
With the Colonel Crawford varsity
basketball team, what many people don’t
understand is how close we are on and off the
court. In most programs players don’t play
like a team because they are not friends in
school. When asked about the friendships he
has, Brody Martin replied with, “We are pretty much a family.”
Many other teams just like to work with
their starting five and don’t let anyone
get the necessary work in the gym that
all players get at Colonel Crawford.
When asked about practices, Derek
Burkhart said, “It’s a great way to improve your game completely and have
an all-around team.”
Coach Sheldon is like a father to many of us in
which he teaches us hard-work and dedication. He shows us that you never want to take
an easy way out; whenever possible, you dig
it out. In two short seasons I have learned a
lot from that man and the other coaches in the
locker room. We also have two kids (our
managers) who come to every practice and
are just like little brothers to all of us. They
mess with us and we mess with them, and it
just comes to show that we are a literal family.
No matter what steps in front of us, we can get
around it as a team. In the locker room before
every game, most teams expect us to be a
super locked-in team due to all of our success
in the past, but really we have a lot of fun in
the locker room. We always listen to songs
and we even see some pretty cool dances out
of each other. All in all, we are one of the most
fun programs to be a part of with all the
winning and all the great attitudes each
player brings to the table.
We also have a lot of fun at practices with
all the drills we do because that is when we
can talk and just have a good time. We can
make fun of each other, but we still can be
ready to learn something new.
We are also taught to be responsible.
For the Love of Running
By: Savannah Pennington
Middle-distance running in track
includes events longer than sprints but shorter
than distance. Running this is a very draining,
tiring sport, both mentally and physically.
When going into this sport you need strength
and stamina. Mid-distance and distance track
is definitely a sport that you need to work
together like you’re a family to push each
other to go faster and further. Our middistance and distance track team makes every
practice fun but we still make sure we work
hard. During practice and meets, it is tough to
keep up with people who are faster than you.
Another thing you’re reaching for is to beat
your personal record. Even if you don’t get
first, it’s still a big accomplishment. Beating
your personal record shows the improvement that is going on during practices. During the races there are a lot of techniques
that go into running like your pace, breathing, and what your arms are doing. Every
event has a different strategy but the main
focus is saving some energy so you can
sprint to the finish. Meet days are normally
long, hot, and filled with a lot of people. When I
walk up to the line it can be the most nervewracking moment in my life until I hear the gun.
When running you’re focused on passing the person in front of you and not
letting a person behind
you pass. Running distance and mid-distance is
a mental sport. It relieves
stress and can really make
you happy. It’s a hard
sport but it really pays off
in the end.

A Visionary on Vision
By: Raye Hershey
Vision is always a fun time; sure we
always get yelled at for talking, but hey, we
are high schoolers. What do you expect?
Mrs. Eachus is our new teacher this year
and she is very much a perfectionist,
which is one of the best qualities a choir
teacher can have because it makes us
better. (She also likes to eat in front of
you right before lunch.)
I have had some of my friends dropped
by their partners in Vision, but I will not mention any names. Luckily I haven’t ever been
dropped in Vision, but the musical is a differ-

Crawford’s Swimming Eagles
By: Kenneth Fernandez
When we started back in October,
the guys’ team had gained three new freshmen and lost a sophomore and a senior. The
freshmen on the guys’ team are Zach, Andrew, Antonio, Keton, and Nic. These young
individuals were determined to swim fast and
kick some butt against a lot of teams and get a
lot of varsity points.
The team of the swimming Eagles was very
small compared to other schools like Lexington, which we had our first lost to, but it was
extremely close for the fighting Eagles. But
ent story. I have been dropped twice now this
year. The worst part of tricks and lifts for the
girls is jumping and hoping your partner can
catch you. I am sure the worst part for the
guys is hoping they can catch the girls also.
The best part about Vision for me is hanging
out with
friends
and the
memories
made
with it.
Going
around to the nursing homes was a lot of fun
too. We got to skip school and hang out all
day and dance and sing. We danced and sang
at about six nursing homes and we did all the
senior choir songs, which was about four, and
all the Vision songs, which was about three. In
total we sang about forty-two songs that day.
Sure our throats were a little sore and our feet
as well, and we crashed when we got home,
but all in all it was a good day and a good
deed. The winter concert was a lot of fun too.
Vision performed four songs from the 70s:
“Boogie Wonderland,” “Dancing Queen,” “A,
B, C,” and “Free Ride.” Vision is a lot of fun
because we all get along and we all work
hard when needed. We always get done what
needs to be done, and we laugh while doing
it.

Leo Club, 4-H, Jr. Fair Board, Camp counselor,
and last but not least, National Honor Society.
Taylor’s favorite subject in school would have
to be FFA. Some of her hobbies outside of
school are softball and basketball (she really
enjoys showing off her crossover fade-away).
Also in her free time, she enjoys being with
her cows and getting involved with the FFA
chapter. She has held an office in our FFA the
past two years, last year being the vice president and now this year being the president of
our chapter. Here are a couple words of advice that Taylor wanted to share: “Don’t take
young Cochran’s class for granted; it is fun. I
miss it.” and “You may not think it, but senior
year goes by really fast.” When Taylor was
asked if she hunts, she replied, “ No… but I
have shot a gun before so don’t come robbing
my house.” Though our FFA chapter I have
really gotten to know Taylor the past couple
years and look up to her. She is always busy
doing something, but somehow she stays
organized and still is always willing to help
anyone out.

What Does Project BLACK Stand For?
to mean “to move forward” as in we want to
help our veterans move forward in their lives.
By: Amanda Crase
Every year we do a talent show. This year it
should take place on April 9th, 2016. All you
have to do to be in the talent show is talk to
Ms. Halberg. You must talk to Ms. Halberg
before spring break in order to be in the
talent show. Then you
would have to show
up to a sound check
the week before the
talent show to make
sure everything runs
smoothly. If you do
enter the talent show
then you may win prize money for first, second, or third place.
Project BLACK is an organization
that is made up of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman and is run by Ms. Halberg. BLACK stands for “building leadership
and creating kindness.” Every year we do
some of the same things, but this year we are
trying something new.
This year we ran the Veteran’s Day
assembly. We collected the names of veterans
from the students and faculty and wrote them
on green light bulbs. The green light bulbs
stand for Greenlight A Vet which is a project
where you replace one light, inside or outside
of your house, with a green light. It is meant to
establish nationwide support for the veterans
of our country. Greenlight is also a term used
The Miraculous Life of Owen Adams
By: Ashton Hoepf
Owen Adams is an eighteen year
old senior at Colonel Crawford High School.
Most of you know Owen and 99.9% of the time
he is joking around with someone or being sarcastic with them.
He has accomplished so many
things throughout his high school
career.
Owen has a total of six siblings in
his family. Here are their names with ages
following: brothers Austin, 21; Nick, 19; sister
Addison, 11; step-brother Bryson, 15; stepsisters Brailyn, 7, and Brevyn 12.
A new thing that we are trying to do
this year is a mock crash. A mock crash is
meant to show kids what can happen if you do
Owen is involved in football, basketball, and
track. In football Owen is a receiver and safety. His achievements for football are: First
Team Defensive Back District, Defensive Back
of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year,
Honorable Mention All-Ohio, State All-Star
Game election, and County All-Star
Game election. For track, Owen participates in hurdles and long jump.
He has made All-Ohio, been a fouryear letter winner, and got on the
wall at Colonel Crawford High School
for the track team. Owen has been
one of the starting five on the basketball court since his junior year. This 2016
basketball season Owen started off as a shooting guard, but later in the season moved to
the point guard for the team. In addition to his
not pay attention when you are driving. We
may have the mock crash on May 7th, 2016. It
will most likely be down by the stadium and it
will be shown to grades 9-12. We have not
fully decided if we want the mock crash to be
geared more towards drinking and driving or
texting and driving. The mock crash has been
done at our school before, but it hasn’t been
done in a while which is why we are trying
to bring it back. We believe that it is a powerful way to show kids that when they drive
they need to be completely focused on
driving and not be impaired by anything.
Project BLACK stands for building leadership and creating kindness,
which means we want to help the community
and everyone in it. That is why we rake leaves
for people who need help doing it. We also
ring bells for the Salvation Army. We do all of
this because that is what we stand for.
other achievements, Owen also made First
Team District and the County All-Star Game
for basketball.
If you were to ask Owen what his favorite
sport is and why, he would say, “Football,
because it’s the only sport you can hit someone in without getting in trouble!” He has
been playing tackle football since the third
grade and has been starting for the Colonel
Crawford football team since he was a sophomore.
After graduating from Colonel Crawford,
Owen plans to attend Ohio Dominican University to play football. Ohio Dominican is a Division II school and has a very good football
program. He will be going into the business
major there at Ohio Dominican.
Deadpool: The Movie
By: Bently Corwin
I recently watched Deadpool: The
Movie and I would say that the movie deserves
∞ stars for many reasons. From beginning to
end you will be laughing so hard that your
stomach starts to hurt. Deadpool is a
“romantic” movie, but it’s also a comedy,
mixed with a horror movie and an action
movie all in one! In the movie there is a
British villain (just like in every action movie).
Deadpool is a really sarcastic, mouthy, and
psychotic character. He starts out as an exspecial ops mercenary, who ends up getting
terminal cancer in multiple spots. He then
goes to Project X (the same group that made
Wolverine). He then gets the ability to heal
any wound, and then goes after the British villain
who gave him the ability and stole his fiancé.
Throughout the entire movie, he (Deadpool) knows
that he’s in a movie and breaks the 4th wall. He
goes throughout the town of what many think is
Vancouver, Canada. If you go to watch this movie I
recommend not to take small children with you, for
it is not suitable for them. But if you and some of
your buddies decide to go see it, make sure to stay
till the very end. This means after the credits.

FFA Week
By: Christopher Poland
Each year, FFA chapters around the
country celebrate National FFA Week. The
week-long tradition began in 1947 when the
National FFA Board of Directors designated
the week of George Washington's birthday as
National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first
National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today,
FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday
and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington's
birthday.

A Great End to an Amazing Season
By: Dakota Quail
This winter swim season started out
with an amazing beginning and has now ended tremendously. The girls’ team had some
great swims and broken records at sectionals
which was located at Mansfield Malabar. Then
after that meet we had eight girl swimmers

Krassow, Chloe Grove, Kennedy Speck, and
Trissa Schimpf. In districts we had a couple of
people break records and also qualify to
state. Jillian Gregg, Chloe Grove, Madison

have qualified to swim at state which is locat-

We also did several different activities in
class; we had bale toss, corn hole and a new

due to a delay. This caused us to miss the allimportant and iconic “Bring your tractor to
school day.” But, we have rescheduled for
tractor day and I myself am going to polish up
the old fashion 450 Farmall and drive it. We
are more than ready for the 18th when we will

raise awareness for our organization and our
chapter. We laugh, compete and sabotage
each other, like in the case of what we did to

The Colonel Crawford FFA
of high school and the title fits her perfectly.
She is a mother-figure to all of us in the band.
Marching band isn’t the only thing she is a
part of; she is also in jazz, concert,
and pep band. The athletics she
was in at Colonel Crawford are
cross country and the swim team.
Bridget is also in a lot of community service organizations such as
Leo Club, which she is president
of, and was inducted into NHS her
junior year. She is a 12-year member of 4H and was a camp counselor for the program. Bridget was
in Vision show choir for a few years and the
school play; and lastly she went to Buckeye
Girls State over the summer. I asked her what
her favorite memory was of high school, and
she said that it was marching band as a whole.
Also, once in Mrs. Dzugan’s study hall her
sophomore year, Katrina Studer, Nicole Jones,
Anna Young, and Makalah Trubee were teasing her and keeping books away from her. So
she lightly pushed Makalah, which resulted in
Makalah swinging around and punching Bridget in the face which ended in Bridget bleeding. Although she enjoys all her classes equally, the ones that stick out the most are Psychology, Anatomy, and the “struggles” of
Chemistry. Bridget likes to shoot archery, to
be with friends, and play the ukulele in her
free time. She is inspired by God, her parents
and her friends. The advice she would give to
underclassmen and upcoming freshman is
“even though there are ups and downs in high
school, you only get to experience it once. So
enjoy it while you can.”
ed in Canton. We wish the state qualifiers
their best and to swim hard.
The girls’ team has made it far and has dominated many meets, but the girls wouldn’t have
gotten this far without the help of Coach
Holtzapfel and Coach Lyons. Their coaching
and support helped make the team what it is
this year along with our team captains. This
year has been amazing and filled with fun and
changes, such as the new invitational we
swam at Oak Harbor and The Rock Awards.
We’ve become like family in swimming; we
cheer each other on at meets and congratulate each other after a good swim. We also
help each other when we are struggling; in
swimming we always have a good laugh when
Coach Holtzapfel says something that sounds
like it wasn’t from this century. Practices can
be hard and taxing but always super fun when
Coach brings music. You can always hear the
voice of Megan Sharp singing along above the
noise and music, which will always create a
good laugh for everyone, including the
coaches.

Effects of Fracking on the Environment
By Drake DeLong
Fracking is the process of breaking
shale rocks with high pressure liquids, with
the goal of releasing natural gas from the
ground. The amount of water used is 1-8 million gallons, or approximately 400 tanker
trucks. All that water is mixed with chemicals
and sand. The amount of chemicals added is
about 40,000 gallons. Some of the chemicals/
elements used in this fracking fluid are lead,
uranium, mercury, radium, formaldehyde,
E-News Letters
hydrochloric acid, ethylene glycol, and methanol. The environmental dangers of fracking
is that the water chemical mixture leaks out
and contaminates nearby wells. Some ways to
tell if fracking has contaminated your water is
if you fill a glass with water and it forms a film
over the surface of the water after a while, and
in some extreme cases when people turn on
their faucets they can set their water on fire
mostly due to the methanol. Just think; if river,
stream, or lake water gets contaminated, that
would be bad for the wild life. If the wild life
gets contaminated with those sorts of toxic
chemicals and gets sick, that’s meat that we
can’t have for food. For example, if a deer
gets sick and forms some sort of disease or
ailment then the hunters will not be able to
use that meat. Then the whole kill of that deer
would have been a waste, and wasting 150
pounds of meat is a big deal! Or if the stream
leads to a farmer’s pasture, that would be bad
because that is also more meat and milk, and
maybe eggs that would be wasted. For plants,
the soil will filter out most of the harmful
chemicals making it so plants would be alright
till there is too much of a buildup of all those
chemicals. These are the reasons that fracking
should not be allowed even though it produces about 300,000 barrels of natural gas.

this world the Greek Gods have children
with mortals and create half-bloods. The

powerful their God-parent is. There are few
FFA Snow Trails Trip
By: Kaleb Haynes
Last month I went on a trip with my
FFA friends and went snow tubing at Snow
Trails. The trip was a lot of fun. We were even
early to something for once; in fact, we were
15 minutes early. Then while waiting for the
tubing to start Darren decided that it would be
a good idea to tell Mr. Schieber’s daughter to
throw a snow ball at Mr. Schieber. Then everybody started throwing snow balls at each other. Then after the tubing started, all the Ag
students formed a giant train to try to get to

Once Percy reaches the land of the
dead, or the Underworld, he manages to talk
to the main suspect of the theft. To say Lord
Hades was mad, was an understatement; he
was outraged. These children broke into his
land, and accused him of stealing the bolt.
Percy and his friends quickly make it out of
the Underworld and travel to Olympus to tell
the Gods who the real thief is. Once on Olympus they realize there is an even bigger evil
awakening.
I took a break to sit by the fire with a Mountain
Dew and I talked to Reagan. We both agreed that
we would start racing after we both ate a muffin.
Towards the end of the trip I found out that Reagan
thinks that flopping off the tube is an appropriate
use of air brakes and that going down face first
makes your face wind- whipped. On our last run
we decided to get everybody together and try to
get across the road and to another guy’s house.
We got to the road and then stopped and some
people hit the trees. On the bus ride home we all
listened to a lot of country music.

Simon believes Baz is a vampire). There

and neither does anyone else. Baz says he’s

Sarah Jeanette Wingert is currently
a senior at Colonel Crawford High School. Her
favorite colors are purple, yellow and blue.
She has an extensive panda collection. She is
a busy person! Her hobbies include flag
corp., the school musical, youth group, Vision, reading, writing and Mrs. Eachus’s Musical Theater class.
Sarah wants to attend Mount
Vernon Nazarene University where she will
to be a part of the state team in 2013 and
would hope to make it there one more time
before they graduate. To do that the Lady
Eagle softball team has been working extremely hard in practice and has really been
focusing on the season
ahead of them. The numbers are great this year:
the team almost has 30
players going out, and
they are expected to
have a great varsity team
along with a junior varsity team. With only losing one senior last year,
the team has a lot of returning players. The
team has one of the best pitchers in the
league; she leads with the most strikeouts for
the entire conference. Out of our four seniors,

of Magicks for his first year
he’s surprised everyone
already knows his name.
That’s when he met Penny.
It’s year eight now and
they’re still best friends. On
summer break Simon goes
into foster care. He’s an
orphan. He can’t contact
anyone from the World of
Mages while on break.
Except for that time that
Penny possessed an old
man.
It’s their last year at Watford and Baz hasn’t
study to become an English teacher and minor in Spanish. Five years from now she sees
herself graduated from college, possibly
married. She says, “I’ll go wherever God
shows me to go.”
Sarah’s favorite high school memories are going to New York City with Vision
last year and getting elected as homecoming
court with Brandon Long.
Sarah is a very kind person. You
can usually catch her with a bright smile on
her face. She is very patient and understanding. She isn’t afraid to talk to people. She is

freshmen and both played big positions on
the state team in 2013. The Lady Eagles have
some competition this year in Upper

they played them last year, so we hope to
beat them twice this year in return. With having one of the best coaches in the state,
coaching 28 years for the Lady Eagles, Coach

to be successful. The team has to perform and
play for each other and they will have a fantastic year. The Colonel Crawford softball
team has very big shoes to fill, and I hope to
see a great year ahead of them.
shown up yet. Simon reckons he’s off somewhere plotting. Simon also is wondering what
to do about his situation with Agatha. He saw
her near the Wavering Woods talking with
Baz and holding hands at the ending of last
year and never got to confront her about it
before he left the school. Simon’s mentor is
The Mage who is the headmaster of Watford.
He’s the one who first found Simon eight years
ago to tell him he was the Greatest Mage and
the World of Mage’s greatest hope. He’s
prophesied to save the World of Mage’s from
their greatest threat—the Insidious Humdrum.
The Humdrum is taking all the magic, it’s
sucking it out of the air—it’s eating it. Simon
isn’t sure what it’s doing. But it’s threatening
the homes of magicians and he’s the only one
who can stop it.

A Tale Of How Three Friends Came To Be
By: Pierce Krassow
Once upon a moonlight there was a little clownfish. His name was Sherminis. Sherminis lost his
family one day when he was a young little baby clownfish. Sherminis still to this day has no clue where
his family is. He was fine for a while, and he learned how to fend for himself but one night he got so alone
and was just done. So Sherminis was done with being a lone lonely loner. So he went looking, searching
for something…anything…He didn’t know what he was searching for, but he knew it was out there. Sherminis then traveled many a days and nights until he ran into a nice little wolverine named Jiff and a
young little bull frog, that had merely just changed from a tadpole, whose name was Donald Trump.
Sherminis could not put his finger on it but he knew that something special was going to happen with Jiff,
Donald Trump, and himself. Sherminis had a knack for feeling and figuring out these things. He calls
these extra senses his double f senses. So they started conversing and figured out that their families once
fought side by fin by webbed foot to make all their species free. Another thing they had in common was
that they all had lost their families. Also they figured out that they were all traveling to try to find it, even
though none of them knew what it was or what they were all looking for. They all decided to stay with
each other and look for it together. They traveled eastward bound into the village when they heard these
hideous shrieks come amongst them. The village burger mister came up to them and said, “Someone
has stolen the village’s ballerina. It’s our only entertainment!” Sherminis, Jiff, and Donald Trump knew
that this was their destiny. So the three found where the evil Vaxis had taken the ballerina. They used
their secret toddler age mutant power skills and saved the ballerina. The townsfolk repaid Sherminis,
Jiff, and Donald Trump by making them rich and famous, giving them a home forever. Jiff became the
world’s first pilot/astronaut wolverine and he was the best. Donald Trump became the world’s first bullfrog elephant tamer/rider. He was also the best at his job. Lastly, Sherminis became the most famous
clownfish in the world; his dream came true. Finally the best part is that Sherminis, Jiff, and Donald
Trump figured out what “it” was that they were looking for and what it was…each other. So in closing,
now Sherminis, Jiff, and Donald Trump are not ever going to be alone again or going to lose each other.
Now they all lived beautifully upon a moonlight.
Pole Vault 101
By: Sarah Campbell
Watching the sport of pole vault may make you hold your breath as they shoot upwards or wince as
they hit the mat, but behind the scenes there are many things that the athletes and the trainers do to prevent
injuries and accidents. The types of poles, the kind of pits, the bungee cords and bars, the standards, the box,
and the techniques coaches use to train their athletes are just some of the things that need to be made or done
correctly for people’s safety.
The competitive poles were once made of wood. These heavy, rigid poles were replaced with more flexible
bamboo poles in the 1950’s. The current fiberglass pole, which allows more bending of the pole to push you up
higher, was released in 1956. The laws of pole use are not strict; the pole can be any length but the athlete must
be within the weight requirements to keep the pole from snapping mid-air.
There are many pieces of equipment used for this sport and they all have a very important role. The mat that the
athletes fall back on is known as the pit. The bungee cords are not a necessity but many people like to practice
jumping over a stretchy, rubbery band rather than a hard competition bar. The standards are located at the
sides of the pit; they hold the bungees and the competition bar and can be moved up or down for the height, or
forward or backward for the jumper’s needs. The box is in front of the pit on the ground, which is where the pole
is planted for take off.
Coaches and trainers work hard on carving the correct technique of this sport into the athlete’s head. The steps
can be broken down into five easy motions. The approach is when the vaulter is sprinting down the runway
gaining speed for the take-off. The plant and take-off is when the vaulter’s pole enters the box and jumps with
the swing pulling the leg that left the ground first to his chest, while keeping the opposite leg straight. The
swing up is simply when the vaulter swings the straight leg forward towards the sky. The turn is executed when
you are at the top of the height bar, and you will turn 180 degrees. Then you have to push the pole away from the
height bar so it does not get knocked down. This is known as the fly-away.
Pole vault is commonly seen as a very difficult and dangerous sport, but when done correctly with the right
equipment and training, you can achieve great heights, and do it safely. The evolution of the poles and other
techniques have improved the sport and have made it enjoyable for people to watch and do.
Starry Night
By: Alyssa Payne
One starry night, there was a girl.
She loved to watch the stars.
Every night, she would go outside and sit in her usual spot,
right under her favorite oak tree,
and watch the stars for hours
upon hours. She was never lonely, watching the stars by herself.
The stars made her happy,
whether she was watching them
alone or not.
One night there were shooting
stars dancing across the sky. Like
usual, she was under her favorite
oak tree, watching them in awe.
Too busy looking at the stars she
didn’t notice that someone was
watching her. Someone who
never had the guts to tell her how he felt. But
this night, he knew he needed to tell her.
He walked up to her. “Hi.” She jumped up;
she didn’t know he was there. “Hi.” They
stood there for a minute, while he was trying
to figure out what to say.
“So… um, do you like
watching the stars?” he
asked. “Yeah,” she said,
“I always watch the stars.
Every night I come out
here, under this tree, and
just watch the stars.”
“That’s pretty cool,” he
said. “I wish I could watch
the stars every night, but I
don’t know a really good
spot to sit at.” She knew
what he wanted her to
say; he wanted to sit and
watch the stars with her.
“You can watch the stars
with me, if you would
like.” “I would love to watch the stars with
you.” “Then sit down. There are shooting stars
out tonight.” Then they sat and watched the
stars.
After watching the stars for a while, he finally
had enough courage to tell her. “I need to ask
you something.” “Yeah?” Her mind more focused on the stars. He could tell that she really
wasn’t paying attention. He waited a moment
before saying again, “I need to ask you something.” “I heard you the first time,” she started
to get annoyed. “What is it?” He started to get
nervous again. “Here goes nothing,” he
thought. “I’ve always… liked you. And I was
wondering,” he stopped, but she already knew.
“If I liked you too?” He was quiet for a moment.
“Yeah.” She didn’t have to think about her answer. “Yes, of course I do.” “You do?” “Yes.
I’ve… always liked you too. I just didn’t know
how to tell you.” “That’s funny, because I didn’t
know how to tell you!” “Well you just did.” She
smiled. He smiled back. “So what do we do
now?” He asked. “Let’s let time be our guide,”
she said, as they continued to watch the stars.
