MPS Insulator Testers Ensure Reliability Reliability is essential in any transmission system. With inter-connections between utilities, retirement of older coal generation facilities and the need to integrate renewable sources, scheduling a line outage to perform maintenance becomes increasingly difficult. MPS now offers an insulator tester that allows you to verify the electrical integrity of energized polymer and ceramic insulators. The Positron tester is a hot stick mounted device that measures the electric field (E-Field) along the insulator. The tester can identify conductive defects as small as 1.5" in length and enables the user to verify whether there are internal faults that would prevent an energized change out of an insulator while in service. This is an essential tool for all transmission maintenance crews. The Positron device was first introduced in 1990 and is used by many major utilities including (REESA – Spain, EDF– France, PowerGrid – India, Israel Electric and Korean Electric Power Company KEPCO, Manitoba Hydro, BC Hydro & Hydro Quebec – Canada, Terna – Italy and ONE – Morocco). US users include; BPA, PG&E, and Tri-State. The enhancements in the design have been in the user interface. The first generation models required that the units be connected to a computer to download the field readings. The latest designs include bluetooth interface, so data can be viewed from a distance immediately after taking measurements. Also available on composite model tester is a Go/ No Go feature. This provides the operator with a flashing light and audible alarm, if the tester encounters a defect. The defect threshold can be field adjusted to match the system requirements. The Go/No Go tester can be toggled to data mode to provide a graphical output for addition information on the size and location of a defect. Four models are available for either 50 Hz or 60 Hz operation to cover all your system needs. 1. Composite suspension tester with Go/No go feature 2. *Base model Composite suspension Tester with graph output 3. *Porcelain tester (can be used with 9" to 13" disk diameters) 4. *Universal design for larger diameter post insulators (Composite or porcelain) * Bluetooth communications adapter is optional on these models Benefits • Go/No go feature provides immediate information to the user on the insulator condition • Light weight design (2.4 lbs) allows for hot stick measurements even on 765kV systems • Tester enables much faster readings for Porcelain than traditional equipment • Internal memory can retain up to 300 strings of insulators or up to 15,000 readings • No direct electrical contact with the insulator • Single button user control Detects the Following • Leaking Insulators • Punctured housing • Carbon Tracking • Internal tracking • Moisture ingress • Severe surface contamination Ordering Information Description Catalog Number 60 Hz 50 Hz Composite Go / No Go Tester (Includes Bluetooth Adapter) 378209/2 378209/4 Composite Tester (Bluetooth Adapter Optional) 378206/2 378206/4 Porcelain Tester (Bluetooth Adapter Optional) 378130/2 378130/4 Universal Tester (Bluetooth Adapter Optional) 378265/2 378265/4 Optional Bluetooth Adapter 378325/2 —
