John Tod was born i n Hartford, Connecticut, i n 1779 and a t t e n d e d s c h o o l s
i n t h a t s t a t e and a l s o Yale College, He l e f t Connecticut w h i l e a young man and
waS b r i e f l y connected a s a n a s s i s t a n t master with C h a r l o t t e H a l l School a t
Aquasco, Maryland during 1801 and 1802. By t h e end of t h e l a t t e r y e a r h e was
e s t a b l i s h e d a t Bedford, Pennsylvania, where i n 1803 he was a d m i t t e d t o t h e
b a r and commenced p r a c t i c e .

1806 and 1807; member of t h e Pennsylvania House of R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s i n 18101&3, being twice speaker during t h a t i n t e r v a l ; member of t h e Pennsylvania
Senate i n 1814-1816, a c t i n g a s i t s p r e s i d e n t ; member, a s a Democrat, of
t h e United S t a t e s House of R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s i n t h e Seventeenth and E i g h t e e n t h
Congresses from 1821 t o 1824; p r e s i d e n t judge of t h e Court of Common P l e a s
f o r t h e S i x t e e n t h J u d i c i a l D i s t r i c t of Pennsylvania from 1824 t o 1827;
a s s o c i a t e judge of t h e Pennsylvania S t a t e Supreme Court from 1827 u n t i l h i s

Judge Todis c a r e e r a s a l e g i s l a t o r began while Lancaster was s t i l l t h e
C a p i t a l C i t y of Pennsylvania; i t took him t o t h e new C a p i t a l a t H a r r i s b u r g
i n 1812, and t o t h e n a t i o n a l C a p i t a l , Washington, D. C., i n 1821. H i s l a t e r
e x p e r i e n c e s i n t h e j u d i c i a r y and h i s p r o f e s s i o n a s a lawyer made him conv e r s a n t w i t h many p a r t s of Pennsylvania and with eminent contemporaries:
