Mrs. Chausse’s Chemistry Gifted Lesson Plan: Unit 4 Electrons September 28 – October 7, 2016 Wednesday, September 28, 2016 GLE/Standard: Physical Science 8 Objective: SWBAT accurately diagram electrons in the orbitals according to Schrodinger using Aufbau’s Principle, the Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund’s Rule at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, periodic table Lesson plan: Do now: Students will draw a Bohr model for two elements and describe what led to Schrodinger’s change in the model based on what they remember from the previous unit Students will take notes on the sublevels of an atom and identify the number of orbitals and electrons in each suborbital. Students will take notes on the Aufbau Principle, Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund’s Rule to understand electron configuration. Students will diagram various elements’ electron configurations using the three rules on the worksheet. Homework: finish the worksheet Thursday, September 29, 2016 GLE/Standard: Physical Science 8 Objective: SWBAT write the unabbreviated and abbreviated electron configurations for various elements using Aufbau’s Principle, the Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund’s Rule at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, worksheet from previous day, periodic table Lesson plan: Do now: Students will draw the electron diagrams for two elements Students will review the work from the previous day Students will take notes on how to read the periodic table using Aufbau’s Principle and diagram their copy accordingly Students will take notes on how to write the unabbreviated and abbreviated electron configurations using the three rules Students will write the unabbreviated and abbreviated electron configurations for the elements from the previous day’s diagrams as practice Homework: finish worksheet Friday, September 30, 2016 –NO SCHOOL –PARISH FAIR HOLIDAY! GLE/Standard: Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now Objective: SWBAT Homework: Monday, October 3, 2016 GLE/Standard: Physical Science 8 and 9 Objective: SWBAT calculate the wavelength and frequency of waves at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now: Students will write the short and long hand electron configuration for two elements Students will review the previous day’s work Students will review the Quantum Mechanical Model and how electrons orbit in waves Students will watch a short music parody on the EM Spectrum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_PVz8HrrCI Students will discuss the types of waves that the spectrum consists of and where they have heard of them before Students will take notes on wavelength, frequency, and the speed of light; three variables in the equation c = λ * f Students will calculate the wavelength or frequency of different waves based on their variables Homework: finish worksheet; study for quiz tomorrow on electron configurations Tuesday, October 4, 2016 GLE/Standard: Physical Science 8 and 9 Objective: SWBAT calculate the energy, wavelength, and frequency of photons in a given problem at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now: Students will get ready for quiz Students will take a quiz on electron configurations Students will review the previous day’s work Students will discuss how the colors of the rainbow range according to their wavelengths and if they could calculate the frequency based on just by the color. Students will take notes on Plank’s equation Students will calculate the amount of energy required to release a photon given either the wavelength or frequency on a worksheet Homework: finish worksheet Wednesday, October 5, 2016 GLE/Standard: Physical Science 8 and 9 Objective: SWBAT explain how electrons can jump energy levels and break the Aufbau Principle at 85% accuracy. Materials: Elmo, Lesson plan: Do now: Students will calculate the frequency or wavelength in a problem using the formula c = λ * f Students will review the previous day’s work Students will take notes on ground state and excited state and breaking Aufbau’s Principle when tying in Plank’s equation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWyAqQB9pvc Students will review the lab report and answer the pre-lab questions Students will review the material for the test on Friday Homework: start studying for the test; Projects due TOMORROW!!! Thursday, October 6, 2016 GLE/Standard: Physical Science 8 and 9 Objective: SWBAT estimate the amount of energy it takes to excite electrons in various metals using the flame test at 85% accuracy. SWBAT identify an unknown metal based on the color of the flame at 85% accuracy. Materials: solutions, sticks, Bunsen burners, matches, aprons, goggles, lab reports, calculators, pencils, fire extinguisher (in case of emergency) Lesson plan: Do now: Students will don lab safety gear and review the lab procedure again Students will conduct the labs according to the lab manual and collect their data Students will calculate the wavelength, frequency, and energy for each light seen Students will answer analysis questions Homework: study for test tomorrow Friday, October 7, 2016 GLE/Standard: Materials: test, periodic table, pencil Lesson plan: Do now: n/a Students will take test Homework: Objective: SWBAT take an assessment on the unit at 85% accuracy.
